FULL OFFICIAL STUDY PROGRAMMES (bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees and doctorates)

The programmes involved are adapted to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and accredited by external organizations. The programmes are established in terms of ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits and recognized throughout the European Union.

Structure of university studies in Spain BACHELOR’S DEGREE 180-240 ECTS credits (3-4 years)

Scholarships, grants and loans Bachelor’s and master’s degree students can apply for scholarships available from the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport (www.aecid.es) or from AGAUR, the Catalan government’s Agency for the Management of University and Research Grants (www10.gencat.cat/agaur_web). Students from EU countries other than Spain may only apply for such grants if they or one of their family’s main earners worked in Spain throughout the previous year. Students from non-EU countries must meet the same requirement and have a permanent residence permit. Students may also apply for scholarships from other institutions, such as those of the Spanish Agency for International Development (AID), the Carolina Foundation and the Fulbright Programme. Many educational and governmental institutions have systems for funding studies offering students loans on favourable terms. UPF provides enrolment fee scholarships for master’s degree candidates with outstanding academic records. Application process — Application: online from November to June. Application fee: €30.21 (www.upf.edu/mastersdegrees). — The documentation submitted by students coming from non-EU countries must be duly authenticated through diplomatic channels or bear an apostille certificate. — Admission: once admitted to the programme (February, April, May or July) the candidate must pay a deposit (€600, non-refundable) of the tuition fee to reserve their place. — Enrolment: during September.

Admission requirements To access to a doctoral programme at UPF, candidates must have completed a bachelor’s degree and a research-oriented master’s degree programme. Additionally, specific admission requirements apply to every programme. International students (non-EU students): the UPF Admissions Office may ask for a certificate, issued by the university from which you graduated, stating that your qualification entitles you to take a doctoral programme in your country of origin.

UPF offers nine doctoral programmes which encompass all of the University’s disciplines:

A fee of approximately €400 per academic year is payable to cover the tutoring involved in writing a thesis.


International mobility programmes Study Abroad Program www.upf.edu/studyabroad The UPF’s Study Abroad Program provides interdisciplinary training offering a wide range of academic programmes which can be taken over one or two terms or whole a year. Exchange programmes (Erasmus and bilateral agreements) and visiting students www.upf.edu/incoming It is possible to study at UPF through an exchange agreement. The University has signed more than 250 with higher education institutions all over the world. It is possible to come as a visiting bachelor’s or master’s degree student and spend between three months and one academic year at UPF.

Barcelona International Summer School www.upf.edu/barcelonasummerschool In summer, the Study Abroad Program is available through the Barcelona International Summer School. This is a six-week international programme, open to local and foreign students, and includes courses in humanities, communication, political science, economics and business management.

Language programme: Spanish Programme www.upf.edu/spanishprogram UPF offers the chance to study Spanish during your time at the University. You can choose between a one-month intensive course or a longer course lasting a whole academic year. UPF also runs courses to prepare for the diploma in Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE) exams.


Campus life UPF is an urban university linked to the city of Barcelona. Its three campuses are located in the city centre and it is open to the local community.

Legal procedures — EU / students: have the right to free movement and residence in Spain. Once in Barcelona, if your stay is longer than three months, you must apply for inclusion in the Central Register of Foreign Nationals. — Non-EU / students: must obtain the student residence visa (visado de estancia por estudios) from the Spanish consulate in your country of origin, or legal residence. To apply for a visa, you need accreditation of acceptance on a UPF study programme, among other documents. If your authorized stay is longer than six months, you must apply for your Foreigner Identity Card, within one month of entering Spain. You must apply for this authorization directly at the police station.

Work permit: if you want to study and work (either selfemployed or employed), you will need a work permit, with the following conditions: — In a part-time contract, working hours must not interfere with your school hours. — If you sign up for a full-time contract you are allowed to work up to three months, in which case it shall not coincide or overlap with any term of the academic year. — The income earned will not count as being proof of the ability to sustain your stay. — The validity of the work permit will be for the same duration as the contract and cannot be longer than the duration of the student residence permit.

Accommodation UPF student residence halls are located a few minutes away from its campuses (www.resa.es). In addition, the University has signed agreements with other halls of residence in Barcelona. Additionally, you may find the Barcelona Housing Service for Students (www.bcn-housing-students.com) and Barcelona Centre Universitari (BCU) (www.bcu.cat) useful.

Cost of living Barcelona is more or less expensive depending on your country of origin and costs vary according to the area of the city and the type of accommodation in which you choose to live, and, of course, your lifestyle. Average monthly expenses are €900.
