What is a concussion?

It is a traumatic brain injury where a blow to the head, neck or body results in forces This leads to a range of clinical symptoms (headache, dizziness, confusion, etc ) and A concussion may result in a loss of consciousness but often it does not MRI and cannot detect the small changes that occur in the brain as a result of concussions,

For more information on concussion: cdc gov/headsup | odh ohio gov/youthconcussions | UHhospitals org/Concussion

If a concussion is suspected, does the athlete have any of the following?

• Breathing problems

• Unconscious one minute or longer

• Neck pain, numbness or tingling

• Seizure

• Worsening headache

• Worsening confusion

• Numbness or tingling in arms or legs

• >1 episode of vomiting

• Deformity of the skull

1. Encourage brain rest, avoid additional injury, and encourage progressive return to normal activity once tolerated by:

• No activities that could cause other concussions (sports, bike riding, etc ) until cleared by a doctor

• Light activity, such as walking, is encouraged, with increased exercise after 48 hours

• Do not engage in strict rest or bed rest in a dark room – this worsens recovery

• Get a good night’s sleep; no late nights

• You do not need to wake the athlete every hour

2. Avoid loud noises, bright lights, and overly stimulating activity by:

• Limit screen time, including TV, cell phones, video games and computers

• Limit any activity that requires extended periods of concentration to 20 – 30 minute blocks, such as homework or reading

• Stop any activity if symptoms worsen

Symptoms usually resolve in the initial weeks after injury. Light symptom exacerbation is not concerning, but if symptoms significantly worsen during or after an activity, stop and wait 24 hours before trying again

Sports Neuropsychology

UH Drusinsky Sports Medicine Institute takes a three-part approach to concussion management through focusing on prevention, recognition and treatment of these injuries Athletes are encouraged to undergo baseline testing prior to the season, and if they sustain a concussion, testing is repeated to identify when symptoms have returned to normal and an athlete is ready for a return to sport, school and other activities Should complications occur in recovery, expert neuropsychologists who specialize in concussion evaluation and testing will evaluate the patient, which can assist with treatment plan development, school recovery plans and evaluating responses to treatments

Our neuropsychologists are specially trained in sports concussion and have years of experience managing concussions at all levels of sport, including the use of tools such as Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT™ Concussion Testing) Further evaluation into memory changes, concentration problems and other thinking/behavioral changes associated with concussion can be made through more comprehensive evaluation by neuropsychologists This comprehensive evaluation helps to guide treatment recommendations, monitors an athlete’s response to treatments, can provide a fuller understanding of whether an athlete with a concussion has fully recovered, and can assist with detailed recommendations for return to school and other activities

Sports Psychology

Many children and adolescents have emotional difficulties, and regrettably, many of them never get the help they need Our team at the UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry provides a full scope of psychiatric evaluation and treatment services, either directly or through referral to affiliated staff and programs Our division offers an environment on the leading edge of treatment, research and education, with a clear focus on children and adolescents

Individual evaluation determines the best treatment for each child, and the first step we take is always getting to know your child Unlike standard medical illnesses such as colds or earaches, emotional problems don’t always present clear-cut symptoms However, you may become aware of behavioral or emotional inconsistencies that may be a cause of concern, including sudden anger or outbursts, reduced level of communication, unexplained drop in school performance or disinterest in formerly enjoyed activities

You know your child better than anybody else does, so use the above to help determine if a call to the doctor is necessary Remember that many emotional conditions begin with these types of symptoms and can grow more serious if left untreated Based on the needs of your child, treatment options could include individual, group and family psychotherapy; individualized behavior therapy; psycho-pharmacotherapy; or a combination of these . We can help most difficulties by treating your child on an outpatient basis If a higher level of care should be needed, we can help your child through affiliated programs .

Through our partnership with the Cleveland Browns, our team physicians have published research on elite athletes that utilizes the most up-to-date techniques to provide a safer sporting environment Investigating topics – such as how changes in active workload between player positions relate to the onset of injury – has led to significant contributions to research in the area of optimizing individualized player performance With the technological advancements prevalent in the world today, UH Drusinsky Sports Medicine Institute is at the forefront of integrating wearable technology and objective biomarkers into understanding athletic performance and the true nature of injuries at the physiological and metabolic level

It is the goal of the UH Drusinsky Sports Medicine Institute Research Program to translate the knowledge and findings that we observe at the professional and elite level into training protocols that can be used by coaches, athletic trainers and parents in order to improve upon our community’s local athletes Our research initiative is a collaborative effort that breaks down the orthopedic sports medicine barrier to include multiple scientific specialties, allowing UH to produce an influx of ideas that will continue to grow and contribute to the advancement of this field worldwide
