GRADUATE & INTERNATIONAL CHARGER DAYS January 2023
A hearty warm welcome to Graduate and International Charger Days January 2023. We are excited to welcome so many of you on starting your next journey. Indeed, this will be our largest graduate class ever! We have put together a comprehensive schedule of events for Graduate & International Student Orientation. You will receive a lot of information during this time. Remember, check your emails multiple times a day, and never be afraid to ask questions and seek support. We wish you well on your journey. Before you know it, you will be graduating again and beginning another chapter as a highly qualified Charger alum.
We value your opinions. It is the only way to improve the services we offer. To do so effectively, we ask that you complete the event survey.
WHAT MAKES THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN SPECIAL?
Simply put, you do. You will find that the university works hard at creating a family atmosphere where you are included and belong. People go out of their way to help, support, and genuinely be friendly. It values its international outlook. Indeed, many of its employees either immigrated to the United States themselves or have strong ties to their family heritage. As a Charger, we expect you to add your diversity to our DNA. You will have an outstanding experience if you get involved, step out of your comfort zone, and link yourself to our collective community. Please contact the Office of Graduate and International Student Life (OGISL) staff if you need advice, support, or simply to share a cuppa.

In addition, you will have the opportunity to meet graduate student leaders from a variety of graduate and hybrid recognized student clubs and organizations on campus who will provide you with information about programs, meetings, and leadership opportunities.
The OGISL is here to provide welfare, advising, and social interaction. We act as the conduit between your academic faculty and a myriad of free support services and programs. Chief among these is the Center for Learning Resources (CLR), which is here to help support your academic needs so that you are successful in the classroom. Please make sure you use the NAVIGATE and CORQ apps, which are integral to your success at the University of New Haven.
Besides assisting with your needs, our office also plans professional development programs and social engagement opportunities such as our monthly Grad Night Out program, our #Pro-S Series, the International Festival, and Graduate Student Appreciation Week. We also offer ways for students to get involved through our Campus Connectors program or the Graduate Student Engagement Team.
I hope that you all have an interactive and informative Orientation Day. Please feel free to reach out to me, a member of my staff, or any of the orientation leaders with any questions or concerns you may have. Best wishes for a successful student experience!

MEET OUR STAFF (CONTINUED)

Hello, Chargers!
Welcome to your new home for the next few years. It is my pleasure to welcome all of you to the University of New Haven! My name is Prateek Mansingh. I am a second-year graduate student in the Healthcare Administration program, and it is my honor to be serving as your Graduate Student Council president for this academic year.
I would highly encourage each and every one of you to get involved in the University and immerse yourself in all the experiences the University of New Haven has to offer. As Hockey Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzty said, ”you miss a hundred percent of the shots you don’t take." Nothing should stop you from exploring everything that the University has to offer. Pick and choose, and join the Recognized Student Organizations of your choice. Attend the myriad of events we have throughout the year, and make the best of your graduate experience at the University of New Haven because we’re not here to just drown ourselves in textbooks and coursework. There is a saying that I have always believed in: “Live your freedom, but don’t ignore your aim; live your life, but don’t keep away from entertainment.”
If you want to get more involved with the Graduate Student Council (GSC), we currently have openings on our executive board and our government senate. Executive Board Officers will hold different positions and will serve as a bridge between the graduate students and the university administration. GSC senators represent their college to serve as a liaison to the graduate students and the council. Senators will also serve on different committees of their choosing, such as the judicial, dining, and public relations committees. As a senator, you must attend GSC events and general body meetings, conduct outreach to our student organizations, and serve as a leader to our graduate community.
Life in college can be filled with extremes — good and bad, with a few in between. Feel free to reach out if you need any help at all. I’m here to help all of you, and always remember, we are all in this together! Cheers to new experiences and making the best of your time here!
Best, Prateek Mansingh (he/him/his)

COUNCIL?
The Graduate Student Council (GSC) is a student-run governing body, allowing all graduate students to voice any and all concerns regarding the University. The GSC also plans professional development, community service, and social events throughout the academic year for graduate students to partake in. The GSC executive board consists of seven positions including: President, Executive Vice President, Vice President of Finance, Vice President of Operations, Vice President of Administration, Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion, and Vice President of Public Relations. Apart from the Executive Board, students can apply to be a senator for their specific college where they will serve as a liaison between the GSC and their peers. There are two positions open for each of the five university colleges. Furthermore, Judicial Council, Budget Committee, and Programming Board all have positions to be filled with graduate student leaders. As a graduate student at the University of New Haven, you are already a general member of the GSC, but we encourage you to apply for any and all available positions as well as attend our biweekly meetings.

PROFESSIONAL SEMINAR SERIES
#ProSeminarSeries & #LeadershipS-Series
The Professional Seminar Series (#ProS-Series) is designed to enhance the learning experience for graduate students outside of the classroom. The seminars will assist students with entering the career of their choice and developing lifelong skills and understandings through the Competency Learning Experience (CLE).
We are excited to announce that following feedback from our graduate students, we will be running a Leadership Seminar Series during the spring semester. This seminar series will focus on exploring models of leadership, skill set building, conflict resolution, community leadership, and women in leadership.
We are hopeful that both the #ProS-Series and the #LeadershipS-Series will be eligible for University of New Haven certificates for those who complete the program to place on your resumes.
It is strongly recommended that all graduate students complete the iKnow series of seminars or work closely with the Career Development Center. Monthly

Annual Cross Disciplinary Case Competition
The Case Competition (CC) is a chance to grow beyond your comfort zone, apply what you are learning in your courses, and raise your career prospects. The CC is truly cross-disciplinary and integrative, as you will find in today’s workplace. It requires diagnosing a real-organization case from multiple perspectives and recommending solutions. Judges are recruited from a pool of the university’s professional contacts as well as our esteemed alumni. Participation boosts participants’ career networks and resume distinctiveness.
Last year’s program asked teams of graduate students to diagnose Verily Life Sciences and machine learning. Students from engineering, business, criminal justice, and I/O psycholgy all had something to contribute to this case. Several professional workshops preceded the competition to prepare teams to perform at their best.
Interested graduate students must apply via the Office of Graduate and International Student Life (OGISL) Charger Connection portal. Check your University of New Haven email later this fall for more details.
Graduate Student Showcase
Will you be participating in research as part of your graduate coursework? Do you have an internship or assistantship that includes project development? The Graduate Student Showcase is a poster forum for University of New Haven graduate students to present their research and experiential learning opportunities to the university community. Students from all graduate programs are encouraged to present current or recently completed projects both within their academic studies and their internships. The showcase is a wonderful way to engage the community in the benefits of research and how to communicate your experiences to people outside of your field of study. Students do not have to have a poster completed for the application but will need to provide an abstract on the application. GSS will print posters for those who do not already have a poster. Participants will be judged by a panel of faculty and staff and may be awarded up to $100.00 in prizes. Students can apply to participate in the Graduate Student Showcase at the beginning of the spring semester, so check your university email in January.

SOCIAL EVENTS
The Grad Night Out Series
This is a monthly social gathering or event presented by the Office of Graduate and International Student Life. These events can range from a game night at a local restaurant to an off-campus trip or sporting event. The Grad Night Out Series provides an opportunity for our graduate students to network and interact with one another on a social level outside of the classroom. These popular events tend to sell out quickly, so we encourage graduate students to sign up as soon as tickets go on sale. The Grad Night Out series is sponsored by the Graduate Student Council and in the past has included trips to a Major League Baseball and a National Football League game, an amusement park and haunted graveyard, and Radio City Music Hall in NYC for the Christmas Spectacular show.
