Many organizations focus on one cause, but United Way of Brevard looks at the community as a whole. Our goal is to find solutions to the challenges faced by many in Brevard. United Way’s strength is convening partners and experts to encourage a unified approach to complex community issues and then creating solutions for the gaps in service. Your investment inspires us to go beyond ‘what is’ and strive for what our community can and should be. Our goal is to create long-lasting change by addressing the underlying causes of problems. That’s why our work focuses on the building blocks of a good life – Education, Income and Health. Together, through United Way, the contributions of thousands of individual donors become a force for change in the community. United Way Endowment Every day, United Way donors create opportunities and inspire hope for a better tomorrow. There is a way to continue your impact forever. As a member of the Legacy Society or the Tocqueville Legacy Circle, you can make a legacy gift to United Way of Brevard’s Endowment Fund. There are many different ways to leave a legacy. The most common are outright gifts, such as cash or a check, which United Way receives right away. Some planned gifts are revocable, so you can change your plans if your situation changes. Others are irrevocable and offer immediate tax benefits. In any case, planned gifts provide important benefits to the giver as well as United Way. Just think of what you want your philanthropy to accomplish, and there’s probably a way to do it! Tocqueville Society

The Tocqueville Society is designed to involve and deepen the understanding, commitment, and support of United Way’s most generous and community-minded investors. The name was chosen because of Alexis de Tocqueville’s admiration for the spirit of voluntary association and effort for the common good, a spirit he had observed in America and about which he wrote enthusiastically. Only 26 years old when he came to America in 1831, Alexis Charles-Henri Clerel de Tocqueville traveled all over the young nation. Though he only spent nine months in the United States, he gleaned an insightful view of American Society.

I must say that I have seen Americans make great and real sacrifices to the public welfare; and I have noticed a hundred instances in which they hardly ever failed to lend faithful support to one another.

His observations, readings, and discussions with eminent Americans formed the basis of ‘Democracy in America,’ a detailed study of American society and politics published in two volumes in 1835 and 1840. Perhaps his most important observation was that Americans helped each other in times of need. He recognized, applauded and immortalized the voluntary spirit that lives in America’s heart.

2013-2015 TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY CO-CHAIRS As co-chairs, the Hoymans have set the strategic direction for our Tocqueville Society and strengthened the personal network of relationships among our Tocqueville members during their term. Chas is the managing partner for Carr, Riggs and Ingram, and Vonnie is a former elementary teacher. Both Chas and Vonnie are actively involved with several organizations within our community.

Vonnie Hoyman invited the Tocqueville women to A Perfect Blend – A Tocqueville Women’s Coffee to hear about United Way’s new strategic early grade reading initiative.

A Tocqueville Soirée was hosted by Chas and Vonnie at their beautiful Suntree home last November. It was an opportunity to celebrate our Society members and their transformative capacity.

Both are very passionate about our new strategic initiatives, especially early grade reading. Thank you for all you’ve done during your time as co-chairs!

Tocqueville Society Three elements of democracy which Tocqueville so admired in American society were liberty, equality, and the spirit of neighbor helping neighbor.
