ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS

Teaching

The Faculty of Economic and Business is the first and only faculty in Spain (public or private and for any discipline) to be awarded the Certificate for Quality in Internationalization (CeQUINT). Granted in 2015 by a consortium of 14 European accreditation agencies, this certificate recognizes the incorporation of an international dimension into higher education. Over 67% of the Faculty’s courses are taught in English and its students have a markedly international profile (with exchange students from 70 countries). The Faculty also attracts the best students from Catalonia and beyond, according to the admission grades. For instance, the lowest mark of the students admitted to the bachelor’s degree in International Business Economics (IBE), a programme taught entirely in English, last year was a 12.084 (out of 14). Mention should likewise be made of the new bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technologies and Economic Analysis (to be launched in the 2018-2019 academic year, in coordination with UPC). The programme, which will be taught entirely in English, will combine industrial engineering subjects with the fundamentals of economics.

Research

Since UPF’s founding in 1990, the Department has evolved into a leading centre for research and teaching. It ranks among the most outstanding departments in Europe (see the Section 4 below) and brings together an international community of more than 20 different nationalities. Intellectual life in the Department is centred on a variety of weekly research seminars in the Department’s areas of research. In addition, the Department hosts a large number of visiting scholars and lecturers. As a result, students and teaching staff are exposed to a continuous flow of new researchers working at the frontiers of knowledge in their fields. Finally, with the financial backing of the Catalan government, the Department, together with the Institute for Economic Analysis (IAECSIC) and the Department of Economics at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), created the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics (Barcelona GSE), ranked among the top 8 international research centres in Spain (Severo Ochoa accreditation).

The bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Administration provides students with the necessary knowledge of economics and skills to manage the different areas (finance, sales, human resources, etc.) of a business, from multinationals to SMEs.

The bachelor’s degree in Economics provides theoretical and practical knowledge to enable accurate analysis of the economic situation.

The bachelor’s degree in International Business Economics is designed to produce graduates with a special ability to interrelate content, methods and perspectives regarding the complexity of business and economics in a multicultural context.

The interuniversity bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics approaches social sciences from a variety of angles, giving students the tools they need to analyse today’s increasingly global, complex and connected world. Students follow the programme at three universities: UPF (Barcelona), UC3 (Madrid) and UAM (Madrid). Study abroad is encouraged.

The bachelor’s degree in Business Sciences provides quality training that enables graduates to swiftly find employment.

The bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technologies and Economic Analysis (a joint programme with UPC to begin in 2018-2019) is taught entirely in English. It combines industrial engineering subjects with the fundamentals of economics in order to provide the high-level interdisciplinary training needed to produce new industrial leaders with both a thorough understanding of innovation and technology and detailed knowledge of economics.

With the double bachelor’s degree in Law and Business Management and Administration or Economics students can earn a bachelor’s degree in Law and a second bachelor’s degree in either Business Management and Administration or Economics over a period of five years and one term.

Postgraduate education is organized in two tracks. The PhD track, consisting of the research master’s (MRes) and PhD programmes, aims to train scholars for careers in either academia or business or government. The master’s track consists of more applied programmes that are less oriented towards careers in academia and offer four different paths (Economics, Finance, Management, and Finance and Banking).
