LIVE UNITED
INTEGRITY In our relationship with our stakeholders, donors, agencies, individuals, and the community we hold ourselves to the highest ethical and moral standards. VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP Volunteers establish the policies for the organization and set the vision for the future. HELP THOSE IN NEED LOCALLY We focus the communities’ resources on helping local residents improve their lives. STEWARDSHIP We are committed to ensuring that resources placed into our care will be managed in the most effective way.
We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give. -Sir Winston Churchill United Way of Cass-Clay is an extraordinary catalyst for change throughout our region. It is an organization that has always served our community through volunteer leadership. Vision, oversight and operational execution are developed and provided by volunteers and it has been my great privilege to serve as the Chair of the United Way of Cass-Clay Board of Trustees this year. Our volunteer board has accomplished much over the last twelve months. Most importantly, we had great success in building the United Way team and strategy. We have only seen the beginning of the very positive impact that our United Way team is capable of having in our community. Your investments of time and dollars to United Way fuel a very efficient, effective and proven engine for improvement in our community. Your hard-earned investments are leveraged greatly by the expertise, leadership and strategies executed by United Way. I am confident that this organization is very well positioned to serve our community well into the future and I invite you to join us in our mission to improve lives.
Dean Atchison Spectrum Aeromed 2011 Board of Trustees Chair
For the past year, I have had the honor of serving our local Cass-Clay community and working to unite people, ideas and resources to advance the common good. With hundreds of community, corporate and philanthropic partners and volunteers, I have asked you to GIVE, ADVOCATE and VOLUNTEER and I could not be more appreciative of your support. By investing in a network of Community Partners comprised of more than 41 non profits and 65 local programs and strategic education-focused initiatives such as Success By 6, United Way of Cass-Clay is uniquely positioned to bring people together to address and research local community needs and then invest in solutions. The measure of United Way of Cass-Clay is not in the fundraising campaign but in the ways we are impacting the thousands of men, women and children that live and work among us. It takes an entire community to make a difference and I thank you for your involvement with our United Way to ensure the communities of Cass and Clay counties continue to be a great place to live, grow and succeed.

2011 CAMPAIGN CHAIR: RANDY JOHNSON Celebrating the $5 million goal achievement is something for which our community should be proud. Not because it is a goal met, or a milestone achieved, but because it represents the collective effort of our community coming together to accomplish something really significant. Our theme this year was NEVER FLY SOLO. It represented that it takes a team to accomplish a goal in any walk of life. Through the symbolism of the campaign, we were all encouraged to be “wingmen” for our community; to band together and accomplish what could not be accomplished alone. Through this effort, we will improve the condition of the men, women, and children who are touched by the work of United Way of Cass-Clay. I want to thank every donor that contributed to the success of this campaign. Every gift is important and helped us surpass our goal of $5 million. Randy Johnson, 2011 Campaign Chair

I always knew that the United Way of Cass-Class made a huge impact in our community, however I did not realize the level of impact until I started volunteering for the Community Investment Review Panel. By volunteering, I have become better educated on the needs that exist in our community, and as a result, make this a personal priority each year. As I learn more about each of the non-profit agencies and programs, I have developed a greater desire to volunteer my time and services throughout the community.
COMMUNITY INVESTMENT REVIEW PANEL VOLUNTEERS • United Way of Cass-Clay investment decisions are volunteer-led. • Volunteers review applications of programs requesting funding from United way, participate in site visits and make funding recommendations. • Community Investment volunteers ensure dollars entrusted to United way are leveraged to their maximum capacity by evaluating the programs’ impact on the community, financial stability and client outcomes.
Participating in the Community Investment Review Panel process has been an invaluable experience! It has allowed me to learn about programs and really see the impact agencies are having within our community. The money raised by United Way is making such a difference, and it inspires me to continue to contribute both financially and through volunteering. day Braun, Microsoft 2011 community investment review panel Volunteer

as a parent, you always want to provide your child with all they need, but as a single parent, the reality is difficult. programs like the school supply drive and others from United way give parents the opportunity to provide certain things for their children that they wouldn’t have been able to on their own. each spring United way partners with prairie public Broadcasting and fargo park district to co-host share a story. this annual event promotes literacy and encourages caregivers to take an active part in their children’s literacy. children and families took home a free book, met cat in the Hat, and enjoyed story-telling, and activities centered around literacy.

I never gave a thought to my age when I adopted the kids... I’m just praying for 6 more years so I can get these kids through school. Before, I had no idea what counseling was like—it’s totally different than my past conceptions. Counseling allows me to come and talk to someone about my problems. I have nobody else. For me, it’s been a success. Agnes, Grandmother, legal guardian, and counseling client

Receiving a home is not a hand out, it is a hand up... It helps people like us who hit bumps in the road, get into a home, and get back on track. Before, it was hard to get my kids out to play safely. I wanted a home for my kids so I could fence a yard and let them be kids. Jennelle Bichler, recipient of a 2011 home
