Health professionals often suffer from stress owing to the distinctive and working conditions typically found in hospitals. Pressure at work can be constructive leading to improved output. On the other hand, when this pressure becomes extreme, it has a negative impact. The individual perceive himself as being unable to cope and not to possess the necessary

skills to fight with their stress. In literature, it is named as occupational stress and some where it is called as Burnout Syndrome. Burnout was first introduced into the literature by Freuden Berger in the 1974. He defined burnout as a state of fatigue or frustration that result from professional relationships that failed to produce the expected rewards.

PREVALENCE Nurses working in Tertiary hospitals are under constant stress because of crowded work environment, the severity of patients’ conditions and working schedules designed as shifts. In addition to these factors, problems

arising

relationships,

from

inadequate

professional hospital

resources, dealing with patient and their families, unsafe working environment and inability to spare some time to familial and social relations further escalate the stress. With this, emergence of stress can also be precipitated by personality traits. According to Ustundag, M (2012) people who are perfectionist, idealistic,

competitive and

impatient and having diďŹƒculty in developing empathy and are at higher risk of developing burn out. As per labour force survey (2013) conducted in United Kingdom, nurses are at highest prevalence rate of occupational stress.

Common FACTORS Nurses’ face emotionally charged situations regularly and encounter intense situations and conflict in the workplace while trying to make appropriate and safe decisions for their patients. Most nurses also exhibit aggression, depression and exhaustion, less quality relationships with peers, subordinates and supervisors is also observed due to overburdened work. Nurses turn over, frequent sick leaves, absenteeism, substance abuse, late comings, transfer to another units are some of the observations that we usually witness in our workplaces.

Strategies to OVERCOME STRESS We will recommend following tactics to prevent and manage burnout in nurses at individual level. First, determine causes of burnout and eliminate them or transform them into less stressful forms for e.g. Sound emitted from certain monitors and devices is sometimes enough to create the stress and it is essential to make necessary adjustments to the monitors to minimize the audible sounds.

Stress Occurs When Perceived Pressure on an Individual Exceeds Ability to Maintain Resilience Everyone should know their work responsibilities to minimize carrying out too much burden. Reframe your way of thinking, modify your behavior and be assertive. Set limits to prevent overextending in personal and professional work to your commitments. After a tough and busy shift, find a person to vent out or confide your feelings. Staff should necessarily take vocations and should engage in activitie outside workplace with your social friends and families.

Consume healthy diet and take out some time for exercise, meditation and for religious rituals. Use humor as a distraction during course of the work. Sta should practice self-awareness by evaluating after every emotional outburst. Appreciate and acknowledge yourself on your achievements and strengths. At the extreme situation, it is advisable to consult psychologist so that prompt action can be taken to stabilize emotional wellbeing.

Finally keep work and personal life separated. To summarize, it is important to investigate the reasons of burnout and to identify potential solutions to address the phenomenon.
