Isaiah 43:19
Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
2020 has been a challenging year of significant change for many, including the way in which the church has exercised its mission and ministry. While 2021 may be more so, we are full of anticipation and hope for the year ahead.
We assure you of the Synod’s on-going support for presbyteries, congregations and other ministries as we work together, and give thanks for the way in which many people have gone ‘above and beyond’ this year. 2021 will see us implementing some new strategic priorities with a strong focus on growing the work of God in and through the Uniting Church here in South Australia. We continue to welcome conversations seeking understanding and compassion as we increase our connection with God, the church and our local communities.
\
Moderator / General Secretary We are ‘a pilgrim people’, always on the way towards a promised goal’ (Basis of Union, para. 3) and we look to the future with a renewed sense of purpose as we celebrate the coming of Christ into the world.
May you know God’s blessings as you make your plans for 2021.

Thank you for supporting the Uniting Church The Mission and Service Fund is a great example of our financial commitment to mission and service – together.
Budgeted income
This page explains our proposed budget for 2021 for this Fund – it is far more than a set of figures because it expresses how we finance our mission in South Australia and beyond. This budget, along with the following pages demonstrates how the Uniting Church seeks to live out this intention through mission and in community.
Congregations contribute 10% of their income to this Fund (60% remains with the Synod and 40% is distributed to the presbyteries), so this is where you have a direct impact on how much mission together we can undertake - thank you
Note: This budget information is subject to approval of the Synod Standing Committee at its meeting on 25 November 2020.

Resources Team In 2020, the Resources Ministry Centre continued to support the Church by providing services often through new and different ways. As we moved away from the office in March and learned to work from home, we trusted one another and stayed connected with congregations, presbyteries and the wider church as we strived to assist and respond, despite our geographical distance. During the year we saw changes in the church’s responsiveness and adaptability. Whilst the global pandemic seemed to take over our media and our conversations, the church remained focussed on God’s call to us. Collectively we found new ways to do things, and new ways to ‘do mission.’ The Resources Ministry Centre appreciates the need for clear communication as it provides support, advice and assistance to congregations as they fulfil their mission to serve God. This
takes many shapes and forms, and through collaboration and cooperation, great things have been achieved. Our new Strategic Plan will provide a clear mission statement for the Synod as our attention has been drawn to the future – who the church will be and what our part in that will be. We are here to respond to the needs and requirements of the wider church, and as its legal entity, provide oversight of the church’s legal and regulatory responsibilities. We appreciate all the volunteers who serve on our Boards and Committees with a spirit of generosity and a love for Christ. Generate Presbytery It takes courage to continue to hope in the midst of a crisis and it takes courage to lead through uncertain and difficult times. It takes courage to find new ways of doing ministry and mission. It takes courage to ask tough questions of our own discipleship and it takes courage to allow some things to die so there is energy and room for new things to grow.
Despite the difficulties faced in 2020 there has certainly been much to celebrate. In true Generate fashion congregations across the presbytery chose to embrace their mission in the midst of these changes. It was encouraging to see leaders sharing ideas, skills and resources. We saw so many congregations move to online services and church ‘at home’ packs. Many others tuned in and experience of worship with an online congregation. Although we may not know all the circumstances that 2021 will bring, we can see the heart with which Generate churches and leaders will approach it. A hunger for more of God. A passionate pursuit of the mission event when circumstances change.
A generous heart to share and encourage each other as one Presbytery. The courage to see people come to faith, grow as disciples, leaders raised up, and churches planted and renewed. We are in this together.

Congress SA
In keeping with the Isaiah 43:19 verse, if anyone knows how to ‘make a way in the wilderness’ it is Congress SA’s Frontier Services Bush Chaplain, Pastor Julia Lennon. Julia is based at Oodnadatta in the State’s far north, over 700 kilometres from Port Augusta.
Raukkan Faith Community oversee our Murraylands ministry including the use of the Tailem Bend church. Thanks to the support of Uniting Foundation, Raukkan Faith Community was blessed to be able to employ a part-time youth worker, Shawnee Weetra who commenced in December 2019.
Congress has also been supported by the employment of Chelsea Size as Training and Formation Coordinator. We are excited that Chelsea has been able to help some Congress leaders begin their studies at Uniting College.
Adelaide Congress has been pleased to be able to employ their first Anangu pastoral worker this year. Pastor Melissa Thompson is able to speak the language, and so is a great blessing for the Anangu congregation based at Salisbury, under the leadership of Rev Dean Whittaker.
Port Augusta led the way with Congress worship in SA by Zoom in the early months of COVID. They also led worship for Some new things we are looking forward to in 2021, include a new part-time Finance and Administration Officer in the an Assembly Facebook service, in which the Interim Congress office at Yarthu Apinthi (Uniting College); National Congress Chair Rev Mark Kickett preached development and approval of plans for the new and Dusty Feet Mob danced. Congress church at Oodnadatta; and new opportunities for the training of our youth and young adults.

Uniting College 2020 has been a year of reflection, learning and adapting to new challenges at the Uniting College for Leadership and Theology. We have been challenged to fully utilise our online study experience and discovered new and improved ways of connecting with students to deliver high quality education and training. We have developed new courses and revised some existing ones to better serve the life and mission of the church. Feedback from the new short-form Higher Education Certificates (Christian Leadership/Ministry Studies) has been excellent and we have plans to further tailor these courses for specific ministry contexts.
We have advanced our partnership with Tabor College in offering a 2021 Graduate Diploma in Spiritual Direction. After all, if the intention is to minister out of our own relationships with God, it makes sense to give deliberate, structured attention to that relationship with the help of a spiritual director. Our first cohorts for the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma in professional supervision have begun for March 2021. This is an important step to ensure that all ministry agents have qualified, skilled supervisors to support and resource healthy and effective ministry practice. We remain eager and committed to making theological education accessible, adaptable and achievable for all people
regardless of age, location or other factors. We continue to grow our partnerships with learning facilities across Australia including Newlife College (Qld), the WA Synod, Pilgrim College (Vic), and with our ecumenical partners Australian Lutheran College, Tabor College and others. Presbytery of Southern SA Whether in congregations big and small, rural and city, in buildings old and new, at home or in residential care – it’s all about the people and our pastoral care of each other, our mission and witness in our local community. The Presbytery is a bit like an empty trellis! A framework waiting for life to become manifest as the plant continues to grow and flourish up into it. Recognising that we are people of diverse cultures, urban and rural, with a significant Congress community, we also include a vast range of likes and opinions across every human interest imaginable. It may be Walking on Country at Raukkan, or gathering around a table at morning tea; sometimes it is young people leading worship, or a vibrant Kid’s Club run by a small congregation; and for others, it is the simple act of gathering for worship. Within the Presbytery of Southern SA, congregations are encouraged to strengthen and support one another so that they can fulfil their role of worship, witness and service.

Uniting Venues SA
The typical Australian catchcry ‘We are one, but we are many,’ is taken seriously in Uniting Church circles. Neither geography, landscape nor demographic could deter five very different Uniting Church SA camp, conference and retreat centres from operating under the one umbrella brand: Uniting Venues SA. Stretching from Tarooki on the Limestone Coast, through Adare at Victor Harbor, to Nunyara in the Adelaide Hills, across the wheat-belt with Emmaus and finally to Thuruna on the Eyre Peninsula, Uniting Venues SA covers a lot of territory, but also shares a lot of common ground. Although each of the sites have been operating for over fifty years, the five sites officially came under the banner of Uniting Venues SA in February 2011. Since inception, Uniting Venues SA has come a long way in ten short years. During this period we have seen the establishment of Beyond Limits Outdoor Education – a Christian Outdoor Education Service who service many of our 27,000 guests
each year. All of the campsites and Beyond Limits share the same goal: to provide opportunities to explore faith, foster community, promote creative learning and leadership development through exceptional Christian hospitality. Uniting Venues SA is more than just one campsite or conference centre; we are purpose-built across five locations in the state to suit your needs – whatever they may be. The addition of Beyond Limits has expanded our influence beyond the physical constraints of our venues. We’re more than venues – we’re in the business of building temporary communities, for memories that last a lifetime. We also create opportunities to develop a genuine relationship between First Peoples and Second Peoples with the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress in South Australia and Covenanting. We help to resource international partnerships held by congregations and support existing Synod international partnerships with the Presbyterian Church of the Republic of Korea and the United Church of Christ of the Philippines. Culturally and linguistically diverse, multicultural ministries and migrant faith communities are supported to find a connection in the Synod and we educate, train and resource congregations to better embrace their multicultural nature. This also includes supporting Second Generation members of the community who have grown up in a migrant culture within western society. We work with the Synod to create a Christian response to injustices in the world e.g. refugee and asylum seekers, domestic violence, creation care and more. UnitingCare SA
The UnitingCare SA network comprises of 23 separately incorporated (and non-incorporated) organisations that deliver community care, aged care, health care and education in order to provide support to the vulnerable. In 2020 as the state responded to the COVID-19 pandemic Emergency Relief Centres provided food relief. Some of these Emergency Relief Centres came into being as a result of long-term welfare work of church congregations and some have been newly established as a way of serving their wider communities.
This year over 81,000 serves of food have been provided with each one of these numbers representing an entire family, sometimes multiple generations. Overall the South Australian UnitingCare network includes over 11,000 employees and 3,000 volunteers and over 2,500 staff and volunteers within the schools associated with the Uniting Church. These organisations share a history and a mission with the church to continue to support and nurture the future wellbeing of people here in South Australia. Photo: Bec Preston

The word ‘Wimala’ comes from the Adnyamanthanha people of the Northern Flinders Ranges and means ‘business ground.’ Adnyamathanha Elder Charles Jackson explained that the word is used to describe a place where Yura’s (people) would gather together to discuss rules and for how we live and work together, how we behave and treat one another, and how we gather and make decisions together. Each family would be represented and invited to participate, and no-one would be excluded – it was a place where everyone was included. Being Wimala ensured that it was community-focussed and driven, and
\

that it had a collective leadership approach with shared responsibilities amongst families. This name helps us to create a sense of who we are as a Presbytery – a people coming together to do the work of the presbytery, where everyone is encouraged to participate, and no-one is left out. The name of Wimala, together with our mission statement – Gather, Connect, Go, helps us to see ourselves not just as individuals or as isolated congregations, but as part of something bigger, a part of the South Australian Synod of the Uniting Church, a part of Christ’s church in the world.

NOTES:
Placements and Safe Church oversees the process for the placement of ministers in collaboration with the presbyteries. This includes providing resources for congregations and ministers, discerning appropriate ministers to suggest for vacancies, and doing the administration when these changes of placements are successful.
\
Placements & Safe Church
Often a complex process we balance the needs of ministers and other leaders, the hopes of the local congregations and organisations as well as the vision for the whole of the Synod. We oversee the various components of Safe Church which includes screening and provide a Called to Care program to inform leaders of their responsibilities with strategies to help to develop congregational culture where all people are welcome and safe. We collaborate nationally to develop educational resources and templates that help build a safe church culture; and we engage in theological reflection to continue to develop our understanding and motivation for building a culture of safety. Our work also involves training chaplains in Disaster and Recovery Ministries, strengthening relationships with government agencies and NGOs involved in disaster response and recovery; and deploying and resourcing chaplains when a disaster is declared. We creatively respond and support congregations as they recover from a disaster in their community. Photo: Bec Preston

Chaplaincy Chaplains serve across a wide range of ministry locations – Adelaide Airport, Correctional services, Defence forces, Disability services, hospitals (both public and private), residential aged care facilities in rural and city locations, schools and at Flinders University. Chaplains are an integral part of the institution they work in with a focus on pastoral and spiritual care. They offer a valuable ministry at significant moments in people’s lives – whether sitting with the deepest pain experienced, through to sharing in times of great joy. Spirituality respects, and can transcend differences of denomination and religion, recognising aspects of grace in all. A chaplain
makes themselves available to ‘walk alongside’ everyone they come into contact with in their workplace. They enable questions of life and death, reality and meaning, fear and hope to be articulated in a manner that encourages an exploration of these issues in an honest, caring environment. Pastoral care is a caring resource at the client’s point of need. It allows the client to ‘set the agenda’ with the chaplain being available to journey with the client as a vulnerable, caring, listening fellow human. The chaplain may provide a spiritual perspective and a liturgical resource as a tangible adjunct to pastoral ministry.

Engagement Team Mid-year 2020 saw a re-structure and the previous area within the Synod office known as ‘Communications’ became the Engagement Ministry Centre. Although small, the dedicated team made up of Bec, Win and Bridget turn over a vast amount of communication-related materials and activities each year in support of Synod departments, Presbyteries, congregations and related organisations.
Every day is different – whether it’s delivering a website to a congregation as part of the Congregational Website Program, producing New Times, posting up-to-date information on a range of social media channels, designing flyers, booklets, pull-up banners, logos etc. The list is comprehensive as we continue to focus on supporting the Uniting Church in South Australia, its voice, its ministry and service to its people.
We look to 2021 with excitement knowing that there will be challenges along the way which we will meet head on as we continue to design with flair and produce words that make an impact – knowing that we play an important part in the creation of messages of faith. Photo: Darren Clements
