SUMMER REPORT 2021 #wearebristol
Sport is just an absolute joy, isn't it? How special to see fans back in stadiums and around the walls of Wimbledon in the last month. The connection and sense of belonging is coming across strongly in so many areas of our country. Sport has helped many of us through the strangest of years and, in the last few months with restrictions being lifted, it has been great to see our student clubs coming back together, to the sports they love. This Summer Report will showcase some of the great journeys that our clubs and scholars have been on this year, still striving to make the best of the Performance Sport programme. They have been a real credit to the University for all the work they do on and off the pitch to support their members and each other. With the dust settling on the 2020/21 season, the smell of fresh cut grass fills the air as we prepare for Pre-Season 2021. The aim is to bring the biggest and best #WeAreBristol Pre-Season yet for our new and returning student athletes and scholars. In addition, we will welcome new CoOrdinator Staff to the Performance team, in Squash, Hockey and Boat. We are also excited to launch a new online Performance Sport offer which will include live and on-demand digital content, via Sport Exercise and Health app. I will take this opportunity to thank all of our partners, sponsors, stakeholders and friends of the programme - your support has been extra special this year. A special thanks goes to our coaches and support staff who have contributed to this Summer report. Your continued passion, resilience and drive for supporting our students and clubs is what makes the sense of belonging a reality. Finally, to the team in Sport, Exercise and Health, the effort and passion to keep moving forwards this term and provide the best environment for our students in this most challenging year will stand us in good stead when 'normal' returns. #WeAreBristol is coming home in 2021/22. A great year awaits...

With the lessening of restrictions, this term has allowed us to experience what normal Hockey at Bristol would be like. Hockey brand, Y1 held the Y1 Futures Championship, which allowed us to play in a series of matches facing local opposition, some of whom we will face in National League next year! The league was so fun to play in, and it was excellent playing matches again after a very long six months! We also met our coach for next season, Richie Owens, who coached us through training sessions and in matches, which was good to experience, and good to see what our pre-season will look like. With less interruptions from isolation periods this term, and consistent S&C training with Will, I saw major improvements in my strength and sprinting ability - highlighting the importance of S&C for improving match play! Summer profiling was essential in preparing for pre-season. It was great to hit PBs in S&C sessions and see the areas to improve. Advice from Fiona has shown me the importance of proper nutrition for energy, and has improved my performance significantly on the pitch. Connor has also been great, providing exercises for getting over mental blocks and improve my confidence both on and off the pitch. Overall, this term has been so much fun and has shown the necessity of the Performance Team in helping us improve!

With the all the obvious drawbacks of COVID, it was wonderful, when the Summer Term came, to be able to get out on the pitch again. It had been about five months since the team had been together so, on-top of the playing element, it was great to see fellow teammates. Thankfully, the training sessions available had been increased compared from the normal three-times a week schedule, allowing us to play on the majority of weekdays. Furthermore, we had thought there weren’t going to be any competitive matches, as all the leagues were cancelled, however thanks to Young 1’s, a local tournament was organised. We got off to a great start beating every team in the group stages which put us through to play Bath Buccaneers in the final. Although we had previously beaten the Bath team, we were unable to do the same in the final giving them the victory and leaving us to come second in the tournament - a good result all things considered. Summer term has been wonderful in restarting hockey for everyone, bringing the teams back together, getting competitive fixtures going and more training that we had previously. A huge thanks to the staff and supporting members for making it all happen.
Ben Ferguson Vice-Chancellor Scholar 2021, Hockey

We thoroughly enjoyed playing a few matches in BUCS this summer as it allowed beginners to play their first ever game and experienced players to perform after having an entire year away. Allowing us as a club to mix new and experienced players within a team and enjoying the sport we have been training for and seeing the results. With the sun shining and having a BUCS match for the majority of the day, is just the ending to the year that we needed. Playing both Exeter 1’s and half a game at Southampton provided us an invaluable experience to take onto next season. We can’t wait to start playing again next year in both indoor and outdoor BUCS to allow us to grow as a club, put training into practice and gain the results we aim for.

Once back in the gym, we immediately picked up where we let off. Those who had no competition, S&C support provided a welcome structure to their week, supporting wellbeing and mental health, whilst continuing their long-term development. For clubs with competitions to prepare for, we worked hard to catch-up on lost time.
DEVELOPMENTS IN SCHOLAR SUPPORT Our key aim and big achievement from this year is the significant improvement in support for our Scholars, reducing my club coaching load to facilitate a greater focus on this group. This change, combined with developments in our working relationships and practices within our MDT, have resulted in an offer which is the highest level of Scholar support in our history. An example of what this looks like in practice - every Friday, myself and Henry, our Physiotherapist, both are present at the Scholar S&C session. This allows us to problem-solve across both disciplines at the coal face, and implement interventions immediately. The outcome of this improved MDT support has been significant, with programmes increasingly individualised for our Scholars, To my knowledge, we are the only university in the country that offers such multi-disciplinary support within training sessions. I look forward to seeing this work pay off in upcoming competition and into next season.
#wearebristol
LOOKING FORWARDS We are investing significant time and money into the continual growth of the programme over the coming year and beyond: £10,000 spent on equipment into our S&C suite at Coombe Dingle Sports Complex, taking the total investment to £150,000 over the last 4-years. Subscription to Teambuildr, an online app-based software which collects training data, improving the reliability to our training data collection process. Further developing our multidisciplinary support across nutrition, sport psychology, physiotherapy and strength and conditioning, including exploring having Connor (sport psychology) present in addition at all Scholar S&C sessions. Utilising the rise of virtual meetings to introduce our new scholars ahead of joining us at Bristol, allowing us to understand their physical development needs and training history early in their journey. Another big piece of work to come is Scholar Profiling, across every discipline during the first week of pre-season. All practitioners and scholars will meet each other during the first three-days to draw up their individual development plans. Having completed them by the end of the first week of pre-season means we can begin delivering on these plans straight away.
Heading into next academic year our support programme continues to develop and improve, despite the difficulties this past year. I believe that our support programme is now in a good place, not limited by logistics, equipment, or facilities. This is a far cry from where it was when I started my role four-years ago, with one S&C Coach and a gym that couldn’t even fit an entire team! Of course, you can always continue to improve your practice and the relentless pursuit to do so will never stop. I believe we now have the support and delivery we need to facilitate any athlete to reach any level of sport they aspire to. This is an incredibly exciting prospect and a journey I am looking forward to. A huge thanks must go to the rest of the our S&C team: Neil Wheeler, Toby Hodder and Paul Reay. I am incredibly proud of how we as a team have continued to work through this period with resilience, and still able to enjoy our time. As always, thanks for your continued support. Here’s to a more exciting year ahead.
#wearebristol
A case study demonstrating how the developments within our MDT have positively impacted our Scholars' progress. Scholar: Charlotte Hart Sport: Hockey After 6-weeks' working on her sprint technique and strength, you can see Charlotte is achieving a much better ‘A’ position. Her stance leg is a lot stiffer and beneath her centre of mass on ground contact, with her swing leg knee being higher and the foot being under the knee. This will allow more of her movement to be ‘frontside’ (in front of her), improving the efficiency of her running technique and therefore her speed.
BEFORE
This progress has been achieved through coordinated programming between Will (Strength and Conditioning Coach) and Henry (Sport Physiotherapist) to improve Charlottes hip flexibility and hip flexion strength, to allow her to raise her leg higher, including technical coaching of sprint technique, plus strength development in the gym . Charlotte has commented that feeling faster, and Ben (Head Coach, Hockey) has seen an improvement in her pressing as a result of this work. AFTER

The second half of the season could not have started with a more challenging set of events for UBRFC. Early in January we planned to kick off with a bang, our mini preseason was to be followed by fixtures with Oxford and the hope of new BUCS games and a set of local friendlies. Alas it was not to be and we managed one sole field training session before we were plunged back in lockdown with only Zoom calls and online events. Although locked-down, our students and staff made the best of challenging times; undertaking some productive work around club business development; lifestyle, education and exam preparations; and training at home. The Management Team better got to know our new students whilst also developing recruitment plans as we look ahead to the 2021/22 season.
Joe Goodman Head of Rugby, UBRFC
CLUB ENGAGEMENT To build engagement across the club we set up some high-profile calls which were a huge hit. Guests included: Lawrence Dallaglio - World Cup winner Alex King - Gloucester Coach and UBRFC alumnus. Dave Attwood - Bristol Bears. Chris Hewitt - Rugby journalist for The Independent. Mike Aylwin - Rugby journalist for The Guardian Tom Mitchell - GB Rugby 7s Captain, Olympian and UBRFC alunus

@bristolunisport
Our Coaches joined in with the occasional ‘Coaches Corner’. All of these calls and more can be found on the clubs YouTube channel.
Our Maroon Scholars took advantage of the screen time available, ploughing through large amounts of game analysis, profiling and educational webinars.
1876 CLUB Alongside the Management Team, the UBRFC Committee began preparations for The 1876 Club launch in September. The students were proactive in building a database of alumni and reaching out to them via social media as we built awareness of the Club Program. We also gathered the previous 20 years’ of Club Captains on Zoom and presented our story to develop further interest in the 1876 project. It was fantastic to see so many passionate and supportive past members on the call and we look forward to meeting later this year at one of our 1876 events
SCHOLARS Vice-Chancellor Scholar interviews took place this term. We are pleased to announce three new Performance level players will be joining the squad next season, all of whom we believe will help build the team towards BUCS success over the coming years.

FIXTURES
BRISTOL 7s TOURNAMENT Club Manager, Olly Slym, with the committee, launched our first UBRFC 7s tournament. It will be played in July at Gordano, with many teams from across the South West excited to be involved.
From 7 April we could commence our season, training and preparing for friendly fixtures against Hartpury and Bath University. With only 15-hours of training for a team who haven't touched a ball or had contact with anyone in months, I’m pleased to say the games were a huge success. Hartpury away was a huge physical test, for all our players. Our new students showed real promise and determination, with many demonstrating the potential to develop into solid 1st XV players over the coming years. The most pleasing factors being the exposure to high level rugby for our new men in and a proper competitive send off for our leavers
Last but not least we must say a huge thank you to Simon Martin, Assistant Performance Coach as he departs us for pastures new, as a Rugby League Development officer in Bristol SGS and the All Golds.
END OF YEAR THANKS The end-of-year Club dinner gave an opportunity say our goodbyes, present our Maroons and Star Clubmen with awards, and share in being grateful for the wins we did have as a club in this most difficult of years.

@bristolunisport
I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all those involved in helping us run the program in the 2020/21 season our grounds and facilities staff, wider SEH team, the UBRFC committee and Coaching team - who have all been so positive, agile and engaging in these tough times. Gareth Delve has been a superb asset as a Guest Coach throughout, alongside the legend that is Shane Claridge. New Physio, Sean Lewis, has been welcomed into the fold and Neil Wheeler must receive special thanks as our S&C Coach for keeping the teams going both at on campus and at home.
Si has been a huge asset to the coaching team and UBRFC players over the past three seasons. We wish him the very best and hope he can join us for the odd early morning training session if we’re lucky next year.
We look forward to a fresh start in August 2021 and I hope for more on-field performances rather than the off-field activities!
What word can I best use to describe Summer term? The word "frustrating" jumps to mind! Being an indoor sport during the COVID restrictions left its frustrations. During the time away, our Club found social ways (following social distancing of course) to stay in touch, but there was always the uncertainty as to the length of time it would take before we could return to court.
Rebecca (Bex) Pantaney Badminton Coordinator, UOBBC
Finally, what a better way to finish the year than being names #WEAREBRISTOL Club of the Year at the Bristol SU Awards. A huge congratulations to all involved in turning the club around in such difficult times.
Once we were allowed back to the sport we love, it was again not quite as we knew it, with social distancing requiring our Club to reduce the number of players allowed into each session. However, this by no means damped the enthusiasm and atmosphere! Once we returned we got creative and had a bit of fun with spatial awareness training using blindfolds and some flexibility testing. We also shared match play with Gloucestershire University to add some variety, due to the lack of BUCS this year.

After the disappointment of the season being declared ‘null and void’ in February/March, I am delighted to say Term 3 back on the pitch has surpassed expectations! The club has been able to play nearly 50 local matches this term, finally giving many members a hugely positive experience to end the year.
LADIE'S SQUAD The Ladies Performance Squad competed in the ‘Y1 Future Champs’ competition. While we didn't reach the finals, it was brilliant to give nearly 40 players the opportunity to represent the club’s 1st team after only two competitive league matches were possible during the regular season.
Men's Hockey also saw a large number of friendlies, giving the opportunity for many members to represent the club during this term in matches against Old Bristolians, Westbury, Clifton Robinsons, Bristol & West, Bath, UWE plus others. A huge thank you to all who were involved in putting all these matches together.
#wearebristol
The ladies also had friendly matches against Bath and UWE amongst others, with almost all members having the opportunity to represent the club; no mean feat given the year is has been.
The Men’s Performance Squad also competed in the Y1 Future Champs, topping the group with a 100% record. The final against Team Bath Buccaneers, did not disappoint; a thrilling contest ended 43 to Bath but with a big crowd and two sets of high-quality players all wanting to win, it felt like the moment hockey was back!
@bristolunisport
Results: Clifton College - 3-3 draw and a Bath Buccaneers - 3-0 defeat Taunton Vale - 2-1 defeat
MEN'S SQUAD
SCHOLARS The new Performance Sport Scholarship Programme has continued to offer athletes all it can during these strange times. Our Vice Chancellor and Maroon Scholars have had excellent opportunities to develop on and off the pitch. A huge thank you to Matt Paine, Will Ruscombe-King, Toby Hodder, Connor Grant, Fiona Lithander and Henry Abrahams for their fantastic contributions towards our young athletes.
UBHC A thank you must go to our outgoing Club Captains Kate Dunn-Massey and Kincaid Ingram; what a season to be a Club Captain! They have led the club superbly, supported very well by their committees. Charlotte Ross and Dhillon Shukla take the reins for the next season and I am really looking forward to working with them both.
CLUB DEVELOPMENT We are soon to welcome a Hockey Coordinator to our team, to support the Head Coach in the overall development and success of the club. The role being supported and funded by the UBHC and University of Bristol Sport.
The UBHC Supporters’ Club has been setup this year to financially support University of Bristol Hockey, grow and engage the #WeAreBristol Hockey community, and raise money for two incredible charities: Cancer Research and NHS Charities Together.
Everyone connected by the UBHC Supporter’s Club will be connected by a common goal; to see University of Bristol Hockey Club continue to go from strength to strength!

The club’s interaction with its wider network is something the club wishes to grow in the coming years. The Supporter’s Club is an opportunity for our wider hockey network to contribute to success of the club moving forward and, most importantly, remain a part of the club.
Global pandemic aside, the past 18 months have been very productive for UBBC. We started the season strongly with the most exciting pre-season I have been a part of during my time at UBBC. The standard of our squads continues to improve with each passing year. Structural changes to the club were also made at the beginning of this academic year: non-students joined the club for the first time, we introduced our para-rowing programme and welcomed an additional coach funded by our alumni. The one thing that was missing was the opportunity to go racing. The club had been training well and we were excited for the season ahead. Unfortunately, the second lockdown put an end to activity for much of the winter months, with our Club not coming together out on the water again until March.

@bristolunisport
Since then, I am pleased to report that the club has been progressing well.
Edward Bloomfield Head Coach, UBBC
GB TRIALISTS John Davies, Rob Davies, Harry Hethrington and Robbie Prosser were invited to the GB Open Trials in June. They all raced well through the weekend, representing the high standard at Bristol but were not successful in securing a place on the U23 World Championship Team. They will be invited to trial for the U23 European Championship team later this summer after Henley. The four of them show real promise for a very exciting Henley campaign.
COMPETITION We fielded a strong contingent of athletes on the Dorney Lake Olympic course for a busy two days of racing. The weekend was an incredibly exciting return to racing for the whole club. The Bristol academic W4- did well to take a well-earned 2nd place in their final and the win in the Academic W4- category. A fantastic result for a young crew containing women who have come through the novice programme at Bristol.
Our Men entered three VIIIs: one of the largest entries in recent years. The Bristol A crew raced well placing 3rd in the B final. Bristol B and C crews entered as matched eights and raced in the E final, finishing 3rd and 4th. Our Bristol academic M4+ made it to the A final, finishing 2nd and taking the win in their category, beating crews from Oxford University, University of London and Imperial College. Disappointingly, UBBC were unable to attend the BUCS Regatta this year, but now focus on Henley Women’s and Henley Royal Regatta later this summer.

@bristolunisport
CLUB DEVELOPMENT The Fernside Trust has pledged to fund additional coaching resources for UBBC, worth £10,000 per year, for the next three years. This third coach will take a lead role in delivering the Novice Programme. I’m personally thrilled for our novices, who will now receive professional and consistent coaching throughout the year. Since the launch of a Direct Debit donation platform in 2017, over 150 alumni, friends, and supporters of UBBC have generously given every month to collectively raise over £30,000.
I'm pleased to announce that these funds from UBBC Alumni have purchased a new eight for the Men’s Squad, making this one of the largest donations the UBBC Alumni has ever made to UBBC. The boat is a Hudson Ultimate SHARK Predator (USP) which is Hudson’s top of the range model of the same type used by top international crews. The boat will be named in memory of Piers Robinson, UBBC’s 1991 Henley winning captain, who sadly passed away in April this year after his recent battle with cancer. Piers was an inspiring and visionary leader that helped put Bristol and South-West rowing on the map with UBBC’s first ever Henley win. Piers returned to UBBC as a volunteer coach the following year and more recently wrote an inspirational recollection of his time at UBBC in our Winter 2016 magazine. It is clear to see he embodied the values of UBBC. We hope to hold an official boat naming ceremony and celebration on this Summer at Henley Royal Regatta.

TRAINING
Head Coach
What a year for university sport; our students have really had the odds against them, with access to sport being massively affected. Our team, UBTC members included, have been incredible, and as soon as the gates to the courts reopened in March Tennis was back! The response from our players in this last term has again shown us how amazing this club really is.
After a long break away from University Sport, UBTC returned to Tennis raring to go! With indoor tennis off the cards until May, the Club trained hard in more difficult outdoor conditions. Membership numbers remained high despite the new blended learning model of the University, and the Club continued to offer a full schedule of training with professional coaching provided at every level: BUCS, Advanced Team and Squad, Intermediate, Beginner and Free Play.
REGIONAL TENNIS AWARD MAROON SCHOLARS This was the first year of Maroon Scholars for UBTC and the programme has been a brilliant support for performance players Tommy and Katie. Despite the difficulties of the year, our two scholars have continued to have the best support from our Multi-Disciplinary Team and have used the amazing opportunities available to them provided by SEH, the Tennis Team and UBTC. The club are looking to grow our group of scholars next year from 2 to 4 which is very exciting and will help us to grow the quality of our performance offer.
@bristolunisport
We were really proud as a Club to be named South West Regional Winners of the University of the Year Award by the LTA, and make it to the national finals. It is testament to the hard work and commitment that the club has continued to show over this extraordinary year, and UBTC are well deserving of this recognition from our national governing body.
#wearebristol
COMPETITION BUCS Individuals - Bristol hosted the BUCS Individuals Tennis Western Qualifier tournament for the second time in May. Our Maroon Scholars, Katie Kirby and Tommy Cartledge, both participated and had very successful tournaments. Katie sadly lost out to a strong Cardiff University competitor on day-two. Tommy qualified for the Finals (7th seed) however due to injury could not compete. National Premier League - Bristol began their NPL campaign back in October and have shown resilience and determination to keep competing to the highest levels despite changes to format and fixtures. Bristol topped their South West League table, beating Southampton, Lee-onSolent and Cardiff on their way to a playoff verses Exeter. Unfortunately we lost on games count back when the match was tied 2-2 on fixtures.
In June UBTC welcomed back past members for the annual Alumni V UBTC event; the Hobson Cup. The event was founded in 2019 in memory of past UBTC and BUCS Team member, Jack Hobson and had been postponed since December. After some well fought out singles and doubles plus an additional netball game the Alumni came out victorious on a beautiful sunny day at Coombe Dingle. The response to this event continues to be exceptional and yet again reminds me of the remarkable people, both past and present, that I have had the pleasure of working with at UBTC. Thank you to all the effort made by those involved, especially Ardghal, Alumni captain, who travelled from Northern Ireland for the event.
#wearebristol
Thank you to captains Daf James and Matt Whitehead, and the rest of the squad for your fantastic efforts - Tommy Cartledge, Arturo Pinazo, Ollie Mayo, Alex Matthews and Theo Woolhouse-Lorber.
ALUMNI EVENT - HOBSON CUP
@bristolunisport
This resulted in us being sent into the onepair play-off event in Loughborough where our top pairing in Tommy and Arturo beat both University of Bath and University of Loughborough teams to qualify for Bristol for the National Finals in August. This is such a deserved outcome for our NPL team and we look forward to facing some of the best players in the country.
Intra-Club The Intra-Club competition on Wednesday afternoons offered UBTC members some additional competitive play in the absence of BUCS. Players thoroughly enjoyed the extra opportunity to get on court and access match play they hadn’t been able to have over the rest of the year.
END OF YEAR THANKS As we see the end of one of the hardest years for student sport I want to say thank you to the coaches and committee that have worked so hard to make the time players have had with us this year as enjoyable as possible. Coaching team Connor, Francois, Ben, Dom, Finlay and Ravi have all made tennis accessible, fun and kept our players learning and growing and we are very lucky to have you with us at the club. The committee have been phenomenal this year but special mention to Men’s and Women’s captains Matt Whitehead and Fay Brittain, Vice-Club Captain Finlay Perry and Club Captain Adam Payton who have gone above and beyond anyone’s expectations for the club and their players.
#wearebristol
We look forward to a more ‘normal’ 2021/22 season where we will continue to support the committee and our players to reach their potential in this wonderful sport.
@bristolunisport
Finally, UBTC are happy to announce the return of the University Tennis Coordinator role to Bristol in July after a noted absence of two years. The role will be filled by L4 Senior Performance Coach Ollie Bendall who will be a fantastic addition to our team, in position to grow participation and competition for our students, as well as create workforce opportunities.
An interesting year to say the least, but positive nonetheless. Although no competitions and match play were available from BUCS or even local leagues due to the restrictions in place, we managed to make the most of what we were able to achieve.
CLUB DEVELOPMENT This year provided an opportunity to reevaluate how the club will want to run in future years, including discussions about how to engage our club members more holistically, from social players right through to the performance and professional squads. At the heart of the discussions were what the club stands for and how our members can best represent that vision and message. We want to create an environment of willingness and self-initiation from all members, moving away from “need" and "must” towards language which “encourages" and "supports”. We also began discussions that will shape the pre-season of 2021/22 and transcend a culture of “me, within a team” to “we, as a team”. This is important when you consider that Squash as an individually-played sport on the court. This will be encouraged and emphasised by the new UBSC Committee they know where we are all heading during the new season, and our new Club President, Fin McManus, and I will be paying close attention to this moving forward.
Mark Toseland Squash Coordinator
CLUB ENGAGEMENT Due to restrictions, most indoor training sessions were only able to go ahead if supervised by a coach or if it was solo practice. The club pulled together to engage the coach, and initially focused on putting fun and enjoyment at the heart of their sessions on court. Soon they were back to training at a higher intensity with a unified team goal. The Club Committee rallied well to engage members for self-initiated outside fitness sessions, supported by a strong social media presence. My role, as Squash Coordinator, comes at an increased financial cost to the club, but with future plans in place they know that this is a worthy investment for future success. I feel very humbled to have been chosen, knowing they value the work that I do for them and will do going forward. I am excited for what the future holds for the club and players and for our new vision to seek out personal development and success for everyone we work with. Bring on the 2021/22 season!

Surridge Sport are delighted to be given another 3 year term working with one of our most prestigious universities. As part of the new agreement the brand has created five new updated designs for the clubs to have the freedom to choose from. On top of this Surridge will also be offering all clubs the opportunity to opt for an exclusive 10% discount on placement of orders or a rebate at the end of term to spend on new kit the following year. The introduction of the new Camo leisurewear including a free performance top when purchased with the new Camo perf top sees the range complete and we very much ;ook forward to growing the partnership further over the coming years.

We are so pleased to have re-signed with Surridge for another 3-years and shows how important that sense of belonging which kit can provide. We are excited to be offering a brand new playing kit for the 2021/22 season. Clubs can choose from four new styles as well as being fully involved in the process of designing their own away kit. Staff will also be in new kit, ready to Welcome students in September. We look forward to continuing that sense of belonging for all staff and students through our Surridge partnership.
