Making the most of your day Thank you for choosing to attend The University of Manchester’s undergraduate open day. By visiting our campus you will be able to gain a real insight into the student experience and life here. You will have the opportunity to find out more about the courses you are interested in, meet current staff and students, as well as attend sessions on key issues such as accommodation and student finance. We hope you enjoy your visit and take full advantage of the programme we have put together for you.

Stage 1 Decide which subject sessions you want to attend – you can attend more than one, so just look at the timetable on pages 2-13 to see which ones suit you best. If you are interested in Medicine, you will need to have pre-booked your place via the online registration form. You can also find out more about your subject by visiting the relevant Subject Exhibition Stand. These are also listed in the tinted boxes on pages 2-13. The stands will be open from 10am – 3.30pm and will provide you with the opportunity to speak with staff and current students on the course.

Stage 2 We have general information sessions running throughout the day covering topics such as Careers, Student Finance and Accommodation. Have a look at the full list on page 14-15 and fit the ones you want to attend around your subject sessions.

Planning your day In order to get the most from your day we recommend that you take time to plan your visit. There is a lot to see and do so we have included a visit planner at the back of this programme to make sure that you don’t miss any of the sessions that you want to attend. We do advise that where possible you arrive early to your sessions as some will be very popular; in these cases we may limit admittance to one student and one visitor or students only. As you make your way through the programme and start to plan your day, you will see that next to the building names/session venues there is a number in brackets. This indicates the building number as listed on the campus map on pages 32-33 and will help you to navigate around our campus. If you are having any problems on the day in finding a building please ask a member of our open day team dressed in purple and they will be happy to direct you. Please note: We are constantly improving our campus so there might be areas undergoing refurbishment during our open days.

Stage 3 Finally, we have a variety of Student Experience activities organised such as Campus Tours and Students’ Union Tours. We also have a Student Experience Exhibition, which will have information stands on areas from Sport and Student Finance to Accommodation and Study Abroad. For a full list see pages 22-25 and plan these activities around your other sessions.

Meet at the Accommodation Tour Bus Stop outside the Alan Turing Building (46) Time: Departing every 10 minutes from 10am – last bus will leave at 3:30pm. Duration: Please allow 1 hour 10 minutes (40 minute walking tour and a short return bus ride.) This does not include the time you will spend in the queue. At busy times you may have to queue for up to 1 hour and if required we may need to close the queue temporarily. Please note that we expect these tours to be popular with queues likely outside. If you experience queues we strongly recommend that you attend the Student Accommodation Panel Session as an alternative to this tour.

University of Manchester Students’ Union The Union Boasts over 480 societies and groups, from Archaeology and Amnesty to Politics and Panto. It helps to make decisions at the University, ensuring the interests of all students are represented and preserved. Whether you are a budding presenter or producer eager to hone your skills at the Union’s very own state of the art media studio, or a music fan wondering who is headlining the official welcome week party, come along and find out what the largest university students’ union in the UK has to offer you. If you are planning to stay at home whilst you study, the ‘Living at Home in Manchester’ stand in the Student Experience Exhibition will be of interest to you. All campus tours will be ending at the Union, where you will be able to have a look round the building. We’ve completed the biggest investment in buildings and facilities ever seen at a British university to create the best learning environment for our students. We are investing a further £1 billion in our campus. Please note that on Friday 17 June the 147 bus service will be operating its normal route and passengers are advised to get off at the Booth Street bus stop. If you are attending on Friday 17 June you will be emailed a voucher for free travel on this service. For visitors on Saturday 18 June, the 147 bus service will only be operating for the open day and will therefore only stop at Piccadilly Train Station and the University Campus (Brunswick Street). There is no voucher needed for travel on this day. Due to local traffic and the popularity of the service, please allow 45 minutes for the journey. A taxi ride from the station will take approximately 15 minutes and cost around £8.00.

Travelling from Victoria Station? Victoria Station is approximately 15 minutes’ walk from Piccadilly Gardens. Here there are frequent bus services to the Oxford Road Campus. Services include the 41, 42, 43, 142 and 143. Alternatively a tram service to Piccadilly Gardens runs from Victoria Station. You can then catch one of the bus services mentioned above. Taxis are also available outside the station.

Travelling from Oxford Road Station? To get to the Oxford Road Campus, go down the station approach to Oxford Road and turn right. The Campus is a 10 to 15 minute walk. Alternatively, you can catch a bus from outside the Palace Hotel to the Oxford Road Campus. Please speak to one of our Student Ambassadors who will be based at Oxford Road Station.

TOP TIP Please note: There are planned roadworks around the University this June which may cause delays.

Parking on campus There is extremely limited parking on campus, therefore we suggest that where possible visitors use public transport. We cannot guarantee that parking will be available on campus or in the immediate vicinity. In the event of a fire alarm you are requested to vacate the building you are in immediately by the nearest exit. Do not use the lifts and remain outside until informed by a member of staff that you may re-enter.

Overnight Accommodation If you are travelling far you might want to consider overnight accommodation in Manchester. The University has its own hotel in Fallowfield, Chancellors (www.chancellorshotel.co.uk) offering three star accommodation set in five acres of landscaped gardens and is only a short distance away from the University's Oxford Road Campus. Luggage Large items of luggage can be stored securely within the Whitworth Building (51), in the Whitworth Corridor Committee Room D. Please note, luggage must be collected by 4pm and unfortunately cannot be stored overnight.

Visitors with disabilities or special requirements The campus is generally accessible for all those with mobility difficulties, although there are a few areas where problems may occur. The main exhibition in the Whitworth Hall (50) is accessible by a lift in the Christie Building (58). If you have any additional support needs as a result of a disability, medical condition or specific learning difficulty, we will try to provide you with whatever assistance you require. It’s only a short walk away from Oxford Road so if you find that you have some spare time at the end of your visit today it is well worth a look. Named the ‘shopping capital of the North West’ there are high-street shops and individual boutiques that will suit every style and taste. There are also countless restaurants and bars to enjoy and relax in after a busy day. If you are looking for some culture you could visit one of the many galleries or museums in the city centre, or visit the University’s own Manchester Museum (44) or The Whitworth (84) which are free to enter. Whatever your interests, Manchester is certain to have something to suit you. These are our tips on making the most out of your day: • Our open days are very popular events and sessions can sometimes become full. To avoid disappointment we suggest where possible you arrive early. • Check the programme to see when sessions occur for your subject of interest. You can attend sessions for more than one subject if you want to. • Decide on your subject sessions first, and work the general sessions around these. • Some sessions may be limited to one student and one guest when busy. • Campus tours run all day – work these around your subject sessions. • Most sessions finish ten minutes before the scheduled finish time to allow you time to get to the next session. • Wear sensible shoes and bring a raincoat or umbrella. Bring a bag for any literature you might pick up. • Don’t forget to make time for lunch. There are plenty of outlets around campus that are open all day, so you can have lunch whenever suits you.
