UTAS FOUNDATION 2012 MID-YEAR UPDATE

2 Our thanks It is hard to believe we are already half-way through 2012, and we are pleased to report it has been a very successful year so far for the UTAS Foundation. We are close to achieving the required funds for the Menzies Stage II Campaign. In January this year the first $500,000 of a $2 million pledge directed to Menzies Stage II was received from Graeme Wood. More recently, Tasmania’s Select Foundation and an anonymous Tasmanian donor each pledged an additional $500,000. This brings the total pledged to $3.6 million of the $5 million target. We would be delighted to hear from you if you are able to contribute to this exciting project. This year for the first time, UTAS Foundation Dinners were hosted in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie, all of which were a great success. More than 700 people attended the events, which showcased our Distinguished Alumnus Professor Rupert Maclean and our Foundation Graduate Awardees Mr Brodie Neill and Mr Simon Hollingsworth. To celebrate the centenary of Hobart College in 2013, the Old Hobartians launched an appeal through the UTAS Foundation in May to raise funds for an annual scholarship. Within a short period of time the appeal has raised almost $40,000 of its $200,000 target. The UTAS Foundation will continue to support the strategic priorities of the University and provide scholarships to our students in 2012. We aim to successfully complete the Menzies Stage II Campaign and consider the philanthropic potential for the redevelopment of the University’s original home, Domain House. We thank you for your continued support, which enhances the University and provides many more opportunities for students.

4 student success story Jonathan Ritchie has received several scholarships and prizes during his time at UTAS. He is in his second year of a Bachelor of Business majoring in Business Management and Accounting. Jonathan received the Launceston Chamber of Commerce Scholarship and the Searson Buck Prize for Management of Human Resources in 2011 and the BHP TEMCO Community Foundation Scholarship in Business in 2012. Jonathan spoke of the impact of the support he has received at the UTAS Foundation Dinner held in Launceston on 19 April. “These scholarships not only ease the financial burden of university, but provide such tremendous encouragement and motivation to continue working hard at my studies, no matter how difficult circumstances may be. I am determined to prove to my sponsors that they made the right decision in choosing me as the recipient by achieving the best results I possibly can.” Jonathan Ritchie

“I thank my sponsors for their generosity, continual support and the encouragement they have provided to me, and acknowledge that their contributions have a genuine, positive impact on my time and experiences at university. I hope to one day have the opportunity to give back to the community and students who are in my position today.”

5 annual appeal The 2011 Annual Appeal wrapped up in May 2012. Thanks to the generous support of over 260 of our alumni and friends, the Appeal raised over $160,000 including matching funds from the UTAS Foundation. This year we were able to offer three Annual Appeal Scholarships to deserving students. The 2012 Annual Appeal was launched in June with a target of $130,000. By giving to the 2012 Annual Appeal you will provide vital support to our current and incoming students as they work towards their future careers. The UTAS Foundation would like to thank the 158 donors who have already committed over $41,000 to this Appeal. No matter the size of your gift, supporting the Annual Appeal has an immediate and positive impact, creating life-changing experiences that last students a lifetime. Through the Annual Appeal you can support the Annual Appeal Scholarships and the Development Fund. Alternatively, you can designate your gift to a program, faculty or appeal that matters most to you, such as the Save the Tasmanian Devil Appeal, the Old Hobartian Centenary Scholarship, the Arthur Cobbold Memorial Lecture Appeal or the faculty or institute where you studied. Whatever you choose to support, your contribution will make a life-changing impact on the current and future students of UTAS. You can have confidence that every dollar you donate to the 2012 Annual Appeal goes directly to the fund of your choice.

“The Annual Appeal Scholarship made the transition from Hobart to Launceston easier for me. Through receiving this scholarship I am able to live and study in Launceston with the financial stability I need in order to concentrate on excelling at university. I would like to thank all those who donated to the Annual Appeal Scholarship for their generosity. I am very grateful to them for providing me with the opportunity to further my education. Georgina Hall Annual Appeal Scholarship 2012 Read more at: www.utas.edu.au/annual-appeal

6 bequests Leaving a bequest to the University is a significant way for alumni and friends to make an enduring contribution to their community. Funds from bequests are targeted only to those areas specified in the will of the donor. Bequests can be: • A gift of money • A percentage of an estate, once other needs are met “I can’t think of a better way

• I give [insert amount] to the University of Tasmania Foundation for its general purposes. Giving to a specific area of interest encourages growth in an area that is important to individual donors. Such bequests must be carefully worded to ensure that donors’ wishes are met well into the future. Example wording: • I give [insert amount] to the University of Tasmania Foundation for [insert purpose]. Over time the research, courses and priorities of UTAS will change. If a bequest is made for a specific area of interest, the University requests that the following provision be included in the case that the stated purpose cannot be implemented in the future. Example wording:

For more information about leaving a bequest to the University of Tasmania, contact the UTAS Foundation directly to speak with an Advancement Officer.

• If at any time the University of Tasmania determines that it is impossible to carry out the stated purpose then the University may apply the bequest for such purpose or purposes as the University determines most closely accords with the original stated purpose.

7 old hobartian centenary scholarship 2013 marks the centenary of the founding of Hobart High School and its successor institutions, Hobart Matriculation College and Hobart College. To celebrate this significant milestone in educational attainment in Tasmania, the Old Hobartian Association has launched an appeal to former students and to the wider community to raise the capital funds needed to create a perpetual scholarship. The Old Hobartian Centenary Scholarship will annually support students graduating from Hobart College to study in any discipline at the University of Tasmania.

8 MENZIES RESEARCH INSTITUTE STAGE II To complete the Menzies Research Institute Stage II project $5 million in Australian philanthropy is required, which will be matched dollar for dollar by the Tasmanian Government. Of the $5 million required $3.6 million has been pledged, leaving a further $1.4 million to raise. Menzies Stage II will house state-of-the-art research laboratories and technology, a centre for clinical research studies in partnership with the Royal Hobart Hospital and learning facilities for the UTAS Faculty of Health Science. With the assistance of donations the project aims to be completed by January 2013, and the new Medical Science Precinct will have the capacity to accommodate over 600 employees and 900 students. 9 coffey mining – giving time to teach Over the past eight years Coffey Mining has partnered with the UTAS School of Engineering to provide staff from Coffey Mining for expert teaching in the Geotechnical Engineering specialisation of the Bachelor of Engineering degree. This is a very generous in-kind donation to the University of Tasmania. This is the only geotechnical engineering accredited specialisation in Australia and a specialisation that could not be taught at UTAS without Coffey Mining’s support. Without the donation of time and expertise from Coffey the Geotechnical Engineering stream at UTAS would not have been possible. The School very much appreciates their involvement and donation and is looking forward to continuing our relationship going forward. Professor

10 save the tasmanian devil appeal 2012 has been extraordinarily busy for the Save the Tasmanian Devil Appeal. High-profile events such as the epic production of Jesus Christ Superstar by Encore Theatre Company, featuring Appeal ambassador Jon English, raised $10,000. This donation will support an honours scholarship in the coming 12 months. In May, grants were awarded to two institutions: Tasmania Zoo at Bridgenorth and Trowunna Wildlife Park at Mole Creek, with $28,394 and $30,000 granted respectively. Both recipients plan to use the money to build and improve food preparation and hygiene facilities for the programs they run, which form part of the insurance population. Monarto Zoo in South Australia also received a grant to complete a Tasmanian devil exhibit. Sarah Washford, Senior Keeper, Native Fauna at Monarto Zoo, explains, “This exhibit has been a welcome addition to Monarto Zoo. It not only provides visitors the chance to view Tasmanian devils up close, but also the chance to attend a public keeper talk to learn more about the species and the important work we all do to ensure their existence. Many of these grants would not be possible without the continuing support of a range of businesses and corporate supporters, many of whom have committed to long-term arrangements with the Appeal, placing it on a solid footing for the coming two-year period. In addition to strong corporate support, the Appeal has experienced an increased number of donations from individuals with donations totalling over $200,000. Further gifts are needed if we are to reach our target of For more information go to: www.utas.edu.au/foundation/ devil

$500,000 in 2012. This will make a significant difference to the efforts of the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program to ensure the survival of the Tasmanian devil in the wild.

11 UTAS FOUNDATION DINNERS In the first half of 2012, the UTAS Foundation hosted dinners in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie. More than 700 people attended the three events. At the Hobart event in March, international furniture designer Brodie Neill and the Chief Executive of the Australian Sports Commission, Simon Hollingsworth, were honoured with UTAS Foundation Graduate Awards. The following month in Launceston Professor Rupert Maclean was awarded the UTAS Distinguished Alumni Award. In Hobart recent graduate Felicity Gray spoke about her experience at UTAS and how receiving a scholarship benefited her. “At the end of Year 12, the financial pressures associated with university study loomed large. Having grown up on the north-west coast, the costs associated with moving away from home would have prevented me being able to start my tertiary studies straight after Year 12. After two years of stress and constant studying, I just wanted to be at university and experience the many new opportunities it offered. The Premier of Tasmania Scholarship enabled me to do this.

12 current appeals – support is needed Wicking 2012 i Remember Community Project The Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre was established in 2008 to research and support issues confronting people with dementia and their carers. By 2020 there are projected to be over 175,000 new cases of dementia diagnosed in Australia each year. The Wicking Centre is seeking your support to raise $30,000 for the i Remember Community Project. Through the project, and in partnership with the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Wicking researchers are consulting people with dementia and their carers using reminiscence therapy. Dr Judith Homeshaw Scholarship The late Dr Judith Homeshaw was a loved and respected member of staff in the School of Government. Family, friends and colleagues have launched an appeal to raise funds to create an annual scholarship in her name. The Dr Judith Homeshaw Scholarship will support a student in any faculty whose thesis will relate to areas involving women’s participation in the contemporary Australian public sphere. The Dr Judith Homeshaw Scholarship requires donations of $35,000 to endow the scholarship in perpetuity. Arthur Cobbold Memorial Lecture Appeal The second Arthur Cobbold Memorial Lecture was held on 7 June. Professor Peter Rathjen, UTAS Vice-Chancellor, presented a lecture on ‘Stem Cells and Regeneration of the Ageing Body. With over 150 people attending, the lecture You can support any of the UTAS Foundation’s current appeals by visiting: www.utas.edu.au/foundation/ donate

was well received. To endow the Arthur Cobbold Memorial Lecture significant support is still needed to raise the target of $100,000.

13 successful appeals – wrapping up Leo Cooper-White Memorial Scholarship Appeal In June the Leo Cooper-White Memorial Scholarship Appeal reached its initial goal of $30,000, plus matching funds from the UTAS Foundation, to endow a scholarship in Leo’s name for a performing arts student. Current students of SVPA are hosting a fundraiser in September, aiming to raise an additional $5,000, which will be matched by the UTAS Foundation. Kate McPherson Scholarship Trust The Trustees of Kate McPherson’s estate and the UTAS Foundation have established a trust fund to fulfil Kate’s wishes to create a generous scholarship to allow students from Fiji to come to Tasmania to undertake postgraduate studies in education. Thanks to the generous support of the family and friends of Kate McPherson, the UTAS community, and the University of South Pacific in Fiji, the Kate McPherson Scholarship Trust has endowed a $20,000 scholarship. Course fees will also be waived. Surveying & Spatial Sciences Scholarships Program The Surveying and Spatial Sciences Scholarships Program has been established to encourage and assist undergraduate and postgraduate students with scholarships based on academic ability and/or particular need. Dr Tony Sprent has generously offered to match donations received through this 40th anniversary fundraising appeal up to a total of $25,000. To 30 June, this program had received $31,000 in donations.
