2010 United Way of Cass-Clay Board of Trustees

I have been both energized and humbled by the opportunity to serve as the Chair of the United Way of Cass-Clay Board of Trustees during 2010. Even though we began to see signs of economic recovery during the past year, there were many individuals and organizations who continued to feel the impact of the economic downturn. Whether impacted or not, this did not deter the businesses and individuals residing in Cass and Clay counties from once again stepping up to drive the achievement of our 2010 record setting goal and provide the funding necessary to support agencies, programs and initiatives within our communities that assist others through difficult times. It is definitely humbling to live in such a giving and caring community where people truly understand what it means to LIVE UNITED. Jeffrey S. NORTH DAKOTA EARLY CHILDHOOD RATING & IMPROVEMENT SYSTEM (NDECRIS) The North Dakota Early Childhood Rating & Improvement System is a pilot project with two main goals: recognize and improve the quality of early care and education settings to support children’s optimal development and learning, and provide parents with an easy to use tool to assist them in selecting quality early care and education programs for their children. In 2010, United Way of Cass-Clay invested $80,000 in the North Dakota Early Childhood Rating and Improvement System Pilot Project. This is part of a 4 year investment totaling $225,000.

“We have focused on preparing our child for kindergarten with activities suggested by this program.” “He has so much confidence now. He is excited to start ‘real’ kindergarten in the fall.” “My child has been exposed to the classroom environment and knows what to expect when school starts. He has learned how to play and interact with other kids and teachers. He is definitely ready to start kindergarten now!” -Parent participants of 2010 Gearing Up for Kindergarten

“Finding child care for our son was a challenging process. A tool such as the Early Childhood Quality Rating and Improvement System will make searching for child care so much easier for families. As a parent, I experienced uneasiness, worry and guilt about leaving our baby. This tool offers parents reassurance that their children are in a safe, caring and educational environment!” -Nikki, Parent in Fargo

GEARING UP FOR KINDERGARTEN Gearing Up For Kindergarten is a school-readiness and parent education program coordinated through NDSU Extension Services. It includes weekly sessions for parents and children to attend together to acquire skills to prepare them for a successful transition into kindergarten. The program is free to families because of United Way of Cass-Clay donor dollars. Children experience parentchild interaction and parents also attend sessions on brain development and parenting styles. In 2010, United Way of Cass-Clay invested $25,000 into Gearing Up for Kindergarten.

IMAGINATION LIBRARY Each month in 2010, over 8,000 children in Cass & Clay counties received free books through Imagination Library, a partnership between United Way of Cass-Clay and the Dollywood Foundation. Any child from birth to age five is eligible to receive a book which is mailed to his or her home each month. The program is free to families because of donor dollars. Your gifts in 2010 allowed United Way of Cass-Clay to invest in children. The Success By 6® initiative invests in early childhood development and education programs that ensure children have the positive and enriching experiences to succeed in school and in life.

PRESCHOOL ON WHEELS Preschool on Wheels is a portable preschool for children in home-based childcare ages three to six coordinated by Moorhead Early Childhood Family Education. Because of funding from United Way of Cass-Clay, home-based providers can utilize this convenient service in which a certified teacher travels weekly to their home and provides curriculum and materials focused on early childhood education including number and letter recognition tools, books, art supplies, and large motor equipment. The program strengthens families, supports childcare providers in their dual roles of care provider and educator of young children, and prepares children for school success. In 2010, United Way of Cass-Clay invested $5,000 in Preschool on Wheels.

2010 Women’s Leadership Council

United Way of Cass-Clay

Women’s Leadership Council

Created in 2001, the mission of the United Way of Cass-Clay Women’s Leadership Council is to create a powerful network of women who strengthen our community through an investment of leadership, fundraising and community service. Women who give an annual gift of $600 or more or a combined annual gift of $1,200 with a spouse or partner are considered members of Women’s Leadership. In 2010 over 870 women in our community gave at the $600 or more level.

Over 600 women attended the 10th Annual Women’s Leadership Luncheon and were uplifted by the remarkable story of Beth Holloway, mother of Natalee Holloway, a young woman who disappeared in 2005. All proceeds from Women’s Leadership Council Events are invested into United Way of Cass-Clay’s early childhood education initiative, Success By 6®. The 2010 WLC Luncheon raised nearly $20,000 to support Success By 6®. In addition to the annual luncheon, the Women’s Leadership Council coordinates other events and efforts for local women to volunteer, network, learn, advocate, and be recognized as philanthropic leaders.

2010 35 Under 35 Women’s Leadership Program The 35 Under 35 Women’s Leadership Program: • mobilizes the caring power of women • energizes and inspires women to make a difference • deepens leadership opportunities in the Cass-Clay community for young women

“This program is among the best in developing leaders in our community! It offered me a variety of experiences to develop personally and professionally. It prepares you for your next and current roles in our community.” -Jill Staffne, State Bank & Trust 2009 35 Under 35 Graduate & 2010 Volunteer

In 2010, the 2nd Annual 35 Under 35 Women’s Leadership Program was coordinated under the direction of the Women’s Leadership Council in collaboration with Junior League of Fargo-Moorhead, Women’s Business Exchange, Women’s Fund, and YWCA Cass Clay.

My LIVE UNITED Story My name is ANtHONY.

Susan: When we moved to Fargo I wanted to find something for my son—a place for him to go, but I knew it would be tough since I am a single mother. Because of United Way, we were able to join the YMCA of Cass and Clay Counties and have both loved it ever since—Anthony has more self confidence and has even won some skateboarding contests at Island Park in Fargo! The scholarship lowers the price for our membership so Anthony is able to connect with good people and find good friends. It keeps him off of the streets. It makes me feel really good to know that Anthony is safe. It’s nice to know that United Way is there to help. Anthony: My favorite part about the YMCA is the staff-they are cool and they help me with my homework—mostly with math. They also teach me skateboarding tricks and we get to do the wall climb, play ping pong and pool. If I couldn’t go to the YMCA, I’d probably just play video games. When I turn 16, I’d really like to work at the YMCA and teach kids like me how to skate.

My LIVE UNITED Story My name is DENNIS.

I was in pretty good health up until I was about 37 when I was diagnosed with diabetes. It’s been really tough. I use 7 bottles of insulin every month—that’s about $500. Before finding the Prescription Assistance Program, my insulin was taking almost my whole paycheck every month, but I have to have the insulin. I can’t live without it. Every day is a struggle with groceries, getting food on the table, putting gas in the car so we can get to work. My wife and I push ourselves aside to make sure the girls get what they need and are able to be on the West Fargo Flyers Swim Team.

18

Because the Prescription Assistance Program has funding from United Way of Cass-Clay, they can help even more people like me.
