Key figures

The Engineering School initiated its activities in 1999, with the launch of an undergraduate degree in Computer Science at UPF. Since then, the School has grown, offering new programmes in Telecommunications Network, Audiovisual Systems, Biomedical Engineering and Mathematical Engineering in Data Science

Despite its short history, the Department of Information and Communication Technologies (DTIC) is already recognized for its high-quality research output and international impact. From the outset, it has emphasized scientific excellence in all its activities. This is clear in the CVs of the teaching staff. DTIC is leader in both the number of researchers contracted through the Catalan government’s ICREA programme and the number of grants received from the European Research Council (ERC). It is also the department that contributes the most to make UPF the top Spanish university in terms of ICT R&D funding from European funds (see “Key figures”

Thesebelow).and other achievements have helped to position DTIC within the top 100 departments of its kind in the world, according to the prestigious Shanghai ranking (see Section 4 on rankings below).

2 Data refer to the 2015-2021 period.

— ICREA research professors:4 10

— International teaching staff:3 46%

4 The Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA) offers permanent tenured positions at Catalan host institutions to top researchers from around the world.

It also offers several master’s degrees, including the new Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Degree in Artificial Intelligence, and a PhD programme.

systems. All students will spend their first semester in UPF (Barcelona), and continue in any of the other consortium member universities (Italy, Netherlands, or Slovenia). The students will be offered to specialize in one of the four offered strands: intelligent decision making in Spain, robotics in Italy, cybersecurity in The Netherlands, and data science in Slovenia. As Erasmus Mundus this program offers full scholarships that covers tuition fees and a monthly allowance during all the program.

— The master’s degree in Cognitive Systems and Interactive Media focuses on three main fields of knowledge: interactive technology, cognitive sciences and interactive media.

— The Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (EMJM) in Artificial Intelligence is scheduled to start during the academic year 2023-2024. It is organized by UPF in collaboration with the universities of Sapienza, Radboud and Ljubljana. This new joint masters degree will give the students the foundational knowledge needed to explore both key contextual areas and complex technical applications of Artificial Intelligence (Al)

— The master’s degree in Brain and Cognition will guide students through the latest and most exciting findings brought about by the interaction between cognitive research and brain research.

— The Engineering School offers four main bachelor’s degree programmes: Audiovisual Systems EngineeringTelecommunicationsComputerEngineering,Science,Network and Mathematical Engineering in Data Science The four programmes are highly integrated and share many first-year and several second-year subjects. It is thus possible for students on one programme to earn a second bachelor’s degree in optimal time by completing the other two programmes’ compulsory subjects as optional subjects for their original degree.

— The bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering places a great deal of emphasis on computational, physiological and biological modelling and thus features optional tracks focused on systems biology, neuroscience, the cardiovascular system and the musculoskeletal system.
