Dramatic landscapes. Fascinating history. Charming city center. Historic architecture. Numerous festivals. Norway’s center for oil and energy. Innovative industry. International business communities. A modern and international university.
Paz Lara Cabrero, Spain – Exchange student, The Faculty of Arts and Education It is not a secret that Norway is a very expensive country for a foreign student. Unfortunately for my pocket, I felt the urge to fulfil my long-standing dream of getting to know this country, full of pure and unspoilt natural landscapes. So I started saving a year in advance and managed to gain an unforgettable experience. The Comparative Educational Studies programme proved an extraordinary opportunity to enhance my academic qualifications. Students and professionals jointly explored such topics as inclusion or bullying. We brainstormed, interchanged and discussed present-day educational systems relating to modern society. Through international dialogue, we became aware of our role as future educators. Visiting schools, nursery schools and science farms gave us a broad view and understanding of the state-of-theart position in Norwegian education. During this comprehensive course, based on a multidisciplinary approach, we had the opportunity to attend a variety of workshops on such subjects as outdoor science, outdoor physical education, djembe playing, and Norwegian folklore and storytelling. In the home economics seminar, we even cooked and tried out traditional Norwegian recipes.

This charming harbour city was founded in 1125 and ranks today as Norway’s fourth largest, with approximately 130 000 inhabitants. It is a bustling place, filled with vitality and youthful energy. The Stavanger region is Norway’s most productive area. Its expanding business environment is based on a thousand years of maritime history. The Stavanger region has been the national hub for innovative industry for several decades, partly owing to the petroleum industry and partly to a spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship which existed long before the oil age. Stavanger is known as Norway’s “oil and energy capital”. Stavanger today has a culturally diverse image, and is home to more than 180 nationalities. It has a dynamic labour market, and many international companies are represented here. All these features mean that the city offers excellent opportunities for business, education, cultural events and leisure. The UiS embraces the globalised world, but never forgets to nurture its local, regional and national roots. This stance shapes its study programmes, its international collaborations and the kind of students it attracts.

Through the extensive network of contacts built up by the highly qualified and passionate teaching staff, students had an opportunity to meet many practitioners. Researchers also came from as far as New Zealand to speak to us. We even met public authorities with whom the organisation of big social events was coordinated. This allowed us to learn more about the “behind the scenes” aspects of leading a company in the hotel/tourism field, organising meetings and events, or doing our research. Above and beyond that, Stavanger is a beautiful city which offers a wide range of activities outside the classroom. Be sure to check out the university’s social and sports clubs – a great first step towards making new friends on your arrival in Norway.

Dina Abazovic, Bosnia and Herzegovina - Master of Arts in Literacy Studies I chose to apply to UiS primarily because the study programme at the Department of Cultural Studies and Languages looked very appealing to me, combining literary studies with linguistics, and provided studying in the international environment. It also looked like a challenge to come to Stavanger and not another Norwegian city, try a different way of living. Literacy studies offered something that seemed more refreshing than the usual curriculum for the Master’s programme in English Language and Literature, with more focus on the study of reading, writing and the written text in socio-cultural context. I also love the Norwegian language and nature, the smell of the sea and the kind of isolation one can really enjoy in Stavanger. For students who spend long hours in the library, UiS has a great search engine. Cafeterias offer both warm and fresh food; the facilities are organized to suit the student needs, everything is in vicinity. All the staff is always helpful and very kind. If you are coming to UiS, get ready for six-hours exams and lots of rain - but also for meeting great people and having the experience of a life-time!

Anastasia Titova, Russia - Master of Science in Petroleum Geosciences Engineering After completing my first degree and obtaining 2 years of work experience I realized I wanted to enrich my education with cutting-edge knowledge related directly to the petroleum industry. Geoscience students have a highly comprehensive programme and have to study hard and smartly. Generally speaking, I was surprised to see how much support and help the University provides to its students. For example, there are a lot of entertainment activities and career events, different student organizations, and a wonderful sports center near the faculty building. The most important discovery I’ve made is that the University is open to new ideas. For example, students can develop their own projects, organize events, meetings, participate in new cooperation and have the opportunity to launch something new. It is important that we have an opportunity to learn from highly experienced professionals both in academics and the industrial sphere. During the studies we participate in different projects and competitions such as the Imperial Barrel Award Program, and we can also be teaching assistants. We are also provided with different software and courses (Landmark, Petrel, RMS, Move, Matlab etc. – the most popular among petroleum companies).
Paul Edward Rhodes, the United Kingdom - Master of Science in Petroleum Geosciences Engineering The University of Stavanger (UiS) was a natural choice for pursuing studies in a petroleum based discipline, given its location in the heart of the petroleum industry, certainly in Norway, if not the whole of northern Europe. UiS has a clear advantage over many other universities offering similar programmes in that it is able to draw upon locally based companies in various ways, for example; sponsorship for field work expenses; use of specialist equipment and providing opportunities to receive many lectures and some entire courses from experts working full time for some of the largest industry operator companies in the world. One of the strengths of the Petroleum Geoscience Engineering programme at UiS is the availability of exceptionally high quality professional workstations loaded with the major software programs used by companies in both exploration and production geology. Prior to using these complex programs for class projects, external professional training is provided by the program developers. Such courses are usually only available to industry professionals. I am aware that these skills are not usually expected from graduates, therefore this provides students of the programme with a distinct advantage recognised by hiring companies in the industry, increasing employability.
Isabel Rodriguez Gomez, Spain - Master of Science in Petroleum Geosciences Engineering Since I arrived here everything has been great! The university and the student associations give plenty of opportunities to meet new people by offering different activities and parties. This is a very international university so in less than one month I had friends from all over the world, some of whom I know will be friends for life. There is also a great sport center where you can disconnect from your studies and nice cafeterias for drinking coffee while chilling with your classmates. Regarding my Master’s program, I have to say that it happened to be even better than I expected. Professors, both from the university and from companies, are highly qualified and teach in a very practical way, which is also very different from what I am used to in my hometown university (University of Madrid). Although it has been hard, after one year of my master’s I feel much more prepared for my future professional life. Furthermore, the Petroleum Geosciences department offers so many opportunities for attending courses and conferences or getting involved with projects that enrich the academic life.

Riad El-Wardani, Australia - Master of Science in Offshore Technology The MSc in Offshore Technology has given me the skills I need in coming up with practical solutions to everyday challenges for the asset management of subsea systems. Working with Statoil on the Statfjord intrafield pipeline system, I have been able to apply the knowledge acquired through my studies and see the direct relevance of what I am learning to the workplace. Lecturers who have been in the industry for more than 20 years or who are still industry-based provide invaluable information on the practical application of what you learn in the classroom. After my first year on the master’s programme, I was promoted by one of my industry-based professors and ended up joining Statoil as a summer student before continuing to work for it part-time during my semesters. Away from the lecture theatres and laboratories, the UiS offers a vibrant student life. Different events are always happening on and around campus, from concerts at the Folken student centre to sports competitions and cultural presentation at the Bokkafé cafe. We even have a student bar. During my time at the UiS, I also took part in the volleyball team and joined regular indoor football sessions at the student sports centre.
Christopher Brons-Illing, Germany - Master of Science in Offshore Technology After my Bachelor degree in Maritime Technology I was working three years as a technical project coordinator for an offshore wind farm project. I had a very specific mind-set of what I would expect from a Master’ss degree program. Before I finally made up my mind on where to go, I attended a few lectures (marine operations) here in Stavanger as a guest student the year earlier. The lecture experience and the composition of the course content from the Offshore Technology program fully convinced me. Academically the University of Stavanger (UiS) differs a lot from my last institution. Here you have fewer subjects, however a much greater in-depth knowledge is taught. This means you have to study a lot and consistently. However, the campus offers a great studying environment. The other reason why I choose Stavanger was the ocean. I am a passionate kite surfer and therefore I need the beaches nearby. Speaking about work-life balance, the Norwegians really know how to do that. Norway is a sports and outdoor haven. The University Sports Center is exceptionally good, even offering indoor climbing facilities. Everybody is on their feet and you have numerous possibilities to be active and enjoy the great nature. You will never be bored.

Aoun Aimee, Libanon - Erasmus Mundus Master program in Social Work with Children and Families For the first time, in my student status, I felt that my opinion was valued and taken into account. I also appreciated the internships we did in Stavanger during which we met with many professionals and politicians who managed to spare some of their time for us. The peak experience was when the regional department invited us for a dinner in the canning museum. It was an intensive, well organized program that fed the curiosity of students thirsty for knowledge.

Amanda Allshouse, USA - Exchange student, The Faculty of Social Science Studying abroad in Norway really was the highlight of my university experience. Especially studying Hotel and Tourism Management, being abroad and learning how people from other countries think and behave broadened my perspective by leagues. The classes I was enrolled in were pretty interesting, and the teachers really knew how to spin the material to generate class discussions that took advantage of the diversity in the classroom. We learned the most, I think, when we got on tangents and began asking questions of our peers and learning how the hospitality industry looked to them in their own country. The understanding I gained of these worldwide perspectives was one of the most valuable aspects I took home from my semester abroad.

Honoré Boudinout, France - Exchange student in Mechanical and Civil Engineering I did my exchange semester in the Faculty of Science and Technology, in Mechanical and Civil Engineering. The studies were very interesting, such as taking Subsea Technology that you cannot find anywhere else. UiS gave me the basic knowledge in petroleum engineering and introduced me to this field. The learning system quite different than in France, because you learn more by yourself and you can be more independent. There is not a high quantity of work, but you have to do it steadily. The good thing is that you have enough time to study and learn before exams. The life on campus is pleasant and the Orientation Week gives you all the tools you need, with a proficient and accurate International Office. The Sports Center is also very good, with the best facilities you can find, like I never seen before. In addition, I liked very much to see the mountains every morning, behind the buildings of the university. The thing I liked the most was to hike around Stavanger. I have never done it before and it’s a great opportunity to discover this side Norway and hang out with your friends. You can also go fishing along the coast (free of charge), go to the beach at the end of summer (even swimming, it’s not that cold) and take a boat to go to the islands around Stavanger. To put it in a nutshell, this was the fastest semester of my studies, and the best ever!

NORWEGIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE PROGRAMME
Norwegian Language and Culture programme 60 ECTS
One-year programme
The aim of the programme is to provide an introduction to the Norwegian language, culture and society, and to prepare students for further studies in Norway. Over one year, students obtain the language qualifications necessary to study in Norwegian at university level. Norwegian Language and Culture is an intensive full-time programme which requires a lot of commitment and individual work. Attendance at lectures is obligatory and studies cannot be combined with full-time work. The programme commences in August. TARGET GROUP This full-time course for international students in Norwegian Language and Culture is a preparatory year for students who are applying for Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees taught in Norwegian at the University of Stavanger. Priority will be given to applicants already residing in Norway. Admission to the Norwegian Language and Culture programme does not make a student eligible for a Norwegian student visa. Therefore, only applicants residing in Norway or those who come from Schengen countries can be admitted to this study programme.
In order to achieve this, the student must: - obtain proficiency in Norwegian, both written and oral - gain insight into Norwegian language and culture - become familiar with the Norwegian higher education system. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Students are expected to fulfil the general admission requirements in order to secure admission to this programme. For more information about admission requirements and English language qualifications, visit www.uis.no/norlanguage
LEARNING OUTCOMES The overall aim is to bring the student up to the linguistic level necessary to take a degree programme in Norwegian at a university college or university in Norway.

Klaudia Tolstow, Poland - Norwegian Language and Culture Programme The University of Stavanger is a very modern one and not only students of science and technology experience this. I really appreciate the fact that almost all formalities are done through online platforms. This eliminates the bureaucracy, waiting in queues, searching for the right office, taking trips to the university just to check if the results of the exam have been published, hunting for lecture materials, etc. With regards to the style of learning, it´s pretty much different than the one I grew up in. What I really appreciate here is the focus on critical thinking. The lecturers do not expect the students to just nod their heads and take things for granted but really encourage them to ask questions.

Manish Budathoki, Nepal - Current PhD student/lecturer The reason why I chose UiS is because despite being a new university, it has been able to start up with new and trendy research. The thing that impressed me a lot here is that the faculty is very open to the research ideas of the students and is ready to take these up in the coursework and ultimately develop them into fullfledged research projects. I was working with peroxisome research during my Master’s thesis. After my Master’s degree I wished to continue my studies and UiS provided me with the opportunity to take a PhD in algal and plant molecular biology where I have been working for omega 3 enhancement in marine microalga. In a few words my life as a student at UiS can be described as exciting, career enhancing, and fun! 30
