Jeff Kiel President and Publisher FLORIDA TODAY Communications 2013 United Way Campaign Chair
“It hasn’t taken me long to see how valuable United Way is to our community. I’ve had the opportunity to serve low-income seniors a meal at Seniors at Lunch. I got to see where women and children seek refuge after escaping an abusive situation and where individuals with disabilities go to find a community of support. United Way and their partners provide services in a way that preserves dignity and respect for those they assist. This is my motivation to pledge this year, and I hope you’ll join me in working even harder to help those in need.”
EDUCATION, INCOME AND HEALTH For 56 years, your United Way has been working hard in our community to ensure we have a safety net of services available when people need help. But it isn’t enough. We aspire to drive even greater community change. That’s why United Way’s work is focused on the building blocks for a good life – Education, Income and Health.
Education Students who lag behind in reading are more likely than their peers to drop out of high school, to be unemployed or underemployed and to end up on welfare or in prison. To boost student achievement, United Way focuses on the strategies that local education experts say are the keys to long-term student success: • Closing the 3rd Grade Reading Achievement Gap • Summer Reading Loss Prevention - 10,000 VPK and kindergarten students • Family Literacy
3rd Grade FCAT Reading Scores (Passing %>=3) Total Students White, Non-Hispanic Black or African American, Non-Hispanic Hispanic/Latino Free or Reduced Lunch

HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED o Select, encourage and support a highly motivated Employee Campaign Manager o Be actively engaged in your workplace efforts (approve the campaign plan, request progress reports, participate in key campaign activities)
o Lead the way with a generous personal gift o Include campaign best practices in your plan - run a separate management campaign - top performing companies run them - use incentives - prizes and challenges work - invite agency speakers or take tours - this allows employees to see their dollars at work - most importantly, make a ‘quality ask’ of all employees - meetings increase participation
o Consider a corporate gift increase
