SCHOLARSHIP

FUTURE LEADERS OF BOSTON SCHOLARSHIP

DEAR MEMBERS,

On June 6, the Scholarship

Committee celebrated a successful year with our annual award ceremony, during which we awarded five new scholars and three nonprofit organizations with funds restricted to college scholarships. Founded in 1977, the University Club Future Leaders of Boston Scholarship has awarded college scholarships to Boston Public School students on the basis of leadership, academic success, and service to community. The Club has supported nearly 130 students in pursuit of higher education, with scholars entering and succeeding across many industries, including law, medicine, business, technology, and social impact.

This year, the Board of Governors and the Scholarship Committee made a strategic and thoughtful decision to expand the impact of the Scholarship Fund. In addition to awarding scholarships directly to Boston students, the Club partnered with three mission-aligned nonprofit organizations to provide a grant restricted to scholarships. Partner organizations are required to select Boston students who fit the eligibility criteria of the Future Leaders of Boston Scholarship. These organizations are Boston Collegiate Charter School, Codman Academy, and SquashBusters. Through this new initiative, the Scholarship Fund tripled the annual number of students we are supporting. I am pleased to share that the Club will support 16 students entering college in September in addition to 20 students continuing their education.

In addition to college funds, the Ambassador Program pairs each scholar with a mentor on the Scholarship Committee for support and guidance during their college years. Ambassadors check in with students each semester and provide access to networking opportunities and general advice as students persist in college and enter the workforce. Looking ahead, the Committee hopes to plan several workshops in the fall to connect all Club members

with our new partner organizations and current scholars to engage in topics such as career readiness, professional skill-building, and career exploration.

Thank you for your continued annual contributions to the Scholarship Fund. The Club has impacted many outstanding students over the past 45 years, and I look forward to expanding opportunities for the full membership to engage with the incredible scholars and organizations we support in future.

THE ROOF DECK

In June, we officially unveiled

our brand-new Roof Deck! This is the perfect spot to grab a drink after work or head up for a night cap after dinner in the Dining Room. We are also hosting UClub events on the roof, so be on the lookout for event registrations. There will be bar service on weeknights pending weather conditions and event schedules. Keep an eye out for the Daily Dining Special in your inbox for Roof Deck hours and any closures of the space.

The new Fitness space is now open! We

are thrilled to share this brand-new, stateof-the-art facility with our membership. The 8,500+ square foot gym hosts a vast range of cardio and strength training equipment, cross-training area, and a group exercise studio. Head to page 11 for more details from the Fitness department!

The epic match of the night featured the 5 games, two-hour match in the Open Draw – Will Ahmed and Brandon McLaughlin coming from 1-2 down against Charlie Humber and Will Hartigan to win 3-2. The match featured some outrageous points punctuated by incredible rallies and retrieves leaving all players physically spent at its conclusion.

The Women’s Open was once again captured by the well-tuned team of Alli Rubin and Fernanda Rocha 3-0. Both players displayed great shooting and ball movement thwarting the team of Mary McKee and Serena Fagan in the final.

ON THE SQUASH COURT

CELEBRATION NIGHT FOR STEPHEN QUIGLEY

On Thursday, May 11th, the doubles court were reserved for a special night to honor Stephen Quigley for his masterful work arranging morning doubles games this past season. Stephen selflessly organizes this group each week, sometimes putting together 10 or more games.

In addition to an honorary position on the squash staff, the group gifted him an embroidered bag with his initials and “Ringmaster” for his efforts!

Thanks Stephen – the Club is one lucky place to have you as its morning doubles organizational ambassador!

AM DOUBLES LEAGUE – COMES DOWN TO THE WIRE

The AM Doubles League completed their season on June 8th in spectacular form with the outcome being decided in the final week with the Brew Crew squad edging the Toast and Boast team by 11 points – one of the closest contests in years! Going into the last two weeks the teams were separated by only one point.

Brew Crew, who for most of the season trailed, took the final four matches to earn the title. The 62-match schedule started in January featuring two teams of 17 players each that played competitive matches at 6:30am on weekday mornings.

The bet – the losing team buys both teams dinner at the University Club – took place Wednesday June 14th with informal doubles games and superb food and drinks in the new space next to the Pro Shop. Thanks to the chef and his team for great eats. Also, many thanks to the respective captains for their organization - Alli Rubin/ Cam Rahbar and Todd Manley/Julie Koenig.

ROYAL ENGINEER SQUASH CLUB VS. UNIVERSITY CLUB

The Royal Engineer Squash Club passed through Boston on Thursday June 8th, playing a match against the University Club. This friendly match featured twelve matches ranging in skill levels. Afterwards, the group collected in the new space courtside for pizza and beer and many shared laughs and fun.

FITNESS & WELLNESS

FITNESS NOW OPEN

After more than ten years of dreaming, planning, and designing we can actually say, “FITNESS IS OPEN!” This brand new, state-of-the-art, 8,500+ square foot facility is home to 30+ cardio pieces, strength equipment to fit a variety of needs, functional training areas, and a group exercise studio. As with any new constructions there are still some finishing touches to be completed but members are now welcome to work out in the fourth floor space.

We will be taking the summer to use the space and figure out how we can make it even better! The intention was to allow for open space when we launch so that we can determine what other pieces of equipment are necessary to match the needs of our membership. The space is designed to evolve with our growing needs.

In-person Group Fitness classes are now available! We are launching a light schedule for the summer and will be adding classes for a full launch in September. Some zoom classes will remain through the summer but by September you can expect all classes to be in person. One of the most beautiful functions of the group fitness studio is the ability to access it for your personal workouts. While classes are not in session the doors will remain open to welcome you into the space. I personally want to thank everyone involved in the planning and execution of this project. This was no easy feat, but with the vision of this Club the unthinkable was made possible!

GROUP FITNESS

With the gorgeous new fitness studio in our new space, we are now migrating some of our group fitness classes over to in person (Don’t worry, not all of them just yet!) Keep checking out our Group Fitness Schedule on the member side of our website - we’ll continue to keep it updated as we adjust.

THE LITTLE THINGS ADD UP

Free time feels as though it’s harder and harder to come across. Finding the time to “work out” on top of our regular obligations can seem like a daunting and,at some points, even an unachievable task.

Understand that doing something is always better than doing nothing ! Get up, go for a 10 minute walk. Get on the floor, do 3 sets of pushups. It’s not a huge time commitment. No gym is even necessary, just put forth an honest effort to keep moving towards your goals.

Remember, the little things add up over time to becoming a better version of yourself.
