Prepared for the worst ... with the best. Greetings, from my home office, where I never imagined just months ago would become my primary professional headquarters. We are all in such a profoundly changed world since last I wrote, that it’s difficult to find the words to summarize what’s happened – and what’s happening – at University Liggett School. And while this letter is not the place to pore over all of the intense collaboration and execution necessary for our school to rise up to the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic, it is the place for me to highlight one of the most essential factors to our success. Our outstanding, innovative and deeply committed teachers.

Campaign Steering Committee

O

In my last letter, I introduced you to the final fundraising effort of our $50 million Sure Foundations campaign. In that piece, I celebrated our Faculty of Excellence and encouraged you to learn more about them and consider supporting their excellence with a commitment of your own. And while we could never have known that only months later, they would be called upon to reimagine their classrooms and curriculum in an entirely digital format, I realize now we were prepared for the worst all along…because we are so fortunate to have the best faculty anywhere as our own.

When news of the pandemic made clear that this was a crisis we would have to respond to in a decisive fashion, our faculty surrendered their spring breaks to ensure that when students returned to their virtual learning environment on March 30th, they would feel noticed, supported and energized. The feedback we have received from not only current families, but others in our extended local community, is that our University Liggett School faculty has created something incredibly special in this era of separation – meaningful, deeply engaging togetherness. In the Lower School, classroom and resource teachers schedule group and individual check-ins throughout the day and employ tools, such as See-Saw and Google Classroom, to give feedback on student work that is completed at each student’s own pace. In the Middle and Upper School, students virtually “follow” their normal daily schedule. At the appointed time a class or advisory would normally meet, they join a Zoom session hosted by that particular teacher. The Remote Learning Program, and the moments of unexpected magic within, have brought tears of awe and gratitude to more than one of us on the executive team, as well as to the students and parents who were just as vital to making our plans work. Scavenger hunts, hand-delivered science kits for kitchen gem digs, blinded Lego building competitions, gym class challenges, sidewalk chalk chemistry continued on page 2

The Sure Foundations newsletter is produced electronically a couple of times a year. To be sure you are on the distribution list please contact Genevieve Valiot, advancement services manager, at gvaliot@uls.org or 313.884.4444, ext. 412.

equations, and our soon-to-launch virtual Celebration of Research to showcase our seniors’ research projects in a new, interactive format – these are only a handful of the ways our Faculty of Excellence have turned this challenge into opportunity, at every single corner. None of us were prepared, personally, to effortlessly handle the pandemic. We all struggled to adapt and create a life in the new normal, and still do. And while our faculty entered into their professions to educate, support and love our kids, they have discovered along with the rest of us, that they were prepared to elevate their talents no matter the environment. It’s clear that we were prepared for the worst, because we have the best.

Wu Family gift inspires generosity Our deeply committed faculty is the inspiration for the recently announced Clyde and Helen Wu Family $500,000 fund challenge grant. Clyde and Helen’s oldest son, David ‘83 and his family (Bernadine, Nicholas ‘14, Maddie ‘17) have experienced the impact of our outstanding faculty firsthand and can’t conceive of a more fitting conclusion to the Sure Foundation comprehensive campaign.

Please show your commitment to ensure these invaluable individuals are supported no matter what the future may hold, by donating to the Faculty of Excellence campaign today.

“ Of all the initiatives to support, the Faculty of Excellence phase of the campaign is the one we think will have the greatest impact,” said David.

“Ultimately, they are the ones who make the impact. As a ‘lifer’ alumnus of the school, my experience with amazing faculty is the reason my wife and I wanted to send our children there. The individual relationships I formed with teachers not only helped magnify my strengths, but also helped me develop a passion for subject areas I’d not been interested in previously.” The Wu family fund will match every dollar donated to the Faculty of Excellence campaign, up to the $500,000 mark. In recognition of the difference a University Liggett School teacher made in your life, and in honor of all our current faculty has done to ensure the continuity of an excellent education, now is the time to make a meaningful (or a second) gift to the campaign. To date, we have raised $129,000, and we are grateful for those who have made a gift and to those who will make a gift before the campaign’s conclusion in Summer 2020.

The good kind of sequel - repeat gifts! young man who had been such a good friend to his boys. His gift of $50,000 played a significant role in the success of the Thanasas Field campaign.

Some acts are better without a sequel, but not when it comes to acts of generosity. Bill Brusilow, parent to alumni Izzy ‘19, and Nick and Sam ‘17, has supported the Sure Foundations campaign with not one...not two...but three gifts and for different reasons. He says his desire to support the school multiple times is rooted in a single motivation: a sense of wanting to repay University Liggett School for the 10 years of phenomenal education his family received. “ I understand that what we paid in tuition didn’t pay for all that Liggett is delivering,” shared Bill. “A significant part of the value of my childrens’ Liggett education was paid for by donations from people who did not even know them, but who understood the value of this education. Like me now, those people were willing to ‘pay back’ their own experience to ensure that same quality education to current and future students. I could never make up the amount, but it’s why I have no problem contributing, even multiple times...and I still think I owe the school!”

3

And while he was motivated in general by the many gifts given to his children - small faculty-to-student ratio for better engagement and development of their intellectual and social skills - Bill and his wife Cindy were driven to support several phases of the Sure Foundations campaign that related back to his family’s specific experiences. His first gift, $10,000 to the capital campaign, was an initial show of support for the recently-launched $50 million comprehensive campaign. The school made outreach to him asking for his support of the new Healey Field, named for former Head of School Joe Healey, and he responded immediately with “yes.” Fast forward to 2017, when University Liggett School tragically lost a gifted and beloved student named George Thanasas -- who was also best friend to Bills’ two sons. When the time came to support the initiative to build and name a new Lacrosse field and scoreboard in George’s name, Bill was drawn to the opportunity to honor the

ADVANCING

OUR LEGACY

Finally, with the Sure Foundations campaign drawing to its conclusion in May of this year, the Faculty of Excellence campaign was yet another initiative that sparked an abundance of generosity, this time in the amount of $25,000. “Like all such schools, Liggett relies on its alumni, parents and other donors to close the gap between tuition and real costs,” said Bill, who wanted to play a part in securing the caliber of teachers for generations to come. The Faculty of Excellence campaign’s focus on the very people who make University Liggett School the warm, engaging, dynamic environment it is, rung true to the Brusilow family’s experience and for that they are extremely grateful.

SINCE 1878

So many ways to say, “I support ULS” University Liggett School offers a variety of ways and strategies to make your Sure Foundations gift, and make it meaningful. Some are for ease of giving, while others are to meet either the immediate needs of the school or ensure we thrive for years to come. Many people aren’t aware of all of our Sure Foundations giving channels, so in sharing them, we hope they may inform your consideration: CASH The simplest way is with a gift of cash. A gift of cash qualifies for a charitable income tax deduction in the year the gift is made. Gifts of cash can be made via cash, check or by mail. MULTI-YEAR GIVING You can make a pledge to support the campaign, which can be divided into payments for up to three years. Options for payments are quarterly, semi-annually, and annually. MATCHING GIFTS Many companies will match donations toward independent schools. Please check with your employer on their matching gift program which will often double your donation. Simply send us the form and will take care of the rest.

Are one of these “ways” the right way for you to support University Liggett School?

4

SECURITIES TRANSFER A gift of appreciated securities (stocks, bonds, or mutual funds shares) that you have held for more than one year is frequently the most economical way to make a gift. This entitles the donor to a charitable deduction for its full current market value, without paying the capital gains tax on the appreciation, which would be required if securities were sold for personal gain. Please transfer stock to University Liggett School’s account at Morgan Stanley. DONOR ADVISED FUNDS You can recommend a grant or recurring grants to support the campaign from your donor advised fund if you have one established.

PLANNED GIFTS You can help support the campaign by planning a gift in your estate. University Liggett School provides a variety of opportunities for planned gifts. Planned gifts made during the remainder of the campaign are extremely important and donors are recognized today for the gift that the school will receive in the future. There are many planned giving options to consider: bequests in your will or living trust, a charitable gift annuity, a charitable remainder trust, a charitable lead trust, retirement plan assets, life insurance policies and a remainder interest in your home.

IRA Make a gift to support the campaign with your IRA. If you are 70½ years old or older, you can take advantage of a simple way to benefit University Liggett School and receive tax benefits in return. You can give up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to a qualified charitable institution such as ours without having to pay income taxes on the money. This popular gift option is commonly called the IRA charitable rollover, but you may also see it referred to as a qualified charitable distribution, or QCD for short.

Questions about how to make a gift can be directed to Cressie Boggs, Director of Development 313.884.4444, ext. 413 or cboggs@uls.org.
