Unique tailor made holidays from The Independent Traveller
South Africa
Memories in the making
Use our expertise to get you there South Africa is a unique country and known as the rainbow nation, as it encompasses many different peoples from varying ethnic backgrounds. There are many reasons why you should consider South Africa for your next holiday destination, particularly if that holiday is planned for the winter months in the UK. Excellent winter sunshine, direct flights with no jetlag on a wide variety of airlines all
mean that South Africa is a leading contender for winter holidays. In South Africa there are great beaches, wonderful and varied scenery, a wide diversity of hotels from comfortable bed and breakfast to some of the leading hotels of the world, first class malaria free safari, Kruger National Park, fantastic whale watching opportunities, the Garden Route, Cape Point, the Drakensberg
Mountains, the historic battlefields, the list goes on and on as to what South Africa has to offer. Our company has been sending clients to South Africa since the end of apartheid and has built up an enviable expertise in not only the main tourist destinations, but many of the off the beaten track destinations as well.
Complete peace of mind
Bank on our experience
At first sight booking on the internet does seem a good way to book your holiday. However: compare our prices and we think you will find them exceptionally competitive. Remember that when you book elements individually on the internet you may have no financial protection whatsoever. For instance if you were to book a British Airways flight and a hotel stay separately on the internet and there were problems with either, then there is no financial protection from ABTA, ATOL or IATA. You can only achieve complete peace of mind by booking with an operator like The Independent Traveller, who holds ABTA, IATA and ATOL credentials
It is easy to book, but very costly to un-book items through an internet site. Our expertise and knowledge are included free when you book with us. Our directors have been travelling to South Africa ever since the end of apartheid and not only have we sent many individuals, but countless groups as well, so our knowledge of South Africa is extensive.
hotel. Throughout the trip you have a 24 hour contact number for our agents to aid you if there were any problems along the way.
How do I start to get a quote? You can ring 01509 618800 or e-mail: southafrica@uni-travel.co.uk or visit our website: www.itissouthafrica..co.uk and give us an idea of what you want.
No hidden costs At first sight many prices on the internet seem cheaper than those produced in brochures such as ours. Our prices include all local taxes, are quoted in pounds sterling and are guaranteed once paid for that they will not increase with exchange rate variations. Additionally many web sites, particularly South African sites, do not include the applicable taxes until the very last point of booking. It can come as a great surprise when between 17% and 20% is then added to the supposedly cheap cost of your hotel room.

Planning your perfect holiday Our ground agents One of our biggest selling points is that we work exclusively with one ground agent in South Africa, who has served our needs since the end of apartheid. Each and every client is personally met at the airport of arrival, their documents and final vouchers are handed to them, and they are helped in picking up their car or to their first
We always ask for a phone number and generally prefer to talk to clients on the phone just to assess exactly what their ideas are. From that conversation we then produce a quote, which is sent to you in writing either by e-mail or by post. We are normally able to do this within three working days of receiving your request for a quote. If we cannot do it in that period we will come back to you and let you know when the quote will be available.

What if I want to change it?
Watch the sunset in Africa
All of our quotations are put together on an individual basis and we are happy to change it in line with your individual requirements. Our job is to ensure that you limit what you want to do to what is reasonable to do within one day.
South Africa is a safe and convenient holiday destination that will more than exceed your expectations. Our company has vast experience working in South Africa and coupled with the excellent support of our South African ground agents we are able to offer one of the most comprehensive holiday planning services to South Africa. Whatever your needs we are sure that we can produce a holiday that will exceed your expectations.
What if I want something that is not in the brochure? Brochures of this nature are never the complete item. As I am sure you can appreciate with all our experience a brochure full of all our ideas would be something like the Encyclopaedia Britannica. We often pride ourselves; if we can’t source it and book it, then it probably doesn’t exist.
Just the ticket Your tickets and documentation are normally produced two/three weeks prior to your departure date. If you live locally you may choose to come and collect them, otherwise we will post them to you. Your documentation pack includes tickets, maps, hotel and car vouchers and our much acclaimed “Top Tips”, which includes valuable information with regard to the areas that you will be travelling in.
How do I go about booking it? Once you have accepted our quotation we will then go ahead and request the hotels from our suppliers. With many of the hotels we have block space and in many hotels we have our own preallocated rooms, some of which have unique features.
Contents
What happens if I have a problem whilst I am away? Our ground agents in South Africa operate a 24 hour contact number, or alternatively you can contact our office answer phone and we will help to resolve any problems for you. You are supported throughout your trip from start to finish.

Flights Imagine boarding a plane in the U.K. and some 12 hours later you are at the very tip of the great vibrant continent of Africa. We do not work exclusively with one airline but work as your agent in the changing market place to find the best deal for you. For some it might be the cheapest deal, for others the ease of local airport departure or the best deal on a premium seat upgrade. We always show you alternatives without the need to spend hours on a computer. Impartial advice for the best deals With over 35 years of experience in buying airfares for clients travelling around the world we feel that we can offer a service that is second to none. Rather than just pick a preferred airline we will normally give you at least two options of air travel, selecting from the very best deals available from a multitude of suppliers. Our brochure doesn’t contain any airline prices as the current fluid situation in the airline industry means that a continued series of seat sales and special deals are on offer and that any prices printed are nearly meaningless by the time the ink is dry on the brochure.
(5) Your complete holiday arrangements booked by us are fully covered financially by ABTA, ATOL and IATA, so that you can book in complete peace of mind.
Do you have upgraded seats available? Yes, with all of our airline partners we have some upgrades to Premier Economy and Business Class dependent upon the airline. Many of these are at prices well below the normal published price issued by the airline and we feel that we can offer an excellent choice of upgraded options should you so desire.
Should I book it myself on the net?
Which airlines do you deal with?
We are happy to book ground arrangements only, and many clients are able to utilise their air miles for their holiday arrangements. If booking directly on the net we would ask you to bear in mind the following factors:
Over the years we have built up an amazing network of contacts and contracts with virtually every major airline flying to Africa. Among the airlines we work with are South African Airways, British Airways, Air Namibia, Nationwide, Fly Globespan, Virgin, KLM, Air France and Lufthansa. Each airline offers different options, pricing structures and some offer the ability of regional departures thus saving the need to fly down to London before your flight to Africa.
(1) Cheap flights can very quickly become expensive at the last push of the button when such items as flight surcharges and taxes are added. We quote them right at the start. (2) Most “cheap” flights mean full payment at the time of booking, most of the flights that we offer allow deposit payment and the balance to be paid 12 weeks prior to departure. (3) Flight schedule changes by some of the less reliable charter airlines, sometimes by several days, can play havoc with carefully made travel plans. In high season it is often very difficult and expensive to change pre-existing arrangements. (4) Most web sites show only their own flights. It is our policy to examine and quote you a flight option with all the reliable airlines serving your destination.
Points to remember ● Most airlines operating to and from Africa fly overnight both ways to your end destination. Our airline contracts enable us to fly onwards to smaller non gateway cities and we would be pleased to supply additional information with regard to this service. ● The flight is an important part of your holiday and it is worth some time and effort to ensure that the flights selected meet your needs. ● Make sure you tap into our vast amount of experience and expertise in dealing with airlines.
Are fuel surcharges and airport user fees included in your pricing? We quote our airfares including current taxes and airport user fees, but exclusive of fuel surcharges which are added at the time of ticketing. In the quotation given to you at the time of booking we will indicate to you the current fuel surcharge price if you were to have booked and paid in full for your flight at the time of booking. This way we feel gives a clear indication of the total cost of your airline flights.

made holidays from The Independent Traveller Drive from Knysna to George via Mossel Bay, the site of South Africa’s only oil well, Breede River to Hermanus. Between June and November the coastline as far north as Port Elizabeth provides a home for over half the world’s species of whales and dolphins. Hermanus offers the largest concentration of Southern Right Whales anywhere in the world with daily sightings from land right from the town centre. Overnight Hermanus.
Day 5 Wine and Mountain Passes A short drive from Cape Town you enter the winelands area world famous for the production of South Africa’s fine wines, ports and brandies. Towns such as Paarl, Stellenbosh and Franschhoek will be familiar to those who enjoy South Africa’s fine wines. Many clients elect to add an extra day in this area. Our route deviates from the norm via Montagu, Barrydale, Ladismith and Calitzdorp to Oudtshoorn. Magnificent rolling farmlands stretch for miles. Overnight Oudtshoorn area.
Day 6 Ostrich and Caves When ostrich feathers were a requirement of every lady Oudtshoorn was a booming town. Latterly with the discovery that ostrich meat is low in cholesterol its fortunes have returned and in the area there are numerous ostrich farms, which are well worth a visit. Cango Caves, a short drive away, are some of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere and these magnificent limestone caves, as big as many cathedrals, are highly recommended. Overnight Oudtshoorn.
to be found on our Christmas tables. Visit Grahamstown, the home of the monument to the British settlers of South Africa. Continue on to the seaside town of Port Elizabeth for your overnight stay. Note: it is on this day that you would add in a safari in the malaria free Eastern Cape area – see our safari notes.
Day 10 The Classic Garden Route Today the classic Garden Route, which stretches from Storms River in the east to Mossel Bay in the west is one of the most spectacular scenic areas of South Africa. In this area there is something for everybody: magnificent coastal beaches and secluded coves, nestled between the mountain range and the sea. In the heart of this area is the town of Knysna, scenically nestled around the lagoon world-famous for its wonderful oysters. You will enjoy the spectacular scenery and we will send you off the main highway to visit some of the small coves and beaches before arriving at Knysna, which will be your home for the next three nights.
Day 11 Featherbed and Oysters Day 7 The Swartberg Pass and the Great Karoo Today you will cross the Great Karoo, an area of semi-desert that stretches from Uniondale to Graaff-Reinet. As the earlier settlers crossed this area, many on Ox carts, they discovered ostrich. For the adventurous this morning we would suggest a detour over the Swartberg Pass, higher than Ben Nevis, offering some spectacular views. You will arrive into Graaff-Reinet mid to late afternoon depending on which route you take. Time to enjoy this preserved Cape Dutch town with its wide strands and spectacular Cape Dutch architecture. Overnight Graaff-Reinet.
Day 8 Cape Dutch and Desolation Valley This morning perhaps an opportunity to try a walking tour of Graaff-Reinet, which lets you into the secrets of this Cape Dutch colony, its magnificent churches, architecture and history. In the afternoon a visit to Desolation Valley, described by some as South Africa’s Grand Canyon, offering wonderful views particularly at sunset. Overnight in Graff-Reinet.
A full day in and around the Knysna area, perhaps an opportunity to take a trip around the lagoon and across to the Featherbed Nature Reserve at the Knysna Heads, a small opening in the cliff face where the sea pounds and races through a narrow gorge into the sheltered waters of the Knysna lagoon.
Fly Drive
Day 13 Whales and Oil
Day 14 Whales, Great White Sharks, Wine and Golf A full day in the Hermanus area and possibly the option of taking a cruise from Gansbaai, Here the boats during the whale watching season get you upfront and personal with the magnificent Southern Right Whales. At other times of the year the area is famous for the colonies of great white sharks that feed on the Cape Fur Seals as they give birth. The local micro climate between the sea and the mountains produces some of the highest quality wines in South Africa Whatever the season Hermanus has a lot to offer including some excellent local golf courses and some wonderful beaches. Overnight Hermanus.
Day 15 Your last day – Homeward Bound All too soon your trip to South Africa comes to an end. You will go through the Franschhoek Pass back through the Cape wineries and a last opportunity to buy some South African wines to take home with you. Your flight will leave in the early evening arriving back in the UK the next morning.
Day 12 A Train ride to remember Amongst the many other things you can do in this area is the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe, one of the few remaining steam trains in South Africa, which travels daily from Knysna to George and returns in the late afternoon. Here you will have the opportunity at lunchtime to enjoy the town of George and some of the best coastal scenery in the whole of Africa. Middelburg

KwaZuluFlyNatal Drive The area between Johannesburg and the Indian Ocean coast around Durban is the Kingdom of KwaZulu Natal. The area encompasses the historic homelands of the Zulu nation, who were once feared and respected throughout Southern Africa as one of the most powerful indigenous people. So famous is the name that “Zulu” is the call sign used around the world for the letter Z in the International Aviation Alphabet. leading up to and during the battle. Certainly an emotional experience, which helps to illustrate what a great nation the Zulu people really are.
Day 4 The Midlands Meander Within this area there is a beautiful day drive known as the Midlands Meander. This allows clients to drive slowly through the area taking in some of the unique sights and historical markers. Return this evening to your hotel in this most scenic area.
Day 7 KwaZulu Natal Coast/ The Dolphin Coast A short drive away is the stunning coastal area north of Durban. The farther north you go the more deserted the beaches become. There are some superb beach resorts in this area and on some of the more deserted beaches the turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. This part of the trip can be expanded to fit your individual schedule. Overnight on the coast.
Day 5 Rorke’s Drift
Day 1 Your first taste of Africa Most flights leave the UK in the early evening and travel through the night to arrive into Johannesburg early the following morning.
A short drive away are some of the most famous battlefield sites of the Zulu Wars. Rorke’s Drift is an emotive visit and also the site of the highest number of VC’s awarded in one battle. Your comfortable lodge in this area, set amongst magnificent scenery, will form your base for the next two days. The visit to Rorke’s Drift is normally done late afternoon to coincide with the timing of the battle and making the whole experience more realistic.
Other things to do in the area We can tailor make other activities. There are a number of safari options, including Phinda – see page 12, adjacent to the St Lucia Wetlands. We can also arrange for you to fly back from Richard’s Bay or Durban, saving the long drive back to Cape Town, at a very reasonable price. If you are looking for a trip with historic interest, outstanding scenery, great food and great beaches this area of South Africa will not disappoint..
Day 6 Isandlwana Day 2 Welcome to Africa You will be met at Johannesburg Airport with our personal Meet & Greet service and a transfer arranged to your hotel in either Johannesburg or Pretoria. The area has much to offer and we will discuss the options for the remainder of the day.
The site of what many acknowledge to be the biggest defeat of the British Army in Africa, which preceded Rorke’s Drift by 24 hours. A short drive away takes you to an open plain dominated by a mountain peak, from this peak your guide will vividly describe what happened in the period Mo
Day 3 Discover the Drakensberg Your car will be delivered to your hotel this morning and you will set out to discover the Drakensberg Mountains, the largest mountain range in South Africa. A collection of mountain ranges, small lakes, breathtaking views and interspersed with some of the most fertile and productive land in the whole of Africa, not surprising that the food is the feature of many hotels in this area. If you enjoy fishing, wildlife viewing (not the big cats), birding, great walking and climbing this area is a definite must. Overnight in the central Drakensberg area.

Safari Enter the Wild Many people will believe that no trip to Africa is complete without a safari to see the majestic animals that roamed the lands before the European migration. South Africa offers some of the best safari on the continent. The sunset in the bush coupled with the sounds and smells of the wilderness is something that will stay with you for a long time. Private lodges or National Park rest camps South African National Parks have a series of rest camps in the Kruger and Addo National Parks. The basic accommodation and self drive safari, which is limited to the hard roads, do offer a very affordable safari experience. To enhance your experience it is always better to add a trip in the large National Park’s vehicles accompanied by a resident game ranger. Please ask us for a quotation. The private game lodges offer rustically luxurious accommodation and prime game viewing off road in small groups, maximum nine, but often fewer. The package will normally be all inclusive, including local drinks, and offer a realistic chance of seeing the Big Five and the Significant Seven. In most cases you will be accompanied by a local tracker and a game warden.
Malaria Free We offer both malaria free and safaris where you should take malaria tablets. Please see individual safari information for details. Malaria free safari does not mean a poorer safari experience, many areas of South Africa are now malaria free.
Length of stay Whilst we recommend a minimum of two nights safari as the absolute minimum, you will find that by staying for three nights you will greatly enhance the amount of game that can be seen.
Age restrictions Policy with regards to children varies from safari to safari. Restrictions are put in place for safety reasons as many small children have limited attention span and noise at the wrong time is both a safety issue and may scare off game that has taken a long time to find. On safaris to very outlying areas clients over 65 may be asked to provide a medical compliance form signed by their doctor.

The Blue Train The colour of luxury Ever since the early development of South Africa rail has been important. In 1932 a deluxe rail service was inaugurated between Johannesburg and Cape Town. Originally called Union Limited, the train soon became known as the “Blue Train” due to its colour. The legend continues today with some of the finest service and accommodation levels to be found on a train anywhere in the world. Dining The Blue Train has always been a showcase of the very best of gourmet cooking in South Africa and of South African wines. On your journey you will be served two lunches in casual elegance, one breakfast and one dinner, although dinner is more formal. The menu contains such South African delicacies as Karoo lamb, ostrich fillet, Knysna oysters and award winning wines.
The Journeys Pretoria – Cape Town and reverse Today the train travels from Pretoria to Cape Town and reverse, a 27 hour journey covering some 1600 km. The scenery is some of the very best that South Africa has to offer and is seen from the ultimate luxury of either your private suite or the wonderfully wood panelled elegance of the Club Car. When you travel from Pretoria to Cape Town an excursion is made to the Kimberley Diamond Museum and the Big Hole, from where some of the world’s most famous diamonds have emerged. On the northbound route from Cape Town to Pretoria a visit is made to the Historic Matijiesfontein.
Cape Town – Port Elizabeth and reverse On a limited number of occasions each year the Blue Train runs excursions from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth and vice versa. Here the journey along the spectacular Garden Route includes a full day excursion to Oudtshoorn including a visit to an ostrich farm and Cango Caves and lunch on this occasion is served off the train. This 40 hour journey encompasses some of the finest coastal scenery in South Africa. Please note that this is a very limited service and full details of the dates can be seen in our accompanying price list and booking conditions.
Your Accommodation The Blue Train is kept deliberately to a small size to ensure that the highest standards of service can be replicated on each and every journey. Your on board accommodation comprises of a maximum of six luxury suites per train and a maximum of 36 deluxe suites per train.
Linking the private suites of the Blue Train are two wooden panelled Lounge and Club cars. The Lounge Car is non-smoking and is where high tea is served, whilst the Club Car allows cigar smoking and is a favourite venue for after dinner drinks and cocktails. Whichever route you choose and whichever type of suite you book, your journey on the Blue Train will be an experience of a lifetime.
The deluxe suites feature either twin beds with a shower or double bed with a bath and hand held shower. Please note that there is a limited number of double bedded suites available per train. The interiors are birch veneer and the bathrooms fitted out with Italian marble. The luxury suites are slightly larger and all have full baths to allow perhaps the ultimate luxury of a bath on a train whilst you cross the spectacular South African scenery. Each carriage contains four deluxe suites or three luxury suites and each has its own personal butler, whose sole job is to look after the guests within the particular carriage. Within the suites, whichever you choose, the fittings are of the very highest standard and would not be amiss in a 5 star hotel.

“
Individual Tailor Made Holidays
”
Our brochure includes many of the key elements to make your trip to South Africa both memorable and enjoyable.
Things you might care to know about your South African Holiday 1.
Our expertise in all aspects of South African travel is based on many years of both group travel and individuals exploring this wonderfully diverse country. When you combine this knowledge with the ground care and assistance from our exclusive ground agents it is no surprise that our holidays continually exceed clients’ expectations.
South Africa is the most southerly and most developed country in Africa. Although large in size it has good road structure and an internal transportation system that allows access to all areas of this beautiful country.
2.
Language - The main languages in South Africa are Afrikaans and English. The indigenous people speak a wide variety of local dialects but most of the younger people will speak Afrikaans or English. There are very few areas in South Africa where you will not be able to make yourself easily understood.
3.
Climate - Located in the Southern Hemisphere the weather is ‘back to front’ to ours in the U.K. Generally the warmest months to visit are Oct-April with the Cape area enjoying a Mediterranean style of climate. The Northern part around Johannesburg has very hot summers with some rain but dry and generally warm winters (our summers)
4.
Driving - You drive on the left hand side of the road on good quality roads. Use our expertise to select the right car for your trip.
5.
Fuel - Currently the fuel price in South Africa is considerably cheaper than the U.K. Petrol stations are always attended and they not only fill your car but clean the windscreen as well! Please note all fuel is paid for in cash but most petrol stations also have small shops and ATM’S.
6.
Taxes - All our rates include current taxes unless otherwise stated. Please allow for this when comparing prices particularly with the internet.
7.
Food - South Africa’s climate allows for a great choice of high quality food to be grown. It is well cooked and presented and varies from ‘meat and two veg’ originating from its Northern European routes to Indian curries brought over by the sugar plantation workers. Whatever your choice the service level and presentation are world class. Expect to pay approx. 50% of the cost of similar meals in the U.K. The wine is great as well!
8.
Tipping - Service comes as standard in South Africa but great service should be rewarded. We will indicate to you appropriate tipping levels with your final documentation.
9.
Is South Africa Safe? - There are areas of South Africa that it would be unwise to travel to. The same can be said of most countries in the world including our own. In the main tourist areas you are perfectly safe and with simple precautions you will encounter nothing but a warm welcome. The expertise of our ground agents and their 24/7 phone number all add to our on the ground care.
10. Vaccinations - We recommend that you consult your own Doctor in respect of any precautions that you should take. Whilst there are no compulsory vaccinations we always recommend that your protection against polio, tetanus and hepatitis are up to date. Several areas mainly in the north require protection for Malaria. The Cape Area at the time of writing is Malaria free as are the Safari areas in the Eastern Cape. Your Doctor has access to the most up to date information. Always use plenty of high factor sun screen. 11. What documents do I need to enter South Africa? - Currently a full 10 year British or E.U. passport valid for at least 6 months after your return date is required. Your passport must also have 2 blank pages. It is the responsibility of all travellers to ensure that they have the right paperwork. If you hold a passport other than those listed above please ask. 12. Foreign Office Travel Advice – The Foreign and Commonwealth Travel Advice Unit may have issued information about your holiday destination. You are advised to check this information on www.fco.gov.uk/knowbeforeyougo . 13. Booking Conditions - Our detailed booking conditions are contained in our combination price list and booking conditions included separately with this brochure. We ask that you review them carefully as they form the basis of contract between yourselves and us in providing your holiday arrangements.
Whatever you expect from a holiday, South Africa has it all. World class beaches, scenery that reflects its diverse nature, history with a rich past, wildlife viewing both on land and at sea, some exceptional hotels and guest houses, food and wine from the very top draw and a genuine warm welcome. Allow us to plan a holiday that will exceed your expectations.
Our Preferred methods of payment Maestro Debit Card Delta Debit Card Cash Payments Cheque Payments
(No Charge) (No Charge) (No Charge) (No Charge)
Methods of payment for which there is a small charge Visa Credit Card (2% of Total Charge) Mastercard (2% of Total Charge) Those of you who are single travellers may feel that the cost per person of your holiday appears higher than it should be. The reason for this supplement is that our contract with the hotels is based on a price per room while our holidays are sold per person, including flights and other elements. Therefore, the per person price for a lone traveller includes the entire room cost. We do not make additional or excessive profits from these sales, the prices charged merely reflect the real cost to us. In some hotels there are rooms that are designed for single occupancy only. In this instance there will normally be a supplement but usually less than when a single person occupies a double room. These single rooms are often smaller and sometimes less well appointed. PHOTOGRAPHIC CREDITS. Our thanks go to the South Africa Tourist Board, our hotel and safari partners and Jean & Malcolm Peasnall for the photographic reference used in this brochure.
