UNIVERSITY OF STAVANGER NORWAY
Dramatic landscapes. Fascinating history. Charming city center. Historic architecture. Numerous festivals. Norway’s center for oil and energy. Innovative industry. International business communities. A modern and international university.
Paz Lara Cabrero, Spain - Exchange student, The Faculty of Arts and Education It is not a secret that Norway is a very expensive country for a foreign student. Unfortunately for my pocket, I felt the urge to fulfil my long-standing dream of getting to know this country, full of pure and unspoilt natural landscapes. So I started saving a year in advance and managed to gain an unforgettable experience. The Comparative Educational Studies programme proved an extraordinary opportunity to enhance my academic qualifications. Students and professionals jointly explored such topics as inclusion or bullying. We brainstormed, interchanged and discussed present-day educational systems relating to modern society. Through international dialogue, we became aware of our role as future educators. Visiting schools, nursery schools and science farms gave us a broad view and understanding of the state-of-the-art position in Norwegian education. During this comprehensive course, based on a multidisciplinary approach, we had the opportunity to attend a variety of workshops on such subjects as outdoor science, outdoor physical education, djembe playing, and Norwegian folklore and storytelling. In the home economics seminar, we even cooked and tried out traditional Norwegian recipes.

Delia Schipor, Romania - Master of Arts in Literacy Studies Studying in an international environment such as the UiS is similar to travelling all over the world, only much cheaper and easier. Literacy studies are a complex field, strongly intertwined with linguistics, history, sociolinguistics, pedagogy and anthropology, so a wide range of study options is available. From the literacy practices of English-speaking communities in the Middle Ages to the contemporary challenges of multilingualism, I have acquired invaluable knowledge which has created scope for new academic development. I enjoy the seminars, when everyone can participate in discussions with a genuine feeling that their opinions are valued by the gifted tutors who offer competent guidance. Individual work is definitely favoured, which provides independence while enhancing responsibility. I have to admit I was a bit scared when I heard about the six-hour written exams, which is roughly double the time I was used to, but I soon discovered that getting high marks in such exams is twice as satisfactory.

Nancy Donawita Haro, Indonesia - Master of Science in Biological Chemistry There are many different ways of trying to make sense of nature and life itself. To me, it’s always been interesting to learn and understand the biological and chemical basis, the themes that hold all living organisms together. I have just submitted my master’s thesis, in which I studied one of the proteins in photosynthesis machinery in plants. I think plants are our future. They can be our source of food, medicine and even energy. Plants are so smart. I’ve had a great time studying biological chemistry at the UiS. I’ve experienced the international city of Stavanger, with its incredible surrounding landscapes, combined with an encouraging study environment and various student activities on campus (like climbing, Coffee Around the World and salsa, to mention just a few). Imagine that!

Unegbu Celestine Tobenna, Nigeria - Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering Current position: engineer – GE Oil & Gas Norway Studying petroleum engineering (drilling) at the UiS was very fulfilling for me. We had an international class with people from various countries. Think of attending a university closely connected with the industry – we were literally inside it. We even took some courses in various companies. Our field trips were also very interesting: one to the Pyrenees and another to Svalbard, an archipelago in the Arctic, 1 000 kilometres from the North Pole. At the end of my studies, I really must say I couldn’t have asked for more.
Marco A. Céspedes Guzmán, Bolivia - Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering Current position: drilling operations engineer – Statoil ASA I enjoyed the international environment, challenging subjects, close collaboration between university and industry, and especially student life. Even though the MSc programme requires you to spend a lot of time reading and doing assignments, I’ve been able to combine it with enjoying life in Norway: exploring it from Svalbard with its polar bears to Oslo – an amazing city – walking along the great fjords, fishing some salmon, practising new sports such as skiing and curling, and even holding a part-time job. But best of all has been the first-hand experience of Stavanger, the country’s “oil capital”. I’ve always been interested in offshore activities, and this MSc programme gave me the great experience of going offshore in the Norwegian North Sea, one of the harshest environment for drilling in the world, with Norwegian oil company Statoil. If petroleum engineering is your driving force and if you like challenges, this programme may suit you. And, believe me, Norway is not that cold – but don’t try to buy beer in a supermarket after 8 pm!
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS A bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering or equivalent with at least 30 ECTS (equivalent to a total workload of 50% of an academic year) in mathematics/statistics.

Dr Alejandro Escalona - Associate Professor, Head of the Petroleum Geosciences section of the Department of Petroleum Engineering The Petroleum Geosciences Engineering programme is a unique combination of geology, geophysics and engineering, where students gain skills in several areas of competence necessary for success in the oil and gas industry today. Additional benefits of the programme include an experienced international faculty with a research focus on the petroleum industry, industry-standard state-of-the-art computer labs and software, field excursions to key geological localities in Europe and access to major oil companies in Stavanger (“oil capital” of Norway), which opens opportunities for summer internships and master’s thesis projects.
Brendan M. Figueira, Trinidad and Tobago - Master of Science in Petroleum Geosciences Engineering Current workplace: Statoil ASA I have never been one to follow the crowd. In 2009, when I graduated with a BSc in Petroleum Geoscience, it was expected that, like 99% of previous Trinbagonian geoscientists, I would go to the UK or the USA to obtain my master’s qualification. But I wanted something different. Fortunately, I heard about the MSc in Petroleum Geosciences Engineering from a professor in the geosciences section at the UiS at a conference in Trinidad. So, around 11 PM in late August 2010, I stepped off a Norwegian flight at Stavanger Sola airport and was greeted with a blast of chill wind in my face. Fortunately, the Norwegian people are the opposite of the weather and I have made some good friends here. The study programme itself is on par with any other geoscience master’s degrees and has prepared me well for a career in the energy industry. I wrote my thesis on an area in Trinidad while being part of the first Imperial Barrel Award (IBA) team from Norway. Overall, I have never regretted my decision to study at the UiS and would urge everyone to apply. Who knows, I may bump into you in the corridor someday?

Riad El-Wardani, Australia - Master of Science in Offshore Technology Current workplace: GE Oil and Gas Norway The MSc in Offshore Technology has given me the skills I need in coming up with practical solutions to everyday challenges for the asset management of subsea systems. Working with Statoil on the Statfjord intrafield pipeline system, I have been able to apply the knowledge acquired through my studies and see the direct relevance of what I am learning to the workplace. Lecturers who have been in the industry for more than 20 years or who are still industry-based provide invaluable information on the practical application of what you learn in the classroom. After my first year on the master’s programme, I was promoted by one of my industry-based professors and ended up joining Statoil as a summer student before continuing to work for it part-time during my semesters. Away from the lecture theatres and laboratories, the UiS offers a vibrant student life. Different events are always happening on and around campus, from concerts at the Folken student centre to sports competitions and cultural presentation at the Bokkafé cafe. We even have a student bar. During my time at the UiS, I also took part in the volleyball team and joined regular indoor football sessions at the student sports centre.
Hermanto Ang, Indonesia - Master of Science in Offshore Technology Current workplace: GE Oil and Gas Norway Coming to Norway, especially to the UiS, was one of my best decisions so far. Stavanger is the Norwegian “oil capital”, and offshore technology is the core development of the country’s oil and gas industry. I would say that studying at the UiS enriched me with a roller-coaster feeling. Many dynamics have been involved, from the pressures in class to the excitement offered by Norwegian culture, which is totally new for me. Professional career opportunities are also wide open, since UiS graduates are well recognised by both multinational and national companies operating in the region. I am currently working as a subsea operations engineer for GE Oil and Gas, which I believe will provide me with tonnes of experiences. I am looking forward to seeing you all here and enjoying the best that the UiS and Norway have to offer.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS A specialisation in industrial asset management or risk management: a bachelor’s degree in any engineering discipline. Specialisation in marine and subsea technology: a bachelor’s degree in mechanical, civil, marine or mechatronics engineering.

Amanda Allshouse, USA - Exchange student, The Faculty of Social Science Studying abroad in Norway really was the highlight of my university experience. Especially studying Hotel and Tourism Management, being abroad and learning how people from other countries think and behave broadened my perspective by leagues. The classes I was enrolled in were pretty interesting, and the teachers really knew how to spin the material to generate class discussions that took advantage of the diversity in the classroom. We learned the most, I think, when we got on tangents and began asking questions of our peers and learning how the hospitality industry looked to them in their own country. The understanding I gained of these worldwide perspectives was one of the most valuable aspects I took home from my semester abroad. Even though I had never been to Europe before and definitely didn’t know any of the Norwegian language, I felt extremely welcome by the UiS international student staff and appreciated all the events that the school organized so that we could meet other internationals and Norwegian students. Whether from organized events, spontaneous parties in the dorms, or even just meeting up at the campus bar, Tappetårnet, for a beer, I made lifelong friends and unforgettable memories during my time at UiS.

Ronny Dressel, Germany - Exchange student, Faculty of Science and Technology Current position: technical manager for engineering and design of pressure reduction equipment at RMG by Honeywell. I chose to do an exchange programme in Norway because of its well-developed oil and gas industry. I study petroleum engineering, specialising in natural gas transmission, and the fact that the UiS offered a wide range of courses in this academic field determined my choice of destination. I was especially interested in offshore pipeline systems, risers and gas transmission equipment such as compressors and offshore installations, and the UiS, which is closely connected to the local industry, proved an excellent place for exploring these topics. When I arrived at UiS, I got a good overall impression – the dormitories were clean and of good quality, the International Office assisted us in a professional manner. The lectures were practically oriented. One thing that surprised me was that written exams lasted for at least three hours. Apart from the daily routine at the university, I took part in a lot of extracurricular activities. I joined the Society of Petroleum Engineers Student Chapter, which gave me the opportunity to attend a variety of events organised by the local oil and gas industry. By joining the university handball team, I met a lot of Norwegian students. I also made friends with people from all over the world. The Erasmus student group was quite large and always ready to have fun. In my spare time, I travelled around in Norway and enjoyed its mountain peaks, picturesque fjords and magnificent scenery.

Lina Kuzmicheva, Russia - Norwegian Language and Culture programme The best thing is to feel how you emerge into the language and suddenly everything people around you say makes more sense. Keep in mind that the effectiveness of the programme depends a lot on your personal effort and on the time you are willing to invest, both inside and outside the classroom.
