If you would prefer to view your events dayby-day please go to page 34. In the centre of this guide you will find a campus map, please use this to help you find your way around and locate certain events and activities. Wherever we mention a location in this guide it will be directly followed by a number in brackets i.e. (37). Use this number to pinpoint where you need to go on the campus map.

DISTINGUISHED LECTURE Professor Shami Chakrabarti CBE

As human rights campaigning group Liberty celebrates its 80th year, we welcome its Director, Shami Chakrabarti, to give an inspiring lecture on the importance of universal human rights. Professor Chakrabarti recently became an Honorary Professor here at Manchester. You must book a ticket for this event. Ask Me Wherever you see an Ask Me sign you will find a friendly ambassador willing to help. Faiths and National Societies Fair Meet representatives from the Students’ Union’s national and faith societies and find out how you can get involved. Joining a society is a fantastic way to try out new experiences, meet people with similar interests and kickstart your social life. Sports Fair If you can’t wait to get your kit on then head over to the Sports Fair to find out how you can play for one of the many sports teams. With more than 40 clubs, ranging from athletics to rowing, fencing to karate and many other grass, water and indoor sports, you will definitely find something to keep you active! Start of Year Fair There is plenty of help and support on offer during your studies – it’s just knowing where to find it. Student Fair With over 300 societies on campus ranging from Knitsoc and Chess, to Dodgeball and Bhangra, there’s something for everyone at the Students’ Union. Head down to the biggest fair on campus for society sign ups, fab freebies and a fantastic atmosphere. Students with Families Session A great opportunity to meet other students and their families in the comfortable surroundings of the International Society. Winner of ‘Best New Play’ and ‘Best Fringe Performance’ at the Manchester Theatre Awards, Away from Home is a thought provoking story about a male escort who is forced to question his values, relationships and direction when he is hired by a professional male footballer. Join us for a guided tour of Manchester’s cultural highlights ending at the Portico Library. Let’s Talk: International Friendships Come along and join our workshop designed to help you form international friendships. We will give you hints and tips for conversation starters so that you feel confident to approach people and make new friends. Pangaea Run by students, for students, Pangaea is the hottest ticket in town. Over 6,000 revellers will descend upon the Students’ Union for an unforgettable night of music, mischief and mayhem. A Walk in the Park at Whitworth Art Gallery The University’s Whitworth Art Gallery will reopen its doors on Saturday 25 October 2014 following a £15 million redevelopment project, that will transform the 125 year old Whitworth Art Gallery into a 21st century gallery in the park. Until then, why don’t you come along on one of our walks in the park to learn more about this historic gallery and some of the inspirational artworks it houses. You’ll find out where the key teaching buildings are, as well as libraries, sports facilities and places to eat. The tour will cover ancient and modern must-see sights, including the world famous Manchester United Football Ground, the gothic Town Hall, John Rylands Library and the iconic Beetham Tower. John Rylands Library Tour Part of The University of Manchester, the stunning neo-gothic John Rylands Library is not to be missed. This treasure on Deansgate is host to one of the world’s finest collections of rare books and manuscripts, and as a Manchester student you have the privilege of being able to study in these magnificent surroundings whenever you like. But don’t just take our word for it – come along on one of our tours to see it for yourself, and to find out more about its fascinating history. Manchester Museum Tour Experts from the Visitors Services team will show you around the fascinating Manchester Museum, which is part of the University. Meet our in-house Tyrannosaurus Rex, ‘Stan’, and marvel at the diverse galleries including ancient Egyptian artefacts and our ‘Vivarium’ which is home to some of the rarest frogs, reptiles and lizards on the planet.
