2012 Year in Review
We thank you The University warmly welcomes new donors to our circle of supporters and greatly appreciates the continued generosity of many in the UTAS community who give regularly. The very generous support of nearly 2,000 donors enabled the UTAS Foundation to make a positive impact in 2012. At the University of Tasmania we work hard to create life-changing and life-shaping experiences that provide the foundation on which to build careers and success for our students and our University. This is made possible, in part, through your continued investment in the future. The University thanks you. In 2012 the contributions of alumni and friends ensured the success of the UTAS Scholarships Program. Through our 2012 Annual Appeal and other fundraising partnerships, the UTAS Foundation was able to establish 15 new scholarships. Almost 500 students received an award, totalling $2.7 million in scholarships. The Menzies Stage II Campaign continued the vision of the medical sciences precinct in the Hobart central business district for the benefit of all Tasmanians, now and into the future, raising $3.6 million from 21 donors with only $1.3 million to be raised. The UTAS Foundation had the opportunity to thank our supporters at dinners held in Hobart and Launceston during the autumn, and we welcomed over 2,500 UTAS alumni and friends to events across the globe. In 2013 the UTAS Foundation will support UTAS’ strategic priorities through lifting the value of established and new scholarships, remaining supportive of under-privileged students, and developing scholarships that compare favourably with other Australian universities. We will expand connections with our alumni family through a more inclusive engagement with UTAS staff and ‘student alumni’ who have studied at UTAS for one year. The UTAS Foundation works with the UTAS Careers Advisory Service and volunteer alumni to build the Career Mentor Program, and this will be made available internationally during 2013. We also aim to accentuate internationalisation through an overseas exchange scholarship program to prepare our students to work and live in our global society. So, thank you once more. We look forward to welcoming you to our upcoming celebratory Foundation dinners and other events throughout the year, as well as your continued involvement and support of the University and its students.

Appeals that established new scholarships Campus Community Builders @UTAS Scholarship The initiatives of a group called the Campus Community Builders (CCB) have resulted in an inaugural Campus Community Builders @UTAS Scholarship to be offered in 2013. To build a sense of community and connection among staff on the Launceston campuses the CCB committee encourages staff members to interact socially via a range of social, cultural and fundraising activities and initiatives. One such initiative has been to empower students to develop a greater sense of community on campus and integral to this is the ability to offer a scholarship. Resourceful fundraising events such as a farmers’ market, cake stall, morning tea and a second-hand book sale raised enough funds to support a community-minded student from the local area to pursue their own passions and enrol at UTAS. CCB’s enthusiastic efforts resulted in fundraising targets being exceeded, which has encouraged the group to run similar events in 2013 to continue support for the scholarship.
“Being part of the CCB scholarship fundraising team has been a wonderful experience – not only has it allowed us the opportunity to work together across departments and further develop our sense of community on campus, but we now have the opportunity to make a positive impact on the life of an individual from the greater local community. There were many worthy applicants and the process of narrowing it down to one was a difficult task, but the CCB has been inspired by the experience to keep working towards the longevity of the scholarship.”
Julia Mollison, Executive Assistant, School of Computing and Information Systems

Leo Cooper-White Memorial Scholarship The Leo Cooper-White Memorial Scholarship was set up to commemorate Leo, a thirdyear student at the University of Tasmania School of Visual and Performing Arts who died tragically in 2011. Leo’s family, friends and the small, close-knit SVPA community rallied together to remember Leo and his contribution to the School by fundraising to establish a scholarship in his name. Dynamic and creative fundraising efforts of Leo’s family and friends have been rewarded with the Leo Cooper-White Memorial Appeal’s initial target of $30,000 being well exceeded. The $40,000 raised has been matched by the UTAS Foundation and will endow the scholarship in perpetuity. The inaugural award is provided through a gift from the SVPA in 2013.

Old Hobartian Centenary Scholarship To mark a century of high quality state secondary education in Tasmania, former students and friends of Hobart High School and Hobart College have launched an appeal to fund a perpetual scholarship for students graduating from the College who enrol in any undergraduate course at UTAS. The appeal will reach its climax in 2013, the centenary year. At the end of 2012, $73,000 of the $200,000 target had been raised and the first scholarship student will be awarded in 2013.

Save the Tasmanian Devil Appeal The second half of 2012 has been an eventful period for the Appeal with a renewed clarity of focus. Crucially, a new Chair of the Save the Tasmanian Devil Appeal Committee was appointed. The Appeal welcomed Michael Aird to the position in July. One of the most exciting developments for the Appeal was the launch of an agreement with the Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania. In mid-October the Tasmanian Premier launched the partnership, which positions the Appeal as the official charity for the tourism industry in Tasmania. This partnership will facilitate access for the Appeal into the many tourism operators across the state and this opportunity has already been taken up by a number of businesses. In addition, events like the Tasmanian Devil Degustation Dinner held at Josef Chromy Winery in October raised well over $20,000 and allowed us to highlight the Tasmanian businesses that support the Appeal, including Valhalla ice-cream, Pure Foods Eggs, Hartz mineral water and 666 Vodka. The year came to a successful conclusion with the awarding of the second round of grants and scholarships. Together with the first round of grants a record of just over $450,000 was allocated to 17 worthy recipients. As one recipient, Associate Professor Greg Woods, recently remarked, “... without the support of the research grants allocated from money raised by the Save the Tasmanian Devil Appeal we would not have achieved our recent advances. The research currently being undertaken by my team is so important to the welfare of the Tasmanian devil – it must continue.” Individual donations continue to be strong and your support is greatly appreciated. This support coupled with robust corporate interest in the Appeal’s work is paving the way for an exciting 2013. Associate Professor Greg Woods talking at the Josef Chromy Tasmanian Devil Degustation Dinner

Annual Appeal With the generous donations from over 230 alumni and friends, the 2012 UTAS Foundation Annual Appeal has already raised almost $60,000. The 2012 Annual Appeal ends in May 2013 and by giving to this Appeal you will ensure our University can continue to support the brightest students, and those in most need of financial assistance. Through contributions to this fund the Annual Appeal Scholarship stipend, which supports a student commencing in any UTAS undergraduate course for up to four years, has been increased in 2013 to $3,500. Current scholars being supported by the generosity of alumni and friends of the University: 2013 Kristen Kay – Agricultural Science 2012

UTAS Foundation dinners
DINNER 2012
The UTAS Foundation dinners are hosted each year to celebrate outstanding achievement. We also acknowledge the generous support of donors and the exciting future of scholarship recipients.
In 2013 the UTAS Foundation dinners will again be hosted in Launceston and Hobart, on Thursday 21 March and 11 April respectively, to ensure that all our supporters and students have the opportunity to attend these black tie gala events that celebrate generosity, excellence and creativity. These dinners are not UTAS Foundation fundraising events, rather they are hosted by the Foundation to ensure the maximum numbers of scholarship recipients can attend. To assist with costs the UTAS Foundation seeks monetary or in-kind support from individuals and organisations to ensure the success of these festive events. This includes encouraging table hosts to include scholarship recipients as their guest. If you or your guests would like to support the 2014 UTAS Foundation dinners please contact Amal Cutler on 03 6226 2596 or email amal.cutler@utas.edu.au

“The scholarship was instrumental in providing me with financial assistance allowing me to devote myself to my Master of Clinical Psychology. I feel very privileged to be a recipient of such a prestigious and generous award and am indebted to the Jim Bacon Foundation for its financial support.” Camille Plant, 2012 Jim Bacon Memorial Scholarship
“The Bruce Wall Estate Scholarship has helped tremendously by allowing me to concentrate on my studies without the financial pressure associated with relocating to Hobart from a regional area.” Alex John 2010-2013 Bruce Wall Estate Scholarship
“It has been an exciting initiative of the Bruce Wall Estate Trust to encourage young students to study in agricultural science with the support of a scholarship.” David McEwan Co-Trustee of the Bruce Wall Estate Rowan Snare, 2012 Waratah-Wynyard Council Bill French Memorial Scholarship, with Mayor Robby Walsh

“The Tim Hawkins Memorial Scholarship gave me the opportunity to work for six months at the International Criminal Court, an opportunity that I would not have otherwise had. It was difficult, interesting and extremely rewarding. This international exposure will hold me in good stead helping me to continue to contribute in my field.” Simon McKenzie, 2012 Tim Hawkins Memorial Scholarship
“To be part of the community to which Bill French tirelessly contributed and to have worked alongside him in Council makes presenting this award in Bill French’s memory a privilege beyond words. To award it in support of a young local like Rowan, whose parents and grandparents are part of this rural community, is an honour.” Mayor Robby Walsh, Waratah-Wynyard Council
“This scholarship has enabled me to study without having to work part-time. Brighton Council has supported me financially through this scholarship and given me the opportunity to gain work experience with the Council, which has provided me with insight into my future career as an engineer.” Edward Snowball, 2012 Lee Warren Memorial Scholarship
“Supporting students through this scholarship in memory of my son has added another dimension to my life. It keeps me going when I hear from past students at Christmas time or, as recently, when they send me flowers. I’ve been fortunate to have met a delightful and diverse group of awardees over the 17 years of supporting the scholarship. It is an especially wonderful way to help students, particularly those from out of Hobart.” Bess Kable, Sponsor of the John Kable Memorial Scholarship in Law

Springboard to Higher Education Program The Springboard to Higher Education Program (Springboard) was established to assist communities across Tasmania to value further education by encouraging bright high school students to continue education beyond Year 10. Springboard is offered by the University of Tasmania to improve access to, and participation in, university life. In 2012, this initiative reached its 10-year milestone. Springboard was established in 2002 through the support of the MyState Financial Foundation and the Sylvia and Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation to address Tasmania’s poor retention rates, which are among the lowest in Australia for Years 11 and 12. Launceston City Council, the Bruce Wall Estate, UTAS Riawunna and Woolnorth Wind Farms have since come on board, resulting in the program now being offered in every state high school in Tasmania. Springboard is funded via the UTAS Foundation, providing over $120,000 per annum to encourage graduating Year 10 students from a family with no tradition of participation in tertiary education who may be at risk of leaving the education system, and who need financial assistance to continue onto further education. Since 2009 the bursaries have assisted over 500 students, and in this year alone over 120 students are engaged with the Springboard program. The UTAS Foundation’s aim is to build on this achievement by ultimately providing the Springboard opportunity to two students in every Tasmanian state high school.
“Becoming a recipient of the Springboard bursary gave me a belief in myself to study hard through college knowing that I was good enough to make it to university.” Daniel Johnson, Bachelor of Biotechnology and Medical Research, UTAS MyState Springboard Bursary 2010, 2011 and 2012 Tasmania University Scholarship 2012

The George Alexander Foundation Scholarship In 1972, George Alexander AM (1910-2008) set up an independent philanthropic foundation as a way of sharing his wealth and giving back to the community. Today, the main focus of the George Alexander Foundation is access to education for promising young people, particularly students with financial need and those from rural and remote areas. The UTAS Foundation is partnering with The George Alexander Foundation to introduce a new scholarship program to support students who must move away from home to attend university. The scholarship program, which commences in 2013, will offer five scholarships valued at $7,500 per year for three years, amounting to $22,500 per scholar. The current financial climate in Tasmania means an increasing number of students are not able to rely on family support to move away from home to attend UTAS, and this funding will make a crucial difference to young people with academic potential by enabling them to pursue a university qualification in their chosen field. With almost one-third of all current UTAS applicants having to relocate to study, this program, which focuses on the considerable costs associated with that relocation, will, over the next five years, provide invaluable support to 15 students.

Career Mentor Program Launch 2012
A total of 2,843 alumni and friends attended 36 events, including debates and panel discussions in Launceston, Melbourne and Brisbane. The Canberra dinner was fully subscribed with more than 50 alumni and guests enjoying the beautiful surroundings of Lake Burley Griffin while listening to after-dinner speaker UTAS alumnus and 2012 Foundation Graduate Award winner Simon Hollingsworth, CEO of the Australian Sports Commission. Alumni in Hobart were treated to an evening at the Cascade Brewery with dancing to the music of the 1980s Uni Bar favourites, the Giant Hamsters. Links to our international alumni were strengthened with 280 alumni attending events in Bangkok, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Sabah and Singapore as the Vice-Chancellor toured South-East Asia in early November.

The UTAS Foundation The UTAS Foundation is the fundraising arm of the University, managed by the UTAS Advancement Office. The Foundation assists the University by working with our alumni and friends to accept, acknowledge, manage and allocate gifts. Many deserving students benefit from gifts to the Foundation, and this investment in the future of our students encourages excellence and promotes participation at UTAS. Financial support, such as endowment funds established through gifts from alumni and friends, is increasingly important as it enables UTAS to support and sustain targeted initiatives aligned with the University’s research, community and student priorities. Philanthropy in higher education is steadily growing, and at Tasmania’s university it is a welcome way for individuals and organisations to make a real difference by contributing meaningfully to the state’s cultural, economic and social development.
