Mount Warmth UnitingCare Mount Gambier Sarah* and John* were expecting their first baby this past winter. They were living in a tent at a paid campsite (using the camp kitchen and showers) while waiting on the Housing Trust list and trying to save for a private rental. It was a double blow when someone stole their camping gear from the campsite. They came to UnitingCare Mount Gambier for help. Thanks to funds from Pancake Day, the organisation has been able to keep a stock of backpack swags and polar fleece sleeping bags. Sarah and John were able to take some warm bedding with them as they moved into a friend’s shed, where they hoped to be safer. Funds raised by Pancake Day supporters go right back into the community here in SA! Thank you for your generous support!

Warm beds in winter UnitingSA New sheets, towels & bedding help families start afresh People experiencing financial hardship or homelessness in Adelaide’s west have received much-needed support, thanks to funds raised through Pancake Day. UnitingSA used the funds to provide essential items such as bedding and household appliances to families and individuals doing it tough during winter. UnitingSA’s Anti-Poverty Team Leader Cindy Adey said the funds ensured people could enjoy a cooked meal and keep warm – something many people in the community take for granted. “By providing these items to families, it means they could use their limited income on other necessities such as medication, school fees or utility bills, which they otherwise would not be able to afford,” Ms Adey said. “It’s a situation that is foreign to people who have not experienced poverty or disadvantage but it is all too common for so many people. The funds raised through Pancake Day go a long way to helping us relieve some of this financial stress experienced in our community.” UnitingSA worker Tashara Hague said many of the people who benefited from the funds were experiencing tough times A grateful recipient stacks the sheets and through no fault of their own. “One recipient was a mother with two young children, who had recently escaped domestic towels high. Her kids were so excited to get brand new sheets! violence. She was forced to leave the situation with only the belongings that could fit in their backpacks. Brand new sheets, towels and bedding meant that they could start fresh in their new accommodation and keep warm in the middle of a cold Adelaide winter”. In addition to raising vital funds, UnitingSA’s Pancake Day event also provides a great opportunity each year to engage the local community and have a chat over a free pancake in Port Adelaide. Thank you to everyone who has thought about those doing it tough and donated to Pancake Day. Your contribution makes a huge difference!

UnitingCare Glenelg It’s their social hour, their regular café UnitingCare Glenelg is an outreach of St Andrew’s by the Sea Uniting Church. Every Tuesday night they open their doors to the wider Glenelg community through Mary’s Kitchen, which started in 2002. In those days it was just a few people who had been coming to the church for food relief. Since that time it has steadily grown by word of mouth to 40-50 guests each week. The bulk of people who come to Mary’s Kitchen aren’t homeless, though they are often in a lower socio-economic demographic, including older women like Julie and Beth. Mary’s Kitchen is its own community. It’s their social hour, their regular café, and they feel comfortable there with a sense of belonging. Some people have been coming since the first day like Johnny who sings ‘Danny Boy’ every Christmas and on special occasions. The whole community listens with smiles to his crooning and clap furiously when he’s done. Because of Pancake Day, UnitingCare Glenelg was able to purchase table trolleys which enable the volunteers to move the tables in and out of the church hall quickly and safely. Bring on the food!

Uniting in Care Salisbury Fighting loneliness and hunger The sun is shining brightly on the newly-renovated building on Brown Terrace in Salisbury. There is clanking and laughter as the volunteers begin setting up for another day at the drop-in centre. The coffee is percolating and muffins and cakes are being set out. This is a space that everyone in the whole community is invited enter into and have a cuppa every Monday to Thursday. People from all walks of life come on Wednesdays when the room is bustling with friendly faces enjoying lunch together. They’ve even started a band! All this in addition to the emergency relief that is available to residents of Salisbury Council. Supporters of Pancake Day will be pleased to know that their funds have helped Uniting in Care in this quest for community. This year a number calling system to help people know when it’s their turn at the fruit and veg stand was purchased. In addition, a large rice cooker (replacing four!), and a display case to keep the muffins fresh have been put into action.

A million thanks to the people who care enough to support Pancake Day.

Food is an important part of building community

Most people come in for a cuppa at 9.30am but it‘s difficult to keep food hot for the latecomers at 11. Pancake Day was able to assist with three bainsmarie which help the food to stay hot and safe. The average morning’s group consists of around 25 people. Some are homeless, but a large number of the group are really lonely and this is such a great opportunity for them to have a conversation or share a story with another person.

The food that is left over gets packaged and handed out at the front. Nothing goes to waste!

UnitingCare Copper Triangle Working to help homeless youth UnitingCare Copper Triangle (UCCT), together with Kadina Wesley Uniting Church, is launching into a bold new plan to build two specially designed “studio style” units adjacent to the church buildings. These units would be managed by Uniting Care Copper Triangle for emergency housing for young people. The concept involves a mentoring and support programme to enable a young person who is homeless to have a safe place to establish themselves. They would then move into alternative rental accommodation within 3-12 months. The proposal is conceptual and will require the proper approval processes. The grant funds have enabled UCCT to have some concept plans prepared, which will make the process going forward much easier.

Pancake Day’s main aim is to eliminate the structures of poverty. More than temporary relief, UCCT’s plans could change young lives.

Joylene Potter, Paul Thomas, Moss Potter and Rev Linda Forsyth discuss the concept plans

UnitingCare Kapunda Country needs The barriers for homeless community members in Kapunda and regional areas are different to those who live in metropolitan areas. Limited public transport means that people are unable to access the shelters, emergency relief and accommodation that are available in the city. Swags provided by UnitingCare Kapunda give clients a degree of safety against a cold night in the bush. Care packs which consist of toiletries, socks, underwear and cleansing wipes help with immediate needs. Blankets, towels and food items are also made available. While a swag isn’t an final outcome for someone struggling with homelessness (including couch surfing), this contact enables UnitingCare Kapunda to be able to offer some options and strategies relating to the often multiple complex needs. Referrals to health services, financial counselling and more assist people to get appropriate help and support better long term outcomes. UnitingCare Kapunda is very grateful to have received Pancake Day funding this year and to help vulnerable community members to feel valued and engage with support systems.
