2013 Annual Report - United Way of Greater St. Louis

Page 1

2013 accomplishments Board chair and president A letter from the board chair I am often reminded that one of the greatest assets of our region is our United Way. As chair of the board, it has been my job to ensure that United Way of Greater St. Louis not only keeps its strong position in our community, but also develops a vision in concert with the needs and dynamics of our region. That’s why when Gary Dollar retired this year after 12 years as president and C.E.O., the board hired Orvin Kimbrough to take the helm. We are incredibly grateful to Gary Dollar and his tremendous impact on our community. To honor him, United Way’s executive committee named the United Way downtown headquarters the Gary C. Dollar building, which was made possible through the generous support of individual and corporate donors who contributed $2.1 million to pay off United Way’s mortgage.

This will commemorate Gary’s legacy and help position United Way to help more local people in the future. Looking back over 2013, I am pleased with our many achievements, including a record-breaking $72,254,028 fundraising campaign, and I’m grateful for a caring and generous community that is willing to help so many through United Way. This year was about transition; we have a lot to look forward to in the future. James D. Weddle United Way Board Chair 2011-2013 Managing Partner Edward Jones

A letter from the president It is a true honor to serve as president and C.E.O. of United Way of Greater St. Louis. This is not a position to take lightly – hundreds of thousands of local individuals and families rely on United Way each year. We exist to create the conditions so that all people in our region can live their best lives. In 2013, we built on a long legacy of helping people: • Raised $72,254,028 through our annual campaign • Admitted three new agencies — College Bound, Redevelopment Opportunities for Women and St. Clair County Child Advocacy Center • Brought Imagination Library to more than 1,400 children in United Way supported early childhood learning centers • Created a Men’s Leadership Society as part of our affinity group strategy, which also includes societies for women and African Americans, as well as multicultural and young individuals • Played a key role in tornado response efforts throughout our region

A common table United Way is a common table for our region. In an era of decreased resources and increased needs, our region must rethink how we approach issues. History tells us going it alone is less optimal than shared ownership, shared vision and collective action. United Way has partnered with other local funders to begin the journey of formalizing a cradle-to-career approach to help our youth achieve better outcomes. I am looking forward to working with all of our partner agencies, other key health, religious, academic, and economic development institutions in the region and you, our nearly 200,000 individual and institutional investors, on changing the discussion on how we help people live their best possible lives in the days, weeks, months and years ahead.
