PathwayOregon 2024 Report UNIVERSITY OF OREGON

To my fellow Ducks,

As we celebrate PathwayOregon’s fifteenth year, I want to extend our deepest gratitude for your unwavering support of this vital program. Your generosity has profoundly impacted the lives of our students, and we are incredibly thankful for your commitment.

Since its inception, PathwayOregon has opened doors to higher education for more than 9,000 students at the University of Oregon. By alleviating the burden of tuition and fees, you have empowered these talented individuals to pursue their dreams and achieve their academic goals. Since the program’s inception, more than $62.7 million from generous donors like you have transformed the lives of Oregon’s brightest students who once thought a college degree was out of reach. An entire generation of Ducks has had the opportunity to chart their own course with your support behind them.

In addition to financial assistance, PathwayOregon offers personalized academic advising, a vital ingredient to helping students navigate university life and stay on track for graduation. This additional support is having real, tangible impact on student success: This year, the second-year retention rate for the fall 2022–23 cohort of Pathway students has surpassed that of their non-Pathway peers.

With a retention rate of 87.3 percent compared to 86.7 percent for non-Pathway students, our PathwayOregon students are proving their resilience and determination. These students are more likely to be first generation, lower income, and/or from rural areas, all of which contribute to a higher likelihood of pausing their education or dropping out altogether. Given these demographic realities, seeing this cohort continue on at rates similar to, or even above, their non-Pathway counterparts is a significant achievement worth celebrating.

PathwayOregon benefits not only the program participants, but the University of Oregon as a whole. Pathway enables our students to more fully engage in their studies and participate in campus life, and our community is richer, more vibrant, and more equitable for it. As a supporter, you are breaking down financial barriers to help create opportunities that transcend economic limitations. Your philanthropy inspires us all and highlights the transformative power of education.

As we reflect on the past fifteen years of PathwayOregon, we are filled with gratitude for your partnership in this remarkable journey. Your generosity has paved the way for countless success stories and has instilled hope in the hearts of our students. Together, we are making a lasting impact on their lives and the future of our great institution.

With heartfelt appreciation,

“ My Pathway scholarship is the reason I came here to begin with, after not being a very engaged student in high school. Now, I meet with a Pathway advisor every other week. They can answer almost any questions I have about registration, picking classes, and degree paths. Pathway has pretty much defined my time here.”

“ When I found out I received a PathwayOregon scholarship, my mom and I cried. My senior year in high school was difficult, and that was a

defining moment. It showed me ‘OK, I

do this. I’m being recognized and supported.’ My scholarships motivate me to stay academically sharp and stay on top of everything.

Student Retention

PathwayOregon freshmen, sophomores, and juniors have consistently persisted at rates on par with their higher-income peers.

Minding the Gap

PathwayOregon is a promise that tuition and fees will be covered for four years, as long as students remain eligible and meet academic requirements. However, the amount the UO provides varies according to each student’s needs, enabling us to leverage state and federal funds.

Graduation Rates

The four-year graduation rates of PathwayOregon students greatly exceed historical rates for low-income Oregonians. In 2007, the year before the Pathway program was launched, the average four-year graduation rate for Federal Pell Grant recipients attending the UO was 31 percent, slightly better than the rate at other Oregon public universities.

Just one year later, the first cohort of Pathway students entered the UO—a cohort that graduated at a rate of 43 percent. Now, fifteen years after the inception of the Pathway program, an incredible 57 percent of Pathway students that entered the UO in 2019 graduated in four years.

“ The program is more than financial assistance. As a PathwayOregon scholar, you get resources and support. I always go to my advisors. They help me find tutoring and we discuss what classes I should take. I want to make sure I’m on track to graduate and I want to make the most of the investment that Pathway donors have made.”
