Everything starts with the desire to be more than you are today. A h i g h ly c ov e t e d b r a n d. A m o r e s t i m u l at i n g p l ac e to wo r k . A more skilled researcher. At UCF, we provide the opportunity for students to mature, for faculty to excel and for alumni to contribute in countless ways.

or more than 25 years, Dr. Chase has been digging deep into ancient Maya ruins in Caracol, Belize to discover clues about the past. UCF is a place where students can do fieldwork.

They’re part of a project. But archaeology isn’t just about digging up history; it’s also about discovering student potential. For Dr. Chase, a hands-on education is the key. Learning to problem-solve, to work in teams and how to do interdisciplinary work are the skills of the future.

CF Music’s Jeff Rupert understands that music is an art and a business—and so the department started its own record label, in addition to its jazz festival. Flying Horse

Records has released two albums and they’re rising in the charts. The goal is to give the students a voice, let them help make the record company. Jeff, his colleagues and his students also have a history of getting involved in the community. When we started the UCF—Orlando Jazz Festival, we developed a really important partnership with the community.

acksonville Jaguar Mike Sims-Walker plays for the big league, but hasn’t forgotten his UCF roots. I remember working hard to make it out of a rough neighborhood,

attend college and play football at the next level. And now he’s giving back by starting the Michael A. Sims-Walker Scholarship Foundation at UCF. My father is a very influential person in my life. Mike is one of UCF’s most successful players on the field, and also a dedicated, lifetime Knight.

acqueline Boehme has been a student of many things, from physics to Kung Fu to painting. But her first passion is helping people in her community through

medicine. A doctor is not just somebody who helps others at a hospital or practice. You go out into the world and find those who really need it. A fast-starter, Jacqueline has already engaged in cutting-edge research. I started researching stem cells my first semester at UCF.

the generous with those far from home. I’ve always lived by the saying: If not you, then who? As an accomplished race car driver, he has won 90 races. For me, racing comes down to fun, but it’s also the competition of it all.

avid Tate has three national television commercials under his belt, thanks to UCF’s connections and Central Florida location. What can’t you do in Orlando? There are so many

different attractions you can’t find anywhere else. And David hasn’t just experienced the industry on the stage or in front of the cameras. I’ve had the chance to work backstage with costumes, take a class on makeup and work in the box office. Next act: a second degree in accounting.

fter graduating with a Radio–Television degree, Cheryl Hines worked several jobs before her big break on the HBO show “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” She credits her

education with getting her started. I learned how to edit here at UCF. Without my education I would have been lost. And there is still so much more in her future. With three new films and her reality series “School Pride,” Cheryl knows what it takes to make it. Do not be afraid of failing. Most people are so afraid of failing they never even try.

ollege of Nursing graduate Bucky Boaz was working in an emergency room right out of college, when he realized what nursing students really need: hands-on experience in

a fast-paced medical environment. I’ve always been a dreamer, but UCF gave me the skills to also become a doer. So, he started a course at UCF that became a national model. At the time it was one of the only courses like it in the country, but now almost every program in the U.S. has something similar. And it was his experiences at UCF that helped motivate him.

atie Jackson knows that balancing academic and athletic achievements is no game—you have to work harder. Being an honors student is helping her reach her ultimate

goal: to be a doctor. It’s good to be around other students who are so focused and organized. It motivates you. But it wasn’t just soccer or academics that drew Katie to UCF—she wanted a stateof-the-art-university. UCF’s campus is so much more modern than older universities.
