— The Grammar and Cognition Lab (GraC) studies links between language and cognition by studying language patterns in cognitive disorders. GraC seeks to expand the range of clinical data, including deviant language patterns in autism, schizophrenia, and dementias.
Research groups
— The Computational Linguistics and Linguistic Theory (COLT) group combines theoretical linguistic methods with quantitative and computational tools to study how language works. Its focus is on computational modelling, using techniques from AI and Machine Learning.
— Gr@el (Language Learning and Language Teaching Research Group) brings together research in the field of applied linguistics, language learning and didactics. It works with diverse languages, in multiple contexts (mother tongue, foreign language, etc.), levels, and social groups.
— The IULATERM (Lexicon and Technology) research topics are basic and applied terminology analysis understood as the collection of lexical units that transfer specialised knowledge in the scientific, technical and professional discourse in a real communicative framework. Its research is carried mainly on lexicology and neology.
— The Formal Linguistics Group (GLiF) works on the formal description of the architecture of human language and the interactions between different modules — anddataandmorphology,phonology,syntax,semanticspragmatics—basedonfromRomance,Germanic,signedlanguages.
— The ALLENCAM (Language Acquisition from Multilingual Catalonia) interests lie in the field of language acquisition processes and outcomes in different learning situations: formal instruction and naturalistic contexts, study/ residence abroad, and bilingual, trilingual and multilingual settings.
— The INFOLEX (Lexicographic Information) research interests lie in the study of lexis as the basis for dictionaries as well as the information that both lexis and dictionaries may contain, with the ultimate aim to bring about lexicographic improvements (separation of meanings, treatment of polysemy, verified equivalences).
— The Discourse and Translation Studies Group (GEDIT) studies diverse communicative situations: pragmatics of discourse, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, translation of multimodal genres, legaleconomic translation, and stylistics applied to literary translation.
— GrEP (Prosodic Studies Group) aims to understand the role of prosody and gesture in human communication and in language understanding and processing, including: interface between audiovisual prosody and pragmatics, processing of audiovisual prosody, and acquisition of audiovisual prosody in L1 and L2.
TRILCAT (Research Group for the Study of Translation, Reception and Literature) aims to deepen the understanding of literature and culture from the 19th century to the present from the study of contacts between literatures and the role of writers and translators as cultural mediators.

Enrolment in our master’s programmes, which can be followed entirely or partially in English, is eminently international with students mainly from Asia (38%) and Europe (16%).
The Faculty of Translation and Language Sciences encourages the use of different languages (English and French or German) as an important instrumental skill, especially at the undergraduate level, where over 61% of class hours are taught in English or a third language

— The master’s degree in Discourse: Communication, Society and Learning is an interuniversity programme offered by UPF and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). Its main goal is to promote research
and to train experts in the development and application of theories, methods and practices related to the study of language in social, communicative and learning contexts.
— The bachelor’s degree in Applied Languages aims to train professional linguists with the necessary skills to manage specialized naturalsecondapplicationtheorywilltwosettings.communicationmultilingualinprofessionalStudentswillmasterforeignlanguagesandknowaboutlinguisticanddifferentareasofoflinguistics:fromlanguageacquisitiontolanguageprocessing.
— The PhD programme in Translation and Language Sciences is aimed primarily at individuals trained in language and/or translation studies wishing to pursue research training on these subjects at a graduate level. It is an interdisciplinary programme, with multiple areas of research tightly linked with our research groups. Students with backgrounds other than in language and translation, such as psychology, pedagogy, engineering or humanities are welcome.
— The double bachelor’s degree in Translation and Interpreting and Applied Languages enables students to earn one bachelor’s degree in Translation and Interpreting and another in Applied Languages in five years.
— The master in Translation among Global Languages is addressed to graduate students in Humanities or Social Sciences with a very high level of Chinese and Spanish who are interested in working as professional translators in the private sector. The programme focusses on translation and interpretation between Chinese
— The master’s degree in Theoretical and Applied Linguistics combines theoretical and applied linguistics in a single programme. Students acquire a solid grounding in essential areas of linguistic theory and specialize in one of five fields: formal and descriptive linguistics; acquisition;languagelanguage learning; lexicology and terminology; or computational linguistics.
— The aim of the master’s degree in Translation Studies is to train university graduates to become specialists in this area. It offers academic and research tracks, as well as a practical track designed to enable students to achieve excellence as qualified specialized translators. It also includes an optional interpreting component.
