Top 10 Wacky Commemorative Days

Lucas Brearley If you need a few tokens or excuses to take the day off from school or work, this article is worth a read. Here we have what I consider to be the Top 10 most wacky, yet surprisingly meaningful and legitimate commemorative holidays. Across the United States, National Doughnut Day (June 2) is a day devoted to celebrating doughnuts. “Typical Americans!” you might emphatically declare, but there is actually history behind this day as there are with many of these other commemorative holidays that at a first glance, don’t seem substantial enough to merit recognition. National Doughnut Day actually recognises the hard work of the Salvation Army selling doughnuts to people as a fundraiser during the Great Depression and also honours the Salvation Army ‘Lassies’ who sent doughnuts to American soldiers during World War 1. Surprisingly meaningful context behind what initially seemed like a poor excuse for a holiday, yeah?

1. January 16 Appreciate A Dragon Day Appreciate a Dragon Day encourages people to learn about their own culture and history through discovering what kind of dragon is associated with their location. Similarly, it also serves to empower people through associating a dragon to other aspects of their life such as their job, birthday or hobbies. 2. January 26 Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day Arguably, this is the best and stupidest day on the list. Certain universities have bubble wrap stands for students to collect bubble wrap and use it as a stress reliever, as we all do. It’s easy to forget the true purpose of bubble wrap, which is to ensure

4

the safety of fragile objects during transport and packaging. Bubble wrap has had many other functions before it found its true calling however, such as for greenhouse insulation. As bubble wrap is often used for things other than its main function, most people aware of this holiday choose to celebrate it in other ways, including handing out bubble wrap or filling a swimming pool with it. 3. February 13 Blame Someone Else Day Perhaps this one isn’t even a bad idea at first sight. Whenever you see a lot of finger pointing and hear a lot of lying, it’s gotta be Blame Someone Else Day! Who can we blame for starting this trend? Anne Moeller of Michigan, USA, started the trend in 1982 as an excuse for not keeping her appointments on the fateful day of Friday the 13th.

4. April 23 Talk Like Shakespeare Day This day is a great way to appreciate and remember the famous works of the great bard William Shakespeare, who was born on 23rd April, 1564. Interestingly, last year was the 400th anniversary of the bard’s death. Thou know’st ‘tis common; all that lives must die, Passing through nature to eternity. 5. April 26 Hug An Australian Day I harbour much fondness for this particular celebration; being an Australian resident however, I feel I hardly get the opportunity to lap up the special attention. The origins of this day are unknown, but it has certainly caught on over the past few years as people around the world have shown enthusiasm by sending cards or even fruit baskets to their Aussie mates. If you’re planning a trip overseas, consider heading off around April 26. 6. May 4 Respect For Chickens Day Started by United Poultry Concerns in 2005, Respect for Chickens Day is more serious than it sounds. It encourages people to raise awareness for the bleak lives of some chickens who are subjected to cruel farming operations. What could be initially thought of as a fun day to salute the best animal on earth, is actually a day that sees warm-hearted people standing on busy street corners handing out leaflets, doing radio call ins, or even hosting parties to help people understand what some poor chickens go through to deliver the eggs we take for granted. 7. July 10 Don’t Step On A Bee Day Sounds like a warning eh? A friendly reminder that bee stings hurt and to watch out for them? That’s what I thought. The most dangerous bees are the ones lying dead on the ground with their stinger in the air waiting to be stepped on! But this day actually serves to alert people to the fact that the bee populations in some countries have halved for no apparent reason. On July 10, please remember to not step on bees; we need all the bees we have left.

element of life. Be Late For Something Day is aimed at reducing stress and raising awareness of the contribution of schedules to poor mental health. 9. November 18 Married To A Scorpio Support Day November 18 is National Married To A Scorpio Support Day. Scorpios are known for being wonderful and caring people, but there’s also a reason the adjective ‘intense’ is frequently applied to their personality descriptions. It’s probably the same reason that there’s a day of support for the people who choose to marry them. 10. November 30 Stay At Home Because You’re Well Day Kind of sucks how you need to be sick to get out of doing stuff; I know right? This holiday promotes honesty and encourages people to let their employers know when things are getting hectic and tiresome and it’s just time for a day away from the stress. One can use this day to sit back and enjoy a day of life, or it can be an opportunity for an employer to assess the workload of those who work for them. There you have it- 10 holidays that seem a little questionable but turn out to have plenty of meaning behind them. Spread the word of these commemorative days and perhaps they will come to be recognised as important calendar dates… or more importantly, valid reasons to stay home!

8. September 5 Be Late For Something Day I’m very passionate about this day. In fact I celebrate September 5th every day of the year. Be Late For Something Day was established by the Procrastinators’ Club of America to tell us that once in a while, it’s ok to not be punctual and that just taking it easy from time to time is an essential

Top 10 Conspiracy Theories By Elise Williams In no particular order, these are some of the most interesting conspiracy theories I have come across. These are purely speculative; some have more to them than meets the eye however. 1. Illuminati/New World Order The Illuminati is said to be a secret society of global elites that want a totalitarian world government, one religion, and control of all economies. It is believed they brainwash the masses, as they are in control of the press, education, and have members in political power all over the world. Their symbol is the all-seeing eye. They allegedly have control over most banks and are said to have caused global crises from the Great Depression on. It is also suggested that they have influenced the decision around having one European currency. The Illuminati are mentioned in many conspiracy theories as they are linked to some of the most influential people in the world. 2. Bush Did 9/11 This conspiracy suggests that 9/11 was an inside job, planned by the Bush government in order to join the Iraq war and take their oil. It is said that explosives were planted inside the building in advance. Experts in their field,

6

such as physicist Stephen E. Jones, argue that the impact of the planes would not have been enough to cause such a collapse, especially at the speed that the buildings crumbled. It has also been stated that such structural damage is impossible, as jet fuel is not hot enough to melt steel beams. Some reports stated that the melting of the steel beams is what caused the collapse, hence this belief. 3. Avril Lavigne’s Double When Avril Lavigne’s fame rose, she hired a double to stop getting attacked by paparazzi; her name was Melissa Vandella. Unfortunately, after the release of Lavigne’s first album, her grandfather passed away which forced her into a spiral of depression. As a result, she took her own life. As she was at the height of her career, the record label forced Vandella to keep up appearances by pretending to be the star. The change of her style in songs, several awkward interview encounters, and a change in some

of her features are just some of the things that support this conspiracy theory. 4. Moon Landings Are Faked For years, conspiracy theorists have been claiming that the moon landings (1969-1972) have been faked. Here is the ‘evidence’ from the filming of the first steps on the moon to support this: ∙ There are no stars in the video ∙ The American flag is fluttering slightly but there is no breeze on the moon ∙ The shadows don’t match up, so there is obviously more than the light from the sun ∙ There is a rock with a perfectly carved ‘C’ in it, which NASA has later claimed was a stray human hair. How would the hair even get there? The photos that were supposedly taken from different explored areas are identical; could this be a duplication of sets because NASA were getting lazy?

5. Paul Is Dead Death rumours regarding Paul McCartney of the Beatles began to circulate in 1969, with claims he was replaced by look-alike contest winner William Campbell. Many song lyrics can be found within the Beatles’ recording that link to his death after he had a car accident. The Abbey Road album had artwork on the cover that looked almost like a funeral, and when their song Revolution 9 is played backwards, the words “turn me on, dead man” can be heard. 6. The Titanic Never Sunk This theory proposes that the Titanic was swapped with its sister ship, the Olympic, as part of an insurance scam. The Olympic was launched a year earlier than the Titanic, and it suffered two crashes, the second causing irreversible structural damage. Repairs would have cost millions of pounds, so it is said that the owner swapped the ships, and staged the accident, allowing the Titanic to carry on in place of the Olympic. The ships were almost identical; only a few name plates needed to be switched. 7. Harold Holt Was Murdered Contrary to widespread belief, Harold Holt may not have drowned mysteriously when he went for a swim in 1967. One theory suggests that he was murdered due to his opposition of American bases being built on Australian soil. Pine Gap is a United States Satellite Relay Station known for tracking UFO activity and hiring CIA members. Harold Holt stopped Pine Gap being built; after his death there were no more obstacles however, and its construction went ahead. 8. Barack Obama Is A Hologram In December 2015, President Obama gave a speech, where he stood in the Oval Office. It appears that this was shot in front of a green screen. After researching this further, it became clear that in almost all of his speeches since mid-2014 he is standing in front of a green screen. This has never happened with any other presidents. The theory is that Barack Obama didn’t agree with government members (who are

part of the Illuminati) so they had him taken care of, and created a hologram. Hologram technology has come far enough that a hologram could look like a real person, as shown at events by people like Michael Jackson. Even though this theory is intriguing, it needs to be debunked. President Obama has made speeches since then where he has touched other people, and has obviously met many people in real life; he is most likely not a hologram. 9. Solange Is Beyonce’s Daughter Beyonce always says she was born in 1981; statements made by her father and Gabrielle Union however, have led people to believe she was actually born in 1974. An explanation published by a friend of Beyonce’s cousin have led many to believe that she got pregnant when she was only 12 or 13, and her religious parents covered it up, claiming that Solange was their daughter. Could this also explain the fight Solange got into with Jay Z? It seems a lot more likely she would be fighting with her step-father than with her brother-in-law. 10. The Shakespeare Authorship Question This theory suggests that William Shakespeare did not write his own plays and claims they were written by someone else who did not want to accept public credit. Firstly, Shakespeare was uneducated and from an illiterate household, hardly a sign of someone with such poetic eminence and such a large vocabulary. There is also no evidence that identifies him as a writer. His name was misspelled in many different ways on documents, and nothing has ever proven him as having written plays.

Top 10 Lost Treasures

Zheirraly Bondad

When we think of lost treasures, many people think of pirates and buried treasure that we’ve seen in movies, heard from stories, or even played in video games. But there are many different types of treasures that actually exist, still waiting to be uncovered. So if you want to get rich without having to work, here are some treasures that could get you there (Although a couple on the list have already been uncovered; sorry!).

1

The Amber Room

The Amber Room was designed by the architect Andreas Schuter and created by Gottfried Wolfram at the Charlotteburg Palace in Prussia from 1701 to 1709. It was a gift to Peter the Great, the Russian Czar, by King Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia in 1716. The room was layered with panels made of amber and filled with gold fittings, gold leaf, ornate mirrors decorated with amber and gold, jewels and more gems. It was transported to the Winter Palace in St. Petersbug but was then dismantled and moved to the Catherine Palace where more amber fittings were added to accommodate the bigger space and there it stayed for more than two centuries. It was dismantled and stolen by German soldiers in 1941 despite efforts of trying to conceal the room such as covering it with wallpaper. The room was then packed into 27 crates and was taken to Königsberg, Germany near the Baltic Coast. It was displayed on the Königsberg’s castle until 1943 when the museum was destroyed by bombs, resulting in the disappearance of the Amber Room. There have been many theories as to where the Amber Room may be or how it was lost, the most common being that it was destroyed with the museum. Others believe that it was yet again dismantled and taken somewhere else. The more extreme theories include that Stalin had the original Amber Room and that the Germans stole a fake one. To this day, the Amber Room remains lost but there is a reconstructed replica of the Amber Room that was completed in Russia and was dedicated to the Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroederon. It was opened in 2003 in Tsarskoye Selo State Museum Reserve outside of St. Petersburg where it is open for the public. There’s a reconstruction of the Amber Room currently on display at Catherine Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia. The original Amber Room is estimated to value around $170 million and was considered by some to be the eighth wonder of the world.

Flor do Mar

The Flor do Mar was a 400 ton Portuguese carack that was built in Libson in 1502. The naval history of the ship was already impressive as it was involved in many historical events such as the capture of Malacca and can alone be a great treasure. The ship is said to contain vast amounts of treasure, including gold goblets, silver plates and extensive gold bullion, as well as tributes from King Siam. On its way home to Portugal with Alfonso de Albuquerque as captain, the ship, along with four others was caught in a storm in the Straits of Malacca and was

shipwrecked on the reefs of Sumatra on November 20th, 1511. Although Alfonso was saved, the treasures were lost at sea. Due to the inaccuracy of maps during those times, the exact location of the shipwreck is unclear. An estimated $2.6 billion worth of treasure was lost, making it the most sought after shipwreck in history. 3

The Fabergé Eggs

Fabergé eggs were luxurious well-crafted eggs made of jewels and gems created by Peter Carl Fabergé. The first Fabergé egg, the Hen Egg, was given to Tsar Alexander III of Romanov who gave it to his wife, the Empress Maria in 1885. For the next 33 years, a total of 50 eggs were made for the Russian Royal Family. The Russian Revolution of 1917 overthrew Tsar Nicholas II, which led to Fabergé fleeing Russia for Switzerland. The Royal’s treasures were seized and among them were the Fabergé eggs. They were moved and stored in the vaults of the Kremlin Armoury but along the way, 8 of the eggs went missing. Some of the missing Fabergé eggs include the Hen Egg with Sapphire Pendant which was made in 1886, the Egg with Alexander III Portraits made in 1896, the Mauve Egg made in 1897, and the Royal Danish Egg made in 1903. Just one of these eggs would be worth around $90-150 million. The Fabergé eggs are also known as the Imperial eggs because most of them were given to the Russian Tsars.

4

King John’s Treasure

The story of King John and his lost treasure has been passed down for 700 years. King John I was not a popular ruler. He inherited his crown from his brother, but in 1216, his power diminished and he lost his lands to the French King. He was forced to sign the Magna Carta which further reduced his power. King John had a fondness for stealing and collecting jewellery, gold and coins for himself and his followers. In the same year he signed the Magna Carta, he decided to visit Bishops Lynn and Norfolk in October. During his visit, however, he fell sick and decided to head back to Lincolnshire where he would be safer. The King took the safer and slower route through Wisbech while his luggage, including the treasures, took the route that would cross the Wash, a bay in Lincolnshire full of marshes and dangerous flats. It was only possible to cross the Wash during low tide but the cart baggage train was too slow and was unable to miss the high tide. The treasure, which consisted of gold goblets and coins, silver plates, the sword of Tristram and the Crown Jewel, were estimated to value around $70 million. The treasures have not been found.

5

The Copper Scroll

In 1952, a pair of copper scrolls was found within the same Jordanian caves in which the Dead Sea scrolls were found in 1946. These scrolls were revealed to be two separate pieces of one large scroll, containing details of 64 locations of gold treasures. The instructions were mostly written in ancient Hebrew with some Greek words and are believed to have been created between 110 BC and 30 BC. Many of the descriptions were written as if they were to be read by someone who was familiar with the area. We are unfamiliar with the language used, ancient Hebrew, and we only know it from religious texts which means that the Copper Scroll contains words that haven’t been seen before. Consequently, along with the Greek words, some translations were like this: “Item 32: In the cave that is next to (something) and belonging to the House of Hakkoz, gig six cubits. Within are six ingots of gold.” Another example is: “In the funeral shrine, in the 3rd row of stones: One hundred gold ingots.”Overall, the value of all the treasures is estimated to be around $1.2 billion. These vague instructions as well as the language used has kept this treasure hidden for over two thousand years. 6

The Treasure of the Knights Templar

The Knights Templar were a religious military order formed in 1119 AD to protect Christian pilgrims on their journey to holy lands of the Middle East. After a couple of decades, they became the wealthiest and most powerful military order in Europe. For two centuries, they gathered property (land), castles, gold, jewels and many other treasures. Although wealthy, they were unpopular with many people, especially those who owed them money, and among them was the King of France, Philip VI. On October 1307, with permission from the Pope, Philip VI ordered an arrest of the Knights Templar. Legend says that the remaining Templars who managed to escape took their treasures and travelled to Scotland before eventually finding their way to Nova Scotia, Canada. There are rumours of a money pit found in Oak Island where many believe the Templars hid their treasures among many booby traps. The Money Pit was excavated for years but the treasures, which include gold and silver ingots, jewels, land deeds, religious relics, weapons and many more, remain hidden. The disappearance of the Knights who escaped is also a mystery. Thousands of men as well as fleets of ships disappeared. 7

The Treasure of Lima

The city of Lima, Peru was controlled by the Spanish. In 1820 however, they started to lose control over the city and in an attempt to protect the city’s treasures of gold, jewels, and other riches, it was decided that they were to be shipped to Mexico. Along the way, Captain William Thompson (who was put in charge of bringing the treasures to Mexico) and his crew chose to take the treasures instead and bury them on Cocos Island, near Costa Rica. The crew were eventually captured by a Spanish warship and were executed for piracy, except for Captain Thompson and his first mate, who promised to show the Spanish where the treasure was hidden. They managed to escape but were never seen again. The location of the treasures worth over $40 million is unknown.

8

Forrest Fenn’s Treasure

Forrest Fenn, art collector and author, was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 1988; doctors told him he had a year left to live. During his illness, he decided to gather fortunes including gold nuggets, collector’s coins, jewellery, gems, and a jar containing his autobiography, worth more than $1 million, and put them in a bronze chest, which itself was worth $25,000. He originally planned to hide his treasure, his legacy, somewhere in the wilderness before his death, but things did not go as planned as he survived the illness. He instead waited until he was 80 years old to hide his treasure. Fenn wrote a poem containing 9 clues to the treasure, published it on his website and invited everybody to hunt for the treasure, including his family. He then wrote a memoir, The Thrill of the Chase in 2010, which may contain additional hints to where the treasure chest lies. Fenn continues to reveal clues such as in March 2013 when he revealed that the treasure lies in the Rocky Mountains, north of Santa Fe. Many have wondered however, if the treasure chest truly exists.

10

The Patiala Necklace

In 1928, the Patiala Necklace was designed by the House of Cartier as a gift to the Maharaja Sir Bhupinder Singh of Patiala. It was a rare and impressive piece of jewellery which contained 2,930 diamonds including expensive gems such as the 7th largest diamond in the world and Burmese rubies. Maharaja Sir Bhupinder Singh’s son, Maharaja Yadavindra, was the last known person to wear the necklace when it was lost in 1948. The necklace itself was found in 1998 and was purchased by Cartier. The necklace was missing many jewels including many Burmese rubies and its centre piece, the DeBeers diamond. While Cartier tried to replace the missing pieces with sapphires and topaz, it lacked the light refraction of the original jewels, so it was decided that synthetic stones were to be used instead. In its original form, the necklace is believed to be worth over $20 million.

The City of Paititi

The lost city of Paititi, the city of gold, is surrounded by many legends. It is believed to be the place where Ancient Incas had hidden their treasures of gold from Europeans. Paititi is identical to El Dorado because of its location and ambiguity and they are sometimes mixed up. The story of the lost city of Paititi, in short, is that after forty years of war against the Spanish, the Incas of Peru retreated to Vilcabamba Valley to hold off invaders until 1572 when the Spanish conquered the Incas but found the city to be deserted. The Incas seemed to have moved to the rainforests of southern Brazil, taking with them their treasures. Due to the treasures not being found, it was eventually believed to be a myth. In 2009, satellite photos of deforested areas in Brazil revealed that there may have once been vast settlements. This showed that

TOP 10 LIFE HACKS Emma Nahal

Hack #1 If you have ever made microwave popcorn at home you’ll know the struggle of leftover kernels at the bottom of the bag. A way to minimise this is to spread them out before you start microwaving and that way more of the kernels will pop!

Hack #2

Fold your clothes and stack them vertically, so that instead of picking up each item, you can get a peek at all of the clothes in your drawer without having to pull through every single one of them and ending up with a really messy drawer that you probably won’t end up fixing for quite a while! This is a good way to give your dresser better visibility and keep it more organised.

Hack #3

Have you ever wished you had something to keep your chip bag closed? Yes? Well, you can use the clips from a clothes hanger to create your very own chip clip! Just cut off the clips from the hanger and there you have it! Hangers now have more than one use.

Hack #4

Want more volume when listening to music through your phone? Simply put it into a cup to create an amplifier for your phone! I can definitely guarantee that your music will be five times louder (I may or may not be exaggerating)!

Hack #6

Have you ever been in a situation where you needed to flip a coin but didn’t have one? Siri has got you covered! Simply ask Siri to ‘flip a coin’ when you need a coin toss to make a decision for you, or ‘roll the dice’ if you’re playing a turn based game.

Hack #7

Almost finished your jar of Nutella? End it with ice cream! `

Hack #8

Ever find that you’re wasting too much strawberry when cutting the stem off? To easily remove the stem from strawberries, insert a straw into the bottom of the berry and push through the middle of the fruit and out the top. The stem will come off easily. Enjoy!

Hack #9

Put your straw through the tab on a can of drink to keep it from rising out of your drink. Very useful!

Hack #10

Ever wanted to turn your lipstick matte? It’s possible! Simply get some translucent powder and dab onto your lips to get the desired effect! I love using this hack; it’s one of my favourites!

Hack #5

Put your phone on aeroplane mode to remove advertisements from your apps and games! You can now use your favorite apps and play your favourite games for hours on end without having to worry about accidentally clicking on dodgy looking advertisements.

TOP 10 COLDPLAY SONGS JAYDEN O’HALLORAN

One of the biggest rock bands in the world, Coldplay has been together for almost 20 years and has released seven studio albums. The line up has been stable for the entire time, with the four members being vocalist and pianist Chris Martin, lead guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman and drummer Will Champion. Here are ten of their best songs. Apologies in advance if one of your favourites was missing; it was very hard to pick just ten songs out of the many brilliant tracks Coldplay has produced.

9: God Put A Smile Upon Your Face The fourth and final single off the monstrously successful A Rush of Blood to the Head, definitely an underrated song and one that has gotten better with age. The acoustic guitar and hushed vocals contrast with the roar of the electric guitars and soaring vocals in the chorus. It didn’t make a massive dent on the charts like the previous singles from the album but it remains a firm favourite.

10: Don’t Panic Originally called ‘Panic’, it has been recorded twice, once for The Blue Room EP in 1999 and their debut album Parachutes, in which it was the

the Billboard Hot 100, becoming their first song to crack the top ten. Coldplay are now reluctant to play this song live as Martin declared in 2011 that they never got the recording right, but I disagree. 6: Talk The 3rd single from their album X&Y, ‘Talk’ relies heavily on a sample of the song ‘Computer Love’ by pioneering German electronic band Kraftwerk. Coldplay do not play this song live anymore as Guy Berryman now dislikes it, but it is extremely underrated. ‘Talk’ went Top 10 in the UK and Top 20 in Australia but barely made a dent in the US, only charting at number 86.

3: Viva La Vida Coldplay’s biggest hit, ‘Viva la Vida’ is atypical as the guitar or piano is not the dominant instrument. Instead, a string section and a steady bass drumbeat along with Martin’s vocals dominate it. Lyrically, it contains many Biblical and historical references and garnered mass appeal and critical acclaim, becoming their first #1 song in the US and catapulting Coldplay into another stratosphere. 2: The Scientist So we go from a production heavy song to the complete opposite. The song is a piano driven ballad about a man’s powerlessness against love and received critical acclaim, being praised for the production and Martin’s falsetto towards the end of the song. The video also attracted attention for its unique reverse narrative style, winning numerous MTV Video Music Awards as well as being nominated for a Grammy for ‘Best Short Form Music Video’. 1: Clocks Although ‘Viva La Vida’ and ‘The Scientist’ make fair cases for number one, ‘Clocks’ is one of those absolutely timeless songs. It is very minimalist in sound and production, with the piano riff at the start remaining Coldplay’s signature sound. Although it didn’t get the chart kudos it deserved,

5: Yellow Although ‘Shiver’ was the lead single off

it won a Grammy for Record of the Year in 2003 and has been a permanent fixture at Coldplay concerts.

Parachutes, ‘Yellow’ would prove to be Coldplay’s breakthrough. The song’s lyrics referenced unrequited love, along with the changes in dynamic from soft acoustic guitar to a loud full band. ‘Yellow’ would later be considered the centrepiece of the album. It is also a staple of

TOP TEN MOST 10. SUBWAY SURFERS At some point in our lives we were addicted to this game, dodging side to side through train tracks. We would narrate our movements and critique our decisions. Subway Surfers is definitely a great app, often receiving five stars in reviews. What has kept the game so popular is its recent innovation with the ‘world tour’ theme, where characters surf through subways around the world, collecting tokens as they go.

Tornado Jetpack’, one of my personal favourite jetpacks.

8. FLAPPY BIRD Flappy Bird ranked at the top of the app store’s charts for an extensive period of time. The most addictive part of Flappy Bird was its difficulty. The best part about the app was bragging about your high score to your friends! Unfortunately, Flappy Bird was removed from the app store by the developer. It is unclear why this happened. The owner stated “I cannot take this anymore” and within 22 hours of this statement, Flappy Bird was removed from the app store forever.

9. JETPACK JOYRIDE This game is one of my personal favourites. Jetpack Joyride has been maintaining its popularity with recent updates, introducing new and eyecatching effects. Jetpack Joyride is based on its player making cautious moves throughout a long tunnel of obstacles. Jetpack Joyride has many interesting effects in its gameplay including the ‘

5. MINECRAFT POCKET EDITION

7. TEMPLE RUN I don’t think that I have ever met a person who has not played Temple Run. Temple Run is a very basic running game, but with some interesting visuals. This game almost resembles an Indiana Jones adventure, as the plot revolves around an archaeologist being chased through

obstacles by odd monkeys, after stealing a precious and delicate artifact. Temple Run was very addictive as its path of obstacles would always change, and as the challenge progressed, new obstacles and visuals would be introduced.

I do not think that anyone can deny that at least once in their life they were addicted to this game! Minecraft has been a very popular game for many years, receiving awards, being covered in news articles and earning a place in pop culture. So much money has been made out of this game that the wealth gained from it truly reflects how humans can become attached to things easily. Minecraft zooms in and off the number one spot on the app store’s top lists; it’s always a popular app.

6. .IO FRANCHISE The .io franchise is a series of games ending with ‘.io’. The franchise is based around different creatures or machines that compete in destroying each other and becoming bigger and more powerful than other competitors. The first game of the franchise Agar.io was based on small cells consuming each other. Over time, its popularity increased; developers decided to create more games in the series. Some of the other games in the franchise are slither.io and tank.io, also popular and highly addictive apps.

4. ANGRY BIRDS No matter your age, you were likely addicted to Angry Birds and attempted to get up to that final level. Angry Birds is an app that will go down in history, not only for how popular and addictive it was, but also for how different and creative it was. This incredible game was unique to any other games of its era. This

a leader board marking their skill? I don’t think this app will ever lose its popularity. Clash of Clans just kept buzzing around the top of the app store charts, never losing the admiration of the people. The app was so popular that spin off games were made, such as Clash Royale which became just as addictive. 2. CANDY CRUSH

3. CLASH OF CLANS Prepare to be surprised, as I have never played Clash of Clans in my life. Never. This game has become so addictive and popular; I’m sure almost every teenager’s app store contains Clash of Clans in their purchased list. 1. POKEMON GO

hero-cta.4fd6713be829.png

An instant hit, Pokemon Go raced to the top of the charts just hours after its release, due to being downloaded by thousands of people. The app was so popular; swarms of people were blocking entire highways trying to ‘catch’ rare Pokemon characters. People even received fines for trying to catch Pokemon while driving! Pokemon Go will easily go down in history with all the apps listed above. The app encouraged physical fitness for everyone, as it inspired consumers to get out and about, interacting with their real world environment to play the game. Not only was it popular, it was one of the most creative apps ever made.

Top 10 Ancient Myths

Jack Crowe 10. Vlad The Vampire Commonly known as ‘Vlad the Impaler’, a Romanian medieval prince thought to be a descendant of Count Dracula himself. Why was this? This was due to Vlad’s odd and somewhat frightening thirst for blood. Vlad received his name from his reputation for viciously torturing his enemies. After torturing his victims, it was rumoured that he dipped his bread in their blood and ate it. Yuck! This is one of the reasons that he is known as a descendant of Dracula. Blood is not exactly a favourable beverage on Earth. Vlad is also a common character that shows up in many other myths about vampires. 9. Fire-breathing Dragons Dragons are very well-known mythical creatures. They have been spread among popular culture, and characterised in games. Throughout our history, dragons have taken many different forms. It was believed by our ancestors that dragons were crocodiles, alligators, goannas and dinosaurs. This would have been due to their ferocious and scaly appearance and variety of colours. According to some, sightings of dragons still occur today, but do they really exist? 8. The Lost City Of Atlantis We are all familiar with the Lost City of Atlantis. But the most fascinating part of this underwater city is its backstory. Atlantis is said to be located at the ‘Pillars of Hercules,’ by an ancient writer named Plato, who mentioned the city in his narratives ‘Timaeus’ and ‘Critias’. His stories revolved around Atlantis conducting a war against Athens. Unfortunately when Athens had defeated Atlantis, the vanquished city sunk to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Although its existence has not been confirmed, many stories have developed a plot around this mysterious island. Coincidence? I think not! 7. The Intelligent Sisyphus Sisyphus was a mythical man in the medieval period. He is known for his wits and courage that he possessed

20

throughout his life to accomplish incredible challenges. Sisyphus was the King and founder of Corinth. But he was not just a King. He possessed the ability to speak to the gods. He used this to his advantage, tricking gods to give his citizens fresh and pure water from the sky after drought. When Hades had come to take Sisyphus to the underworld after death, he tricked Hades and trapped him in his own wardrobe! This meant that no one could die, no matter what they encountered. Eventually Hades broke free and took Sisyphus to the underworld, punishing him by damning him to roll a boulder up a steep mountain for all eternity. 6. The Treasure Thief With two brothers possessing knowledge of a secret entrance to a chamber of treasures inside a king’s palace, they decided to break into it and become wealthy men. They were succeeding until one of them got caught in a trap. The other brother had to leave him behind as the trap was closing in. The following morning, the king was bewildered by his discovery in the chamber. He placed the dead body of the brother on a wall in the community, and ordered someone to step forth and bury his thieving partner. The thieves’ mother knew of this, and ordered the surviving brother to collect the body to bury the lost brother. He did as he was told and tricked the guards, stealing the body. A few days later, he was in the village when he saw the princess of the palace, seeking a prince for herself. He approached her and she asked him about the most daring thing he’d done, as she desired a husband who wanted to take risks occasionally. He told her about the heist. The father (the king) found out about this, but rewarded the man for his great trickery. The man and the princess inherited the throne. 5. Osiris Osiris was not only a king, but also a god. He had won the favour of his citizens and vowed to bring peace to Egypt, which he did. His brother had plotted his death however, trapping him in a chest with trickery. His brother became the King of Egypt. Osiris’ wife, Isis, was depressed at his demise. She wanted to recover his spirit and set him free.

She embarked upon a journey to find her husband with the assistance of her son Horus, who was but a few months old. With additional assistance from an angel, she found Osiris’ body and soul, and they were reunited once more. Egypt was not the same without Osiris however. Wars were raging and famine was destroying society. Osiris trained Horus as he grew into manhood. Horus snuck into the palace and fought many soldiers, killing his evil uncle, returning his father to the throne to rule again.

morning, he repeated his routine and then left, while Odysseus devised a plan to sharpen the end of a tree trunk and stab it into the eye of the cyclops once it fell asleep. The only problem was getting him to sleep without losing any more lives, so the crew decided to offer the cyclops Odysseus’ wine. Odysseus struck the sleeping giant and in the morning, the blind cyclops left the cave, allowing Odysseus and his men to escape and return to Greece.

4. The Land Of The Dead, Duat ‘Duat’ was a term used in Ancient Egypt, referring to the Underworld. Egyptians believed that when a spirit leaves the earth, it enters the realm of Duat. However, the Egyptians did not see this as the end of life; it was merely the next stage of life. Although this place seems like the Ancient Egyptians’ view of heaven, it was believed to contain lakes of fire. Duat has had many great myths related to it, one of the most common being about a man and a woman travelling to it and coming back to inform the rest of Egypt of their experiences.

3. Re, The Creator Of All Gods According to mythology, Re was the first god and the creator of all of the other gods of Ancient Egypt. Re has been a common character in films and novels; he has alternatively been referred to as the sun god. Re ruled Egypt before Osiris, the great king mentioned above. Re was so powerful that he was able to create a portal to Duat and also travel between realms. Every day, in order to live, he had to venture to Duat to defeat a snake named Apopis. Apopis would be resurrected every day as well; if Re did not succeed in his battle, he would no longer live to see the shining daylight. 2. Odysseus And The Cyclops Odysseus was a Greek hero. A courageous leader, he devised a plan to slay a cyclops! Mythology states that Odysseus and his soldiers were sailing until they stumbled upon an uncharted island, inhabited by a fierce cyclops, a huge one-eyed giant. After exploring the island, they ended up in a cave. Little did they know the cave was the home of the vicious cyclops! The cyclops created small earthquakes with his footsteps and threw a boulder at the cave entrance to trap the men. Two of them were eaten in a single bite and then the cyclops fell asleep. 1. Red Slippers This myth from ancient Egypt is an original Cinderella story, perhaps where the Brothers Grimm had found their inspiration. The story begins with a Greek girl named Rhodopis, who grew up as a little girl on an island where a rich and greedy man made his home, and used her and some others as his personal slaves. But when she grew up, he sold her to make money, and a wealthy, but kind man took her in. Not for cruel slavery, but as family. He loved her like a daughter and one day gave a gift to Rhodopis, little red slipers. She said that she loved them so much that she would never wear a different shoe again. One day however, while she was barefoot, an eagle swooped down and took one of her precious slippers and flew off and away… to a prince’s castle. This prince ordered every maiden to fit the shoe on, and when they reached the home of Rhodopis, the prince took her for their marriage. The kind and wealthy man was disappointed, but was happy for her, as the prince and Rhodopis lived happily ever after.

Top 10 Unpredictably Dangerous Jobs

Lucas Brearley The concept of a 9 to 5 job that makes us dread Mondays and love Fridays is something that most of us take for granted right throughout our lives. The list of complaints from employees from hundreds of different industries and fields seems endless. You might have the most annoying co-workers, or the lowest pay, longest hours, or a boss with ridiculously unrealistic expectations, but after a bit of enlightenment from this article you’ll be rocking up for work with a sigh of relief at least for the next few days as you reflect on these unpredictably dangerous jobs (listed in no particular order), with risk levels you have probably never considered!

1. Heavy Transport Drivers You know those guys who drive those massive trucks that block out the sun? It’s their job to make sure that goods get from A to B in restricted amounts of time so that the groceries we need are there for purchase. It is a dangerous job that requires a special licence. So dangerous that approximately 22 out of every 100,000 workers unfortunately pay the ultimate price. These heavy vehicles can be incredibly difficult to control, and drivers often have to manoeuvre through some of the most difficult roads imaginable. Not to mention the fact that they often must travel through remote areas, far from help in the event of a disaster, and also during dreadful weather and in the middle of the night. You might want to think twice if you thought it would be relaxing to make a career out of leisurely drives through the countryside.

2. Line Installers and Repairers Only called on after storms and fierce winds have destroyed the power lines that allow us to live in luxury, these men and women ascend to great heights to trifle with the deadly flow of electricity in damaged power lines and power poles. The risks involved in this line of work (pun intended) are self-explanatory, which leaves them with the shocking death chance of approximately 23 out of every 100,000 workers. 3. Hazardous Material Workers These guys are tasked with clearing hazardous objects or substances from places such as laboratories, factories or plants. As simple as it may sound, this job sends 47 out of every 100,000 workers to their deaths due to deadly explosions or infections at the workplace. Additionally,

they also risk blindness, skin irritation or disfiguring burns caused by corrosive chemical products; nothing our favourite nuclear safety inspector Homer Simpson can’t handle I’m sure! 4. Mountain Guides Adventure, action, scenery and the achievement of what most could only call a dream, on a regular basis is just day to day life for mountain guides. As glamorous as this job may seem however, mountain guides face dangers that take lives every year. Even the most skilled and experienced climbers can meet an early end by stepping in the wrong place at the wrong time. Mountain guides are tasked with preparing for life threatening factors as they cater to the needs of adrenaline junkie travellers such as unpredictable and extreme weather, rationing the supply of limited oxygen, and navigation. Deadly factors include being frozen to death in a storm due to an inaccurate weather forecast or simply, a poor judgement call. 5. Stunt Actors The variety of threats posed to stunt doubles is as varied as each movie. As actors assigned to a main role in any film or series are considered irreplaceable, risking their safety by having them perform dangerous stunts is not worth jeopardising the production. This is where stunt doubles come in. Stunt actors are the people we see in car chases, gunfights and explosions on the screen. These daring and athletic professionals risk sustaining injuries from vehicle crashes, gunshot wounds, falls, cuts and burns…all for our entertainment. 6. Astronauts Interestingly enough, astronauts make the list despite the fact that there have been only 34 deaths on the job throughout history. This is because there have only been 430 astronauts ever to leave the planet, leaving us with a 7.5% mortality rate. Perhaps this number will rise once we reach the age of interplanetary warfare. 7. Deep Sea Fisherman Perhaps as surprising as astronauts, deep sea fishermen face severe enough trials and threats to make it to the list. Risks of mishaps are high; losing your finger in machinery or being brutally crushed to death by heavy fishing equipment is not unusual. If they are not killed by such hazardous factors, 116 out of every 100,000 fishermen lose their lives every year as victims of drowning, storms, getting lost, contracting severe illnesses or developing mental health issues due to spending months upon months in isolation.

8. Sulphur Miners Mining usually makes it to any list of dangerous jobs. But why stop there. Let’s look at the most dangerous mining job specifically; sulphur mining. Fortunately, this job is not available to most people. The sulphur is extracted from the active Ljen volcano in Indonesia, so employees are mostly residents of Java. You won’t be too disappointed though. Paid no more than $10 per day (not per hour, per DAY) sulphur miners risk death by gas poisoning and burns. What’s more, they are given as little as a paper mask for protection! It’s no wonder that more than 70 miners have died over the past 40 years in this profession. 9. Target Assistants If you were to guess what the most dangerous circus job was, you’d probably assume lion tamer or something of the sort. Well you’d be forgetting about target assistants, more brutally known as impalement artists. These are the people who stand against a nicely lacquered wooden board and have knives thrown or arrows shot at them. As if that isn’t risky enough, circus directors sometimes like to put the assistants on a rotating wheel, or light an arrow on fire. Worst of all, if an accident occurs, it is their job to pretend it was all intended! 10. Correctional Officers The list wouldn’t be complete without the job with the most injuries and illnesses in State Government. Correctional officers, more commonly known as security guards, face assault and suffer indignities from prisoners. It is their role to maintain the safety and wellbeing of each individual prisoner which often means putting themselves in the middle of a fight or riot, standing toe to toe against a violent inmate or even being kidnapped and held in a cell during lockdown. Correctional officers also face mental health issues as a result of their workplace effectively being a dysfunctional society full of ill tempered, violent and unbalanced men and women.
