United Way Summer Reading Awareness

TAG . . .

You’re it!

The end of the school year is almost here. With the help of dedicated teachers, your child has learned many new skills. However, research shows that children lose one to three months of reading achievement gained during the school year over the summer months. This is often referred to as the summer slide. That’s why we are asking you to “Tag In” this summer. As your child’s first and most valuable teacher, you can help to prevent the “summer slide” by continuing simple reading activities over the summer. We’re handing it off to you this summer, and we hope this booklet/calendar will help you!

A summer reading initiative brought to you by:

" Summer Reading Challenge Here’s how it works: •

Read, read, read!

When your child finishes a book, have him/her write down the title on this form.

Have your child return this form to his/her teacher on the first day of school.

Every child who returns this form will receive a specially selected reward chosen by his/her new teacher. (Some of the fun rewards include: Recognition on your school’s marque, lunch with the principal, homework pass, name on your school’s reading hall of fame, sit in the teacher’s chair for the day or treasure box - your new teacher next fall picks the reward!)

Ready, Set, Read!: For Grades K-2 Students read at least 10 books For Grades 3-6 Students read at least 8 items to include chapter books and/or informational books, articles or magazines.

TIPS AND RESOURCES Every Question Counts!

Brevard Public Schools

Part of continual literacy progress is learning how to think as you read. Asking questions supports learning how to think. Examples of some questions you might ask your child before, during, or after they read might be:

Brevard Public Schools provides recommendations for engaging students in summer reading. Visit www.brevardschools.org. (See Summer Reading under the Parents and Students tab.)

What was it all about? What do you think will happen next? What was your favorite part of the story? What did you learn? How did the characters change over time? What was the problem in the story? What was the solution?

Resources for Summer Reading Feed and Read Sites United Way’s Feed and Read sites this summer will offer kids a place to gather in neighborhood centers to read and receive a book of their own. Food packages will also be available. For site locations and times visit www.uwbrevard.org.
