PART X: TO STUFF TOY Stuff toy with anything light and soft you already possess, which is not suitable for salvage. Cut into small strips. PART Y: TO SEW UP Take the two back pieces and join tog by the centre back edges, starting at the 6th garter-st ridge from the lower edge, and continuing up to the 40th ridge. Sew the gusset into the open edges above this seam, as far as the cottons on the front edges which mark the tip of the nose. Sew front edges tog below this gusset, down to the front neck pin mark. Now sew the front to the side edges of the back pieces, from this point down to the lower edge, stretching front to fit. Stuff the body, then sew in the base, placing the cast-on and cast-off edges to the sides. Take under half of one fore leg and sew its side edges to those of the upper half, from the cast-on edges as far as the marked row. Sew one of the feet pieces into base of leg and stuff the leg. Make up other fore leg to match, then sew the narrow cast-off ends of the back flaps together. Sew open ends of actual leg parts to sides of body (below head)

and sew the flaps down flat across the back in a curved “U” shaped line. Sew the “chest marking” flat across front so that its ends meet the two fore legs. Take the two pieces for each hind leg and sew tog by the side edges, then sew a foot piece to base of leg, after which stuff leg and sew open end to base of body, to give a sitting position. Mark toes with five big blanket sts in white wool. Take one ear lining and sew it to edges of ear section, stretching lining to fit. Slightly gather cast-on edges and sew to head. Make other ear to match. PART Z: EMBROIDERY For each “eye”, embroider a panda eye shape of black chain stitch 6 garterst ridges in depth, then sew an oval bead or button in centre. A few stem stitches of dark red, worked on the black oval, just above the bead, improve the effect. Mark nose with a blob satin stitch with 2 small slanting stitches each side for nostrils. For mouth work a shallow triangular shape in chain stitches with black wool just beneath the nose.
