To our alumni and friends...

the past two fiscal years have been a whirlwind for the University of

Central Florida. The university has taken unprecedented steps in its history. In June of 2006 we celebrated the end of our tremendously successful

Central to Our Future Campaign. It was our most ambitious effort to date, with a goal of $250 million. The campaign raised over $365 million in

private and state-matched support.

I’m pleased to present you with this multiyear annual report, which highlights some of the tremendous accomplishments of the past few years. On the heels of our landmark capital campaign, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER two of the most exciting new facilities in our university’s history were built. Bright House Networks Stadium and the College of Medicine have instantly become symbols of our burgeoning campus. ROBERT HOLMES UCF FOUNDATION, INC.

Bright House Networks Stadium represents the culmination of community partnerships, sponsorships and individual donor support. The 45,000-seat facility has quickly become a routine destination for alumni and fans.

In 2005, an announcement was made that will forever change the face of Central Florida – UCF would create a college of medicine. In October of 2007 the university broke ground on the UCF Health Sciences Campus at Lake Nona. The college will ultimately educate 120 of the nation’s finest new physicians on an annual basis. When the college opens in the fall of this year, the charter class of 40 students will enjoy full scholarships, paid for by our generous alumni and friends. As we move forward, we remain committed to being trusted stewards for the thousands of donors who pledge their financial support to UCF. We sincerely thank our volunteer leadership and all of you who support the university’s vision of educating the future leaders of our great state and nation.

UCF stands for opportunit y

UCF Foundation supports that opportunity. While funding from the state provides basic financial support, gifts made through the UCF Foundation fund scholarships, program and faculty endowments, and new classrooms, laboratories and buildings that add value to a UCF education and bring distinction to the university.

Meeting the Challenge: Dean Mead

4

To fund 40 charter class scholarships before the college opens, Dean Deborah German issued a challenge to the Central Florida community. And it didn’t take long for a community leader to step up. Michael Minton, was the first to bring the challenge to his law firm, Dean, Mead, Egerton, Bloodworth, Capuano & Bozarth, P.A. “Dean German gave a presentation at the Orlando Chamber retreat,” said Minton. “She talked about securing 40 charter class scholarships as one gift. I was sitting with Sesh Thakkar [of the Tavistock Group] and we discussed dividing the scholarships into 40 separate ones. That led us to create a ‘business-to-business challenge.’ Sesh and I committed to underwriting the first two scholarships on the spot.” “We were thrilled with the opportunity. We wanted to relay to Dr. German and the Central Florida medical community our commitment to what they are doing. We wanted to show our appreciation for their efforts.”

Minton and Dean Mead believe the College of Medicine will do great things for the university and the community right away. “The college creates prestige and notoriety for UCF. The economic impact it has on Central Florida is immeasurable. The plans to create a medical city at Lake Nona are fantastic. It will be an incredible place and will no doubt be emulated across the country.” Additionally, Minton sees the influx of staff and researchers as a major boost to our area. “The doctors and professionals moving into Central Florida will create a better community. These new community members will become business, family and public leaders. The new medical city will create spin-off businesses, offices, opportunities, and with the bio tech sector being added there will be cross-over between the College of Optics and Photonics and much more. It’s hard to envision today what opportunities will be created in the future but it will definitively change the way we live.”

The Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation

When news of UCF’s plan to build a college of medicine began circulating around Central Florida, the trustees of the Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation not only took an interest, they took action. “There were several reasons for donating to the College of Medicine,” said Harold A. Ward, III, president of the foundation. “As stewards of the foundation, our trustees follow what our founders, Jeannette and Hugh McKean, would have done. While we believe the McKeans would have supported this project, we also know a medical college is long overdue for our area. There is a need for new medical schools and an increase in doctors as our population continues to grow.” The Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation was established in 1959 by Jeanette Genius McKean, in honor of her mother. The McKeans had a long history with UCF. Dr. Hugh McKean, Jeanette’s husband and former president of Rollins College, was an early supporter of UCF. He and a group of community leaders donated a portion of the initial funding to purchase the land on which the university sits. Once UCF received approval from the state to build the college, the foundation again pledged their support by creating an endowed scholarship. “The college is clearly a plus for UCF, but the bigger benefit is to our community,” said Ward. “UCF will be educating doctors who will hopefully stay here and practice. The college will be an economic boon to our community. It will recruit more professionals and create higher-paying jobs in our area.” Mr. Ward and the foundation are very confident in the future successes of the college and know their support will see immeasurable results. “Dr. German is a strong leader with terrific energy. She and the rest of the UCF family are very supportive, and Dr. Hitt’s ability to get the medical school approved is impressive. He is a great leader for UCF and the community, and we’re glad to have the opportunity to support this project.”

the Tangerine Bowl (later renamed the Citrus Bowl), the talks grew; taking the energy and excitement of

game days to campus would be ideal. Unfortunately, the cost of building a traditional, block and mortar

football stadium was too costly for the university and the Knights seemed destined to call the Citrus Bowl home for many more years.

However, in the spring of 2005, Jerry and Susan Roth pledged a leadership gift to UCF if the university would build an on-campus football stadium. Jerry brought with him a new vision and determination that the stadium be built on time and within budget. He took the time to look at comparable stadiums and their designs. He also worked with UCF’s administration in selecting an architect and general contractor to build the facility. The stadium’s west side features the four-level Roth Tower containing 24 luxury suites. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE >

STADIUM FACTS The stadium contains 2,452 tons of steel. More than 600 truckloads of concrete were used (equivalent to 60,000 yards or 1,620,000 cubic feet) with a weight of approximately 240,000,000 pounds. The first level of the Roth Tower contains a Club Lounge (4,200 square feet) with seating for 822.

The Roths’ efforts laid the groundwork for what would be an exhaustive process to build the stadium. After approval from the city, county and state, and numerous community meetings and forums, the plan was approved to build a football stadium on the UCF campus. As a result, the university broke ground in the spring of 2006 on a 45,000 seat stadium. Once the stadium was approved, the next task was clear: raise enough private support to pay for its construction. Tim Leonard, former associate athletics director for development, led this arduous effort. “The excitement surrounding this project was overwhelming. The community really got behind us from the beginning and wanted to help UCF athletics get to the next level. It’s rare for a university to build a stadium on campus these days, so this earned us immediate national attention.” Fans purchased club seats almost as soon as they became available. Suites in the Roth Tower were claimed just as quickly. Still, the stadium needed a naming sponsor. Leonard thought about companies that were strong in the community and would be a good fit with the university. “Bright House Networks was a logical choice for all parties. They have become synonymous with Central Florida living. They provide services that are part of our daily lives,” Leonard said. “When we presented the idea to Chris Fenger [J. Christian Fenger, President of Bright House Networks, Central Florida Division] he was very interested. He immediately recognized the value of a partnership like this.” “Bright House and UCF share several common traits,” said Fenger. “We both touch the community in a significant way and are progressive in our thinking and actions, so the idea of partnering seemed natural. We make our community investment decisions based on what is most important to our customers and there’s no question that UCF matters to this community academically, economically and emotionally.”

U N I V E R S I T Y O F C E N T R A L F L O R I D A F O U N D AT I O N , I N C .

The first season in Bright House Networks Stadium was a tremendous success. UCF fans shattered the all-time attendance mark for a season, leading Conference USA in attendance.

10

Fenger was especially impressed with the effect the stadium had on our area. “I expected the stadium to have a positive impact on the team, fans, campus community, and Central Florida community, but I must confess, I think we all underestimated the level of excitement and enthusiasm the team and stadium received from all corners of the community. I’ve never seen anything like it and we are very proud to be associated in such a significant way with UCF. We look forward to continuing this relationship, to working together with the university – in both the letter and spirit of our agreement – to make the stadium a place where our community can come together, have fun and cheer-on our home team.”

UCF College of Education

The Progress Energy-UCF Leadership Institute

The Progress Energy-UCF Leadership Institute has served as a model for teaching educational leaders since 2003. Its mission is to enhance the knowledge and skills of local educational leaders through programs led by the nation’s most distinguished scholars. Participants in the institute, which is supported by faculty from the UCF College of Education and the Academy for Teaching, Learning and Leadership, are exposed to the best practices in education and the private sector during a two-year program. “Progress Energy’s gift is a wonderful example of what can happen when business partners with a university,” said President John Hitt. “Their corporate generosity will help UCF provide a forum for Florida educators to work with business leaders to learn best practices. We will provide school leaders with the tools they need to face the critical educational challenges in our state.”

U N I V E R S I T Y O F C E N T R A L F L O R I D A F O U N D AT I O N , I N C .

Teams of school and central office leaders from 13 Central Florida school districts are sharing their findings with other leaders, facilitating the integration of these ideas into their schools and classrooms. Along with classroom training, the institute allows participants to learn from their peers in other Florida counties and share their passion for learning and innovation.

12

“Progress Energy is committed to investing in the future of Florida’s schools and the regions we serve,” said Dave Maxon, regional vice president for Progress Energy Florida. “The Leadership Institute has provided the opportunity for Florida’s educators to receive world-class training and development. We are pleased with the investment the institute has provided in our school leaders and believe it has serviced as a substantial resource for them to build stronger schools and students throughout Florida.” Participants are selected based on leadership track records, potential to make leadership contributions in their communities and a commitment to Florida students. The inaugural classes of the Leadership Institute included 134 participants from school systems across the area. Each participating school district selected a team including the superintendent, central office administrators and school principals.

College of Education

“The institute has been a win-win experience for everyone,” said Dr. Rose Taylor, Associate Professor of Educational Leadership. “Districts report that they frequently engage national speakers to consult in their districts after interacting with them at the institute. Administrators enjoy the process we have used – district teams participating in practitioner application sessions, followed by a national speaker of contemporary leadership issues, and concluding with job-alike sessions where they discuss and apply the ideas across district lines. Participants report that being an institute participant is the best professional development they have experienced.” Dr. William Bozeman, Professor of Educational Leadership, is proud of the institute and its accomplishments. “Last year I commenced a new doctoral program for a select group of school leaders called ‘Leadership 2010.’ The participants in this program attend all institute meetings, further enhancing the linkages between academics and practice. The opportunities for their academic study through the institute and dialogue with many of Florida’s best school administrators are priceless.” The institute’s successes have not only earned it praise locally, but educational leaders across the country are taking notice, as well. “The bridges between theory and practice have long been a challenge for universities,” says Bozeman. “Our institute has been hailed as a national model in this regard. Just this year, I was asked by Dean Tom Burham of the University of Mississippi to assist in their development of a prototype institute that follows the UCF model. I can think of few higher compliments.”

Entrepreneurship and Innovation

Mark Plaumann (’74) has never been one to waste time. The Orlando native received his bachelor’s degree in a mere 21 months. He accomplished that feat by spending much of his time buried in studies, when he wasn’t working the 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. shift at UPS. He became a Certified Public Accountant in 1975 at the age of 19, and earned his Certificate of Management Accounting in 1976. He was the youngest person in the country to receive those certifications. His hard work and determination paid off. During his time at UCF, Plaumann worked part-time for Ernst & Young (Ernst & Ernst at the time). After graduation he was offered a fulltime job. Plaumann transferred to Ernst’s headquarters in Cleveland after finishing his master’s at UCF in 1979. It was with this same dedication and drive that Plaumann made a capital gift to his alma mater. He made a commitment to UCF and the Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation (CEI). The CEI fosters the notion that UCF stands for opportunity by working with a network of university, business and government partners to promote new venture creation, economic development and a better quality of life throughout the region. As manager-member and co-founder of Greyhawke Capital Advisors LLC, Plaumann understands the value of entrepreneurship and centers like the CEI. “The CEI gives students the opportunity to invent something and create a business for themselves. What happened at Stanford University with Yahoo and Google are great examples. This center can help attract people who have those interests.”

College of Business Administration

Plaumann knows how to operate successful businesses. Greyhawke’s affiliates have more than 80 properties throughout the US, with a current fair market value in excess of $500 million. His leadership, both as a successful entrepreneur and a donor, make him an invaluable friend to the College of Business Administration and the CEI. “The strength of the US economy is innovation and people having the ability to start new businesses. My hope is that the CEI will help people to do just that.”
