Spring 2021 Commencement Program

COMMENCEMENT MAY 17, 2021

Congratulations, to the University of New Haven Graduates! The University of New Haven’s focus on experiential learning — hands-on experience artfully combined with classroom instruction — enables graduates to move effortlessly into professional careers. Our time-honored embrace of this philosophy has paved a path for thousands of graduates to successfully navigate lives in the arts, engineering, business, music, healthcare, public safety, and more, at the same time contributing to the greater good in innumerable ways. The writer and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn,” and that concept, that the smallest idea can grow exponentially, is embodied in a University of New Haven education, which cultivates in equal parts the excitement of discovery, the encouragement of imagination, and the confidence to execute ideas. This year, 957 undergraduate and 680 graduate degree candidates reached a singular milestone in their educational journeys. They have achieved expertise in their chosen areas of study and have shown the promise of many more successes in the future. We honor their intellectual achievements, congratulate them on their efforts, and bid them good fortune in the years ahead.

HATFIELD SCHOLARS

The John D. Hatfield Scholars Program John D. Hatfield, Ph.D., was the beloved provost and chief operating officer of the University of New Haven and concurrently the University’s first executive vice president. He came to help lead the University of New Haven in the next ambitious stages of its transformation, making great strides during a tenure cut short by ill health. He earned the affection and respect of the entire University community. John Hatfield died on July 30, 2003, succumbing to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, leaving his wife of 29 years, Dr. Deborah J. Wieder-Hatfield, and a sorrowful University community. Yet his memory will long be with us and serve as a beacon for progress in fulfilling our mission to “make tomorrow” for our students today and for decades to come. In that spirit, generous donors established The John D. Hatfield Endowed Scholarship to support students attending the University. Additionally, an anonymous major donor provided a gift to establish The John D. Hatfield Scholars Program, recognizing up to three seniors and three juniors who demonstrate exemplary academic and civic achievement and who are part of the University’s Honors Program.

PAGEANTRY

Pageantry As our graduates, dressed in their academic robes, receive their degrees, they carry on a proud 800-year-old tradition in academe. Until the sixteenth century, the gown, with many variations in cut and style, was a common form of dress. However, as popular fashions changed, scholars and other professionals continued to wear robes as a form of recognition and often because they were required by university statutes. The hoods on the gowns evolved in much the same way — from common dress to a symbol of rank of academic achievement, with the colors in the hoods indicating both the institution granting the scholar’s degree and the field of study. In 1895, when American colleges and universities decided to create a system of academic garb, they adopted much of the European system. The gown for the baccalaureate degree, hoodless and with long pointed sleeves, is worn closed. Upon receiving the degree, the bachelor moves the tassel on the mortarboard cap from the right side to the left. Bachelor’s degree candidates wear black gowns; associate degree candidates wear blue. The gown for the master’s degree, with hood and open sleeves, is black and worn open. The color in the lining of the hood indicates the institution that granted the wearer’s degree. The color of the hood’s border indicates the field of study. The gown for the doctoral degree, usually black and worn open, is faced with velvet and has three velvet bars on each of the full round sleeves. The color of the border of the hood indicates the field of study, and the lining color indicates the institution that awarded the doctorate.

40

Although the usual color for the three gowns is black, some universities have chosen to use their school colors as the robe color. For instance, a graduate of Columbia or Yale may wear a blue robe; a graduate of Harvard, crimson. The origin of the mortarboard cap has been lost to history, but its use as an academic symbol dates back to at least the sixteenth century, for it is mentioned in the folk literature of the period. One theory of its symbolism is that, just as under Roman law a slave was freed by being allowed to wear a cap, so the scholar’s cap became a symbol of academic freedom. As today’s graduates step forward proudly in their academic robes to receive their degrees, they carry on the ancient tradition. Listed below are the colors of the disciplines represented in the academic programs and of the faculty of the University of New Haven. The Maces

The Collar of Authority

The marshals leading the academic procession carry the twin maces of the University of New Haven. The history of the academic mace dates back to early universities, which were generally staffed by clergy and supported by the sovereign or high officials. The mace came into use as the symbol of academic authority and of the triumph of law and reason over ignorance and anarchy.

A gift from the University of New Haven Alumni Association, the presidential collar was presented to the University during the 75th Anniversary Convocation in the fall of 1995 and will be worn by the presidents of the University of New Haven in perpetuity as a symbol of the commitment of the alumni to the success of their alma mater.

The mace began as a weapon, a symbol of power. Use of a mace with a fluted head and heavy pommel dates back to the late Bronze Age, or about 1500 B.C. The weapon evolved in the Middle Ages as an effective armor-breaking device when swords proved ineffective against plate armor. Maces were especially favored by sergeants-at-arms assigned to protect a mounted knight or sovereign in battle. Hence, they became associated symbolically with the power and authority of the ruler. Additionally, the mace was the weapon of medieval soldier-churchmen who sought to avoid Biblical prohibitions against the use of the sword.

The presidential collar is the official symbol of office and has been worn by the heads of colleges and universities since ancient times. Normally a large necklace worn over the gown, the collar contains symbols of significance to the institution. The collar is generally conferred upon presidents at the time of inauguration and is worn at all events requiring formal academic regalia. The University of New Haven collar, a pendant supported by eight links on either side, was crafted by Peter Indorf, an acclaimed New Haven goldsmith and jeweler. The original design is fashioned from sterling silver and plated in 22-karat gold. The pendant contains the seal of the University of New Haven, and each of the links contains symbols that represent the University of New Haven’s foundation and roots in the YMCA and Yale University. The pendant and links are adorned with sapphires.

The University of New Haven maces, designed by the late Alexis Sommers of North Miami Beach, Florida, are based on historical designs used by craft guilds and academic institutions in fifteenth-century London. By that time, symbolism had replaced function, and the typical mace had become ornate and was cast in precious metals. The maces of the University of New Haven, interpreted in brass and stainless steel by New Haven craftsman Joseph Constantini, were donated in 1976 by the late Norman I. Botwinik, Chair of the University of New Haven Board of Governors from 1971 to 1992. One mace represents the wisdom and authority of the faculty; the other represents the wisdom and authority of the Board of Governors. Based on history, but of contemporary design and twentieth-century materials, the maces symbolize a university dedicated to the ancient and continuing search for truth and knowledge.
