POSTGRADUATE
TAUGHT COURSES
OPEN DAY
PROGRAMME OF EVENTS WEDNESDAY 25 NOVEMbER 2015
WElCOME TO THE UNiVERSiTY OF MANCHESTER “I’m delighted that you have chosen to find out more about our unrivalled range of taught master’s courses, and discover how you could be part of it as a postgraduate taught student here at Manchester. You probably already have a good idea about what you want to study and want to gain a broad, deep and specialised knowledge around that subject area. You will want a degree from the University with an excellent reputation both across the UK and overseas. The University of Manchester has a global reach and one of the highest number of on-campus postgraduate students at a research intensive university. At Manchester you'll study with students from many countries and learn from leading teachers and scholars who are acknowledged international experts in their respective fields. I invite you to look at our five research beacons on the University web pages as an illustration of our commitment to combining excellent teaching alongside excellent research. You'll develop skills and gain experience that will go beyond your master's and be fundamental to your future career. I hope you enjoy the day and take the opportunity to speak to our current students to hear their experiences, and to take some time to see some of our world-class facilities and resources on campus. ” Clive Agnew Vice President Teaching, Learning and Students
Getting the most out of the Open Day We’re sure you’ll enjoy finding out more about the wealth of opportunities we offer. Do take the opportunity to talk to the people you meet, particularly admissions staff, academics and current students. They will give you a real insight into what life as a postgraduate student at The University Manchester is like, and will be happy to answer questions about our admissions process or life in Manchester more generally. There will be staff on hand throughout the day at Crawford House Foyer (31). You can also tweet us throughout the day @AdmissionsUoM – staff will be on hand both on the day and in the run-up to the day to answer any questions you may have. Follow the conversation on the day using the hashtag #uompgopenday. Wherever you see a number in this guide in brackets (36), this indicates the corresponding building number on the campus map on pages 18/19. You can also download the iManchester app for iPhone or Android, which includes a searchable campus map. Search for ‘iManchester’ on your app store. There are two main parts to the day: a Student Experience Exhibition and Talks on Postgraduate Study starting at 12pm, and events hosted by our academic Schools and Faculties in the afternoon. Throughout the day, various informal tours and drop-in sessions are available.
Registration Crawford House Foyer (31), all day When you arrive for the day, please come to Crawford House (31) to register. If you have registered in advance, you will need to bring with you the registration number that was emailed to you. If you have not registered in advance, you will be asked to complete a short form.

ExPERiENCE OUR WORlD-lEADiNG FACiliTiES
At The University of Manchester, we are committed to continually investing in our campus, in order to provide outstanding study and research facilities for our students. In particular, you will be able to visit two new facilities during the Open Day: Alan Gilbert learning Commons The £24m Learning Commons has been designed to give students a focal point for learning, offering a stimulating and comfortable 24/7 environment for study. It was designed in consultation with representatives from the Students’ Union to make sure that users’ needs were fully taken into account. The world-class study space boasts more than 1000 flexible study spaces and an inspiring range of equipment and furnishings for individual and group study.
Take a tour of the new Alan Gilbert Learning Commons and the Main Library and see the range of learning spaces available, group study rooms and IT facilities. Learn more about Library resources, including an overview of My Learning Essentials, the Library’s award-winning new skills programme, offering workshops, online resources and skills clinics to provide flexible support for your academic study. Look out for the innovative designs all around the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons, which were created by our students to reflect their experience of studying at Manchester, and the quotations from various alumni and current students which have been used to decorate the entrance.
The Atrium The Atrium is designed to be an information hub for all students at The University of Manchester. It was set up following feedback from students, which showed the need for a ‘one-stop shop’ for information, advice and guidance in the heart of the campus. Students can drop in and get expert advice on a range of issues from money and financial advice, exploring careers and employability, to studying abroad and learning about health and wellbeing. It has quirkily-designed interview pods, which can be used for confidential conversations, as well as an open, comfortable common room area for informal discussions, which will play host to the Student Experience Exhibition during the Open Day.
TOP TiP: drop in and speak to our Careers Consultants at the Student Experience Exhibition The Atrium, First Floor, University Place (37), 12pm – 2pm Ours is a Careers Service that really understands postgraduates, with award-winning online resources and support, just for postgrads. We understand that deciding to study for a postgraduate degree is a big decision, and that you’ll need expert help and guidance to make the most of it. Come and talk to our friendly careers consultants to find out how we can help you. You can also follow them on Twitter: @ManPGCareers
