Chiller-in-Chief How Cyndi Ramirez-Fulton’s passion project Chillhouse turned into the ultimate hub for self-care.

UGirl Fall 2018 3

Letter from the Editor

A

s I lay in bed about to fall asleep, the light from my iPhone illuminates the designer bags under my eyes. My alarm goes off the next morning, and I immediately grab my phone to re-enter the digital world with my eye mask half on. Whether I am on my phone, hanging out with friends or doing work, there is always something to do in college. Without a single moment to myself, I realize I rarely take time to treat my mind (pg 24). It is easy to say “I am going to workout three times a week, eat healthy and learn how to meditate.” But in reality, implementing self-care habits into your life is a process. Self-care doesn’t just happen overnight, just ask our coverstar Cyndi Ramirez-Fulton, founder of Chillhouse (pg 40). You have to be patient and start by introducing one habit into your routine at a time. When I interviewed Madison Utendahl, the director of content and social at the Museum of Ice Cream, in October, she shared her ultimate secret to self-care (pg 20). Almost every night, she turns her phone on airplane mode to unplug and rest. As someone who struggles to clear my mind, I decided to give it a try. On day 1 of my experiment, I turned my

phone on airplane mode before I went to bed, but woke up feeling anxious about being offline. Although I turned airplane mode off shortly after, I was not discouraged. Since then, I have continued to practice this habit and have come to love the disconnection. Instead of wasting time on my phone the second I wake up, I get out of bed and hop into the shower. I listen to my downloaded Spotify playlist as I moisturize my skin (pg 12) and accentuate my natural curly hair with gel (pg 8). While being present in my morning routine, I am not thinking about my endless to-do list. My mind is clear, and I feel at peace. After making my bed, I finally turn airplane mode off. Although the messages, notifications and emails start to roll in, I am ready to begin the day. From stories about aromatherapy (pg 14) and flotation therapy (pg 23) to self-care secrets (pg 22) and treat yourself rituals (pg 44), I hope this issue motivates you to step up your self-care routine. Special shoutout to Katie Intner; I wouldn’t have been able to do this without you! I would also like to thank the rest of UGirl’s insanely creative and talented team, especially Sarah Thomas, Victoria Giannola and Erin Eagle.

Runway Ready Brows Amp up your arches with these tried-and-tested tricks.. by QUINN GAWRONSKI

Fashion and beauty gurus alike know that the over-plucked and super arched brows of the 2000s died long ago. Now, a full and natural eyebrow à la Cara Delevigne graces every runway and magazine cover. Despite the effortless appearance of this brow shape, most people don’t wake up with the eyebrows of a supermodel. Whether UGirls are blessed with naturally full brows, or have hair as sparse as Homer Simpson, a little shaping and defining goes a long way.

TWEEZE If you are comfortable around a pair of tweezers, brush your brows straight up and pluck outlying hairs. Resisting the urge to overpluck can be difficult, but keep in mind that your eyebrow has a natural arch. Only clean up random hairs for an effortless look. Feel free to consult a waxing studio or threader if plucking your brows induces anxiety. Most salons will follow your natural brow shape unless specified otherwise. To find an arch suited for you, use a straight object, like a makeup brush, and set one end on the tip of your nose. Point the other end toward your brow, crossing in front of your pupil. Where the other end of the brush lays is where your arch should be the highest.

DRAW

CONCEAL

Once your brow is in shape, fill in sparse areas and sharpen the structure with the aid of makeup. When picking a shade for your brows, stick to neutral undertones instead of warm undertones to avoid an orange appearance. Blondes can rock a shade darker than their hair, while brunettes should typically stick to a shade lighter. For makeup novices, opt for a brow pencil or powder and use a light hand to keep clown eyebrows at bay. If you are more advanced, apply Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Dipbrow Pomade with a flat eyebrow brush. Where eyebrow product is concerned, generally less is more.

Whichever product you apply, amp up your brow game by incorporating concealer into your routine. Make sure you have a concealer one shade lighter than your skin tone before grabbing a small, flat synthetic brush. Not only does this pro-tip clean up messy brow product, but also highlights and defines your bone structure, resulting in a sleek and polished look.

3. Highlight underneath the brow with concealer.

1. Begin by drawing a line at the base of your brow. Use short, soft strokes angled away from your nose to mimic brow hairs.

4. Blend the product downward and onto the eyelid. 2. Go back in with a clean mascara wand to blend extra product and soften the look. The front of your brow should be lighter than the tail. 10 UGirl Fall 2018

Q&A

by TAYLER BRADFORD At 26 years old, Tessa Barton has already made her mark on the fashion world through her Instagram @tezza, blog, editing app and book InstaStyle. After studying photography and fashion in college, she moved from Salt Lake City, Utah to New York City. At first, Barton decided to start a blog to showcase her photography. What started out as a personal blog turned into a multi-faceted brand with 623k followers – and growing. Barton spoke to UGirl about life as an influencer and the self-care habits she lives by. UGirl: When and why did you start your blog? Tessa Barton: I have been blogging for over eight years. My blog started out when I was a photographer. I have my Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography, so I wanted to showcase my work and be able to tell more about the story behind the images. Yes, this was during pre-Instagram days; I am ancient. As the years went by, I began to mix in travel guides, fashion inspiration, outfit details, etc. I love how it serves as a journal of my life and my growth. Everything I do for my brand now has an insane amount of thought behind it. I work with intention and try to push myself out of my comfort zone daily. UG: What is your favorite and least favorite part about being a social media influencer? TB: All of the amazing people I’ve gotten to meet and work with! I’ve found some of my closest friends, and it is amazing to work alongside people I have looked up to for such a long time. But the most stressful part is having to be on all the time and constantly pushing yourself everyday. There’s always an opportunity to grow, which is exciting, but it also adds stress and pressure. It’s hard sometimes to enjoy the things that are successful and the little victories. I need to remind myself to slow down and pat myself on the back now and then! UG: How do you de-stress? TB: On top of spending time with friends and family, I play music to let out my creativity and express my feelings.

It’s such a release! When you express your creativity, you release emotion in a healthy way. You can put this energy into something rather than keep it inside, and let it build up. UG: What does self-care mean to you? TB: For me, self-care boils down to listening to your body and checking in with your emotional state. When you slow down and give your inner-self full attention, you allow acceptance and understanding into your life. This helps me straighten out my thoughts and emotions and keeps my head more clear and creative. You also need to have love and appreciation for yourself before anything else. This love will come through in the way you handle and interact with others. It’s so important to invest in yourself above all. UG: What self-care habits do you live by? TB: I always meditate and step away from worldly things like the Internet. Always, always, always drink water, breathe deeply, exercise, go outside and enjoy the simple things in life. I stay inspired by looking in new places, walking around New York City, going to art shows, watching documentaries and looking at how other people see the world. UG: What advice do you have for college graduates looking to enter the fashion industry? TB: Keep pushing, ask questions, be curious and reach out to people you want to work with. Find the reason you really want to do it, and hone in on what inspires you- that will carry you more than wanting to do it just because it sounds cool or once was interesting to you. People change; don’t be afraid to experiment with what drives you.

Feel Good Self-Care Essentials We rounded up seven ways essential oils can get you through this season of stress by MEGHAN MANICCIA

Whether you are prepping for a presentation or gearing up for the Syracuse tundra, you will start to feel super stressed. With finals around the corner, we need to incorporate self-care habits into our daily routines ASAP. UGirl has found the perfect solution: Essential Oils. Known as an alternative medicine, essential oils offer several beneficial properties for your mind, body and skin.

Aromatherapy DIFFUSER. Transport your body and relax your

mind with the help of a diffuser. Each diffuser operates differently. Some use water while others use heat, so be sure to follow the directions. You can purchase a diffuser for as little as $14 on Amazon, perfect for UGirls on a budget!

TRY → Bergamot: Feeling anxious? Unwind with the citrus scent of bergamot to lower your stress levels. TRY → Rosemary: For your next exam, check out rosemary oil to sharpen your focus and improve your memory.

STEAM TREATMENT. If there’s one thing we

can all agree on, it’s that Syracuse winters are brutal. To combat the inevitable cold, create your own athome steam treatment. Soothe your congestion, sinus infection or allergies by placing three to seven drops of essential oil into a bowl of hot water. Hold your face above the water. Place a towel over your head to trap the steam in for five to 10 minutes. As you inhale the vaporized oil through your nose, keep your eyes closed and enjoy immediate relief.

TRY → Eucalyptus and Lemon: These essential oils mixed together with steam will result in cleansing and anti-inflammatory benefits.

BOTTLED SPRAY. UGirls on-the-go may not

always have time to indulge in a diffuser session. No need to worry! You can still achieve an emotional ~zen~ with this easy DIY. Mix 10 to 15 drops of your favorite essential oil(s) with one ounce of water in a spray bottle. Whether you spray your custom scent in your room, mist it onto your pillowcases or use it as a body spray, you cannot go wrong! TRY → Lavender, Rose and Clary Sage: Alleviate your stress and clear your mind with this soothing combination.

14 UGirl Fall 2018

Topical BATH. Channel your inner Chandler Bing by dropping

your favorite oil into the bath! Combine up to 12 drops of your go-to essential oil with one teaspoon of whole milk, vegetable oil or honey. Pour the mixture into the water right before you step in. Complete your ultimate bath experience with candles and your favorite playlist. TRY → Lavender: This oil is known for its relaxing benefits. If you suffer from insomnia, try a lavender scented bath to improve your sleep habits.

SELF-MASSAGE. Apply an essential oil to your skin during a self-massage, using your body as the diffuser. Your body naturally heats up the essential oil, and releases a scent into the air. Rubbing an oil onto your feet and heels will help with Syracuse winter dryness.

TRY → Tea tree: The perfect ingredient for a calming massage oil. TRY → Peppermint: If you are suffering from a major hangover, try rubbing peppermint onto your temples to reduce headache symptoms.

LOTION. Step up your moisturizer game by

incorporating essential oils into your lotion. Add six to 15 drops (cut this measurement in half if you have sensitive skin) of oil to one ounce of unscented body or face lotion. Stir thoroughly before application. This method also uses the heat of your skin to diffuse the essential oil, allowing you to inhale its fragrance and reap the benefits.

TRY → Sandalwood: Mixing this oil into your lotion will induce peaceful feelings. Give it a try when you’re feeling stressed or depressed.

Ingestion DRINKING. Essential oils are powerful, so you only

need to mix one or two drops for a direct benefit. Ingesting oils can be dangerous if you do not read the directions and ingredients on the bottle. According to Mind Body Green, even oils that claim to be 100 percent pure could be made from plants grown with pesticides, harvested at the wrong time, grown in a laboratory, or distilled with improper techniques. Before use, make sure to check the list of FDA approved essential oils that are generally recognized as safe.

TRY → Peppermint and Lemon: These oils contain internal benefits such as reduction of stomach pain and detoxification. Both can be taken with water, but be sure to only use one to two drops.

Dilution 101 • • • • • •

Essential oils are highly concentrated substances. To use safely, they should be diluted in water, a skin care oil or an unscented lotion. Dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil. The term carrier oil is derived from their purpose in carrying the essential oil onto the skin. Try out grapeseed oil or sweet almond oil. Diluting the essential oil helps prevent an allergic reaction, especially with prolonged use. When combining, use about 20 drops of essential oil for every ounce of carrier oil. If you’d rather use water instead of a carrier oil, shake the mixture well before applying it to your skin. For all you dog owners, be sure to always dilute your oils and use them sparingly when near dogs as their sense of smell is much stronger than humans.

Global UGirls You are strolling through the sunlit, cobblestone streets of a foreign city when you smell the buttery aroma of pastries emanating from a quaint bakery. Even though you may want to give into the temptation, you know you should be eating healthy. Resisting the urge may seem impossible, but we’re here to help. Four Global UGirls shared their top tips on maintaining a healthy diet abroad. by NICOLE VALINOTE

Strasbourg, France

From camembert and brie cheese platters to warm tarte flambée and croissants, this Alsacian city is filled with tempting foods. In SU’s Strasbourg program, students are paired with host families who provide breakfast and dinner. While breakfast is typically a light meal, like bread and butter, dinner is heavier because it often includes courses of salad, entrées, cheese and dessert. Caroline Cox, a junior public relations and political science major, said “Try to eat as healthy as you can at lunch because that’s the only meal you will have a choice over. But don’t deprive yourself. You’re only there once, so you should still experience what you want to eat.” Global UGirl Rec: Instead of indulging in sandwiches on big baguettes, head to grocery store Carrefour to pick up healthy alternatives, like salad and fruit. For a midday pick-me-up, store healthy snacks in the SU Center’s fridge to limit your sugary pastry intake.

London, England

Let’s be real, England’s rainy capital is painfully expensive. Although you may want to treat yourself to fish and chips, there are cheaper and healthier alternatives to eating out at the pubs. Because SU students live in apartments with kitchens, they can easily cook meals with fresh ingredients, said Sarah Mitchell, a senior majoring in environmental and interior design. “Grocery stores in London don’t have aisles and aisles of junk food, so it’s really easy to find healthy foods,” Mitchell added. Global UGirl Rec: For those days you’re craving a meal out with your friends, look no further than London Grind! This trendy spot is the perfect place to grab a healthy brunch, like avocado toast and smoked salmon.

Madrid, Spain

Eating healthy is not difficult in Madrid, according to Elizabeth Pierre, a senior child and family studies major. Students in the Madrid program stay with host families, so breakfast and dinner are provided. Typical dinners included paella and seafood, Pierre said. Unlike other host family situations, Pierre noted that these meals are well-balanced with different food groups. Madrid’s Mediterranean diet includes a lot of fruits, vegetables and seafood, which makes it easy to order healthy meals at local restaurants. Global UGirl Rec: Check out 100 Montaditos for lunch. The menu features 100 meals, including healthy options, that are all one euro.

Florence, Italy

When studying abroad in Florence, students enjoy meals cooked with fresh ingredients and escape from processed foods, said Alanna Masciarelli, a senior environmental and interior design major. Students in Florence live with host families who serve breakfast, typically consisting of nutella and cookies. Students are encouraged to speak with their host families about the food served if they would prefer healthier options, like cereal, yogurt and fruit. Masciarelli’s family cooked several dinner courses from scratch, including risotto, pasta and tiramisu. For a departure from the typical pasta and pizza dishes expected in Italy, Masciarelli recommends focusing on having a balanced lunch, so you can enjoy dinner. Global UGirl Rec: Shake Café, a healthy restaurant similar to Original Grain, offers smoothies, salads, avocado toast and grain bowls.

Ditch your go-to Starbucks coffee order for a hot or cold tea. Not only are herbal teas filled with antioxidants that provide energy and promote healing, but they also boost your immune system. The best part? The benefits of adding tea to your daily self-care routine are long-lasting. With the New Year right around the corner, now is the perfect time to incorporate tea into your diet and begin naturally improving your health.

Matcha Tea

Green Tea

Looking to detox? Matcha tea rids impurities and toxins from your system. It is also a great alternative to caffeine

Green tea is the solution to all your problems. It aids in oral health, increases brain activity, reduces allergies and burns fat.

Black Tea Although black tea can’t cure a broken heart, it can boost your heart health and cardiovascular system. It also has more caffeine than green tea.

Peppermint Tea Cure your hangover with peppermint tea, as it relieves bloating, cramping and stomach discomfort. Not to mention, the peppermint leaf prevents vomiting and nausea.

Hibiscus Tea Oh no, a UTI. Hibiscus tea is known to ease the pain associated with urinary tract infections. It also protects the liver and is considered a natural antidepressant.

White Tea Instead of caking on makeup, try drinking white tea. The high antioxidant content will help clear your skin and keep it looking fresh.

Chamomile Tea Something keeping you up at night? Chamomile tea is traditionally used as a natural sleep aid. It helps with relaxation and eases anxiety. UGirl Fall 2018 17

Secrets to Self-Care Four UGirls spill how they take self-care beyond a face mask. by ABIGAIL STERLING

Spray On Some Self-Care “In the morning, I spray my face using rose water spray before applying my morning skincare routine. Not only is it refreshing, but it also allows the other products I use to sink into my skin better. At night, I use a lavender spray after I wash my face. Lavender is super calming, so it helps me alleviate stress and get a good night’s sleep.” -Caitlin Meagher, senior studio art major

Not Your Mother’s Skin-Care Routine “I love using a CBD facial oil called Cosmic Mermaid Soothing Beauty Oil from Rad Ritual as part of my skincare routine. It’s full of amazing natural properties that tone, moisturize and heal skin cells. My skin has never felt more hydrated and fresh!” -Ava Notkin, sophomore marketing and finance major

CBD oil comes from hemp, not marijuana, so it won’t get you high. But it will help improve different skin conditions like acne or eczema, according to Project CBD. Not only does CBD have antiinflammatory properties, but it also reduces oil production, making it the perfect tool to combat acne. Be sure to check with a dermatologist first to make sure it is safe for you. When ingested, Harvard Health Publishing reports that CBD is effective in helping relieve feelings of anxiety and insomnia. Further, studies have shown that CBD can help alter serotonin levels, the brain chemical that causes depression and anxiety.

Audiobooks: Your Own Life Coach “I love listening to the audiobook of ‘Girl Wash Your Face.’ It makes me feel in control of my own life. When I feel stressed with school, I feel more in control, calm and ready to conquer my work.” -Martina Maroun, senior retail management major

Girl Wash Your Face is a motivational book written by Rachel Hollis. If UGirls are looking for a relatable and inspirational guide to life, this audiobook is perfect for you. Purchase this book on Audible through Amazon so you can listen to it on your way to class!

Creativity Is Key “Being an artist allows me to engage my mind and hands simultaneously. When under stress, my pottery practice helps keep me centered, mindful and present in the moment in which I am creating. My attention is held by the evolving work in front of me. This is important to managing my stress and anxiety because I am not exhausting my thoughts on what is out of my control at the given moment.” -Isabel Souza, senior studio art major

Let’s Get Tanked Proven to decrease anxiety, flotation therapy is the new, unconventional way to de-stress. by HUNTER TARVIN

M

eghan Maniccia, 20, floats nude atop 3 feet of warm water surrounded by darkness and silence. But she’s not scared; this is her safe haven. As her eyes begin to close, her temporary escape from reality begins. “When I first entered the tank, I was nervous because I had no idea what to expect. As soon as I was able to let myself relax and close my eyes, I fell asleep and laid motionless,” says Maniccia, a junior advertising major at Syracuse University. This is Maniccia’s first session at the Bodymind Float Center in Syracuse, N.Y. Just a 10 minute drive from campus, this center offers flotation therapy in sensory deprivation tanks. The water in the lightless, soundproof pods contains roughly 800 pounds of epsom salt to increase its density, resulting in an effortless float. While the Bodymind Float Center may be new to Maniccia, the float tank dates back to the 1950s. American Physician John C. Lilly designed the first float tank in an attempt to clear his mind. Through his invention, he learned that the mind is most active and creative when isolated. During flotation, the mind reaches the same state of serenity as it does during meditation, according to the the Samadhi Tank Company.

After completing her first session, Maniccia says “Flotation therapy noticeably decreased my anxiety because I was able to be with myself and relax.” Her response is not atypical. In fact, David Berkman, an employee at the float center, says “It is a daily occurrence to have people come out of their float rooms and say things like, ‘I've never felt so relaxed in my life.’” Berkman enjoys working at the float center because he gets to see people’s reactions after they float. “We call it the ‘post float face,’” says Berkman. “It is a visible change in the person's appearance. They are calmer, and their eyes seem to have a shine to them.” As the president of CHAARG, a health and fitness club at SU, Maniccia usually de-stresses by working out. But this time she decided to try something a bit more unconventional. “I went to the float center because I had a very stressful week between exams and presentations,” she says. “I needed a way to de-stress and clear my mind.” Maniccia discovered the Bodymind Float Center in Syracuse through her roommate’s friend’s social media. “At first it was hard to clear my mind,” Maniccia says. “I wanted to try floatation therapy because it was something new to me and I love trying new things. I knew it was a good stress reliever and would also alleviate some

tension in my body from working out all the time.” She got the 90 minute Bodymind Float experience for $45 with the student discount. Flotation therapy increases one’s serenity and peacefulness while reducing anxiety and depression. According to a study by The National Center for Biotechnology Information, anxious participants experienced the largest decrease in anxiety levels post-float when compared to the nonanxious reference sample. In addition to alleviating anxiety, flotation therapy eases muscle pain as well as improves overall mood and well-being. The results of flotation therapy go far beyond reaching a certain level of relaxation. “We've had a few people remark that their float was the first pain-free period they've had in many years, since a car accident or other trauma,” Berkman says. “It’s incredibly heartwarming and mind-blowing to hear that." When Maniccia’s 90 minutes pass, a signal rings; she knows it is time to wake up. She opens her eyes and begins to stretch her body. As she rinses her body, dries off and applies lotion, she feels a wave of calmness wash over her. “I felt recharged and ready to take on the day after my session,” she says. “My mind felt much more relaxed.”

With each strike, shout “no,” a keyword in women’s self-defense, according to Benedict. “‘No’ is not a question,” he says. “‘Stop,’ ‘don’t’ and ‘I don’t like that’ are not definitive enough. ‘No’ is a simple, quick word, and you can make it sound powerful. Ramirez-Fulton looked into existing relaxation brands. “One of the businesses that we looked at was Blind Barber, which is a bar that meets a barber[shop]. Men seem to have these kinds of spaces. There was not anything like that for women, and I was like, ‘Huh, why not?’” Ramirez-Fulton immediately drew inspiration from one of her own selfcare routines: manicures. Despite her busy schedule, she makes sure to treat herself to a manicure often. “It’s a fun way for me to express myself. If I don’t have my nails done, I feel like sh*t. If I have some cool nails, I feel extra great that week.” The cafe of Chillhouse stemmed from Ramirez-Fulton’s hospitality background, as she was a bartender in her early 20s. “I believe that relaxation starts with a drink in hand,” Ramirez-Fulton says. “The idea of Chillhouse is to modernize the spa industry.” And Chillhouse visitors seem to agree – even people who simply pass Chillhouse on the street. Past closing hours, a salon owner from San Diego walked by Chillhouse and waved at Ramirez-Fulton through the window. When Ramirez-Fulton opened the door, the woman told her she looked to Chillhouse for inspiration. “It’s those moments that strike me and [make me] feel a lot more motivated and empowered [about] everything we’ve accomplished so far,” Ramirez-Fulton says. Since opening Chillhouse, Ramirez-Fulton has redefined selfcare in her own life. In her 20s, she tried to tweak parts of her body like her stomach and butt with laser and body sculpting treatments, she says. But after founding Chillhouse, she quickly realized self-care and self-love are synonymous. She began to prioritize feeling her best, instead looking her best. “Finding what works for you and creating a system for yourself, in which you can maintain your sanity in any way, is what self-care should be for all of us,” she says. “That could be literally just breathing for 10 minutes every morning or going to the infrared sauna for a moment to close my eyes. Our goal at Chillhouse is to continue spreading that message.” From de-stressing tips to profiles on female entrepreneurs, The Chill 42 UGirl Fall 2018

Times works to spread the message of self-care to all visitors. “We evolved into editorial, which allowed us to create content around other areas of relaxation, like health-related issues,” Ramirez-Fulton says. “[Someone] may need relaxation because of anxiety, or a massage because of chronic back pain.” With the recent addition of Shop Chill – Chillhouse’s e-commerce element – Ramirez-Fulton has created the ultimate hub for relaxation online and offline. “We just wanted to push the message [of self-care] further along and show people that there are other ways to attain relaxation,” Ramirez-Fulton adds. “This felt like a natural next step for us. As a business, [we] wanted to see what people are gravitating to and what categories they think of us in as a whole. This helps us collect data to create Chillhouse products some day down the line.” As Ramirez-Fulton walks to the back of Chillhouse, passing a wall full of white shelves aesthetically curated with Shop Chill products, she stops to take a sip of iced tea and a deep breath. “I feel empowered by self-care because I live it every day,” Ramirez-Fulton says. “For me, as a woman – not only as a woman, but as a business owner – I feel empowered by the word because I live it and talk about it every day. It’s what I embody. I’m creating experiences, products and content that hopefully allows people to feel empowered through self-care, as well.” Sitting on the velvet blush-colored couch, surrounded by plants and candles, Ramirez-Fulton feels calm and right at home.

I met a guy at a frat party and went back with him to his apartment. We started hooking up and mid-sex he asked if he could film me giving him a blowjob. I, of course, declined. After we finished, he asked if I could give him a blowjob while he played Fortnite. I realized it was time for me to go.

As a sophomore, I went home from Lucy’s with a Syracuse football player. I fell and gashed my knee on the way to South Campus, but was so drunk I forgot it instantly. Mid-sex, he sees blood all over the sheets and got extremely angry, too angry if you ask me. Maybe it was because he had a girlfriend. Unhappy with his reaction and confused about the blood, I ran out of his apartment. I took the bus home, but was so blacked out that I got off at the wrong stop. My phone was dead, so I got lost for what felt like hours in the frigid cold of mid-February. Desperate, practically naked and afraid, I approached a car at a stop sign, begging them to drive me back to Booth Hall. Yes, I’m aware I could have been brutally murdered. My worried roommates greeted me at 4 a.m. and patched up my gashed knee. Thankful to be alive, honestly.

Luck of the Irish Isabel Senior When I went abroad to Italy, I hooked up with this guy on St. Patty’s Day in Dublin. We couldn’t find the condom after he finished, so I just figured it was under the bed or somewhere in the sheets. A couple days later back in Italy, I found it IN me. Yes, the condom was literally inside me for over 48 hours. I freaked out, so I researched what Plan B was called in Italian. The lady working there judged me soooo hard. I was so embarrassed that I never showed face at that Farmacia again. One month later, my period was late. WTF would’ve happened if I got pregnant abroad?! I bought a pregnancy test from a different Farmacia. My heart was beating out of my chest as I waited for the results... I was not pregnant! I celebrated with a three euro glass of wine.

Juulia Junior I was hooking up with this guy and things seemed to be going great, until I saw a cloud of smoke coming from behind me. I turned around and saw him hitting his Juul mid-sex. I asked him if he was Juuling. He said “Yes” and didn’t even offer me a hit.

Rapunzel Junior After a party, a guy and I went back to my place. We were laying in bed, and he was stroking my hair. Next thing I know, he’s holding my extension in his hand. He said, “What is this?” I immediately grabbed it and hid it in my shoe. I said “It’s nothing.” #Speechless UGirl Fall 2018 47
