Student Union Harris Corporation Engineering Center

This is UCF Over the years, UCF retained its character and convenience through careful planning. The brick buildings of the academic core reflect the early years of the campus. Newer structures incorporate today’s more energy-efficient materials. And the Student Union gives the campus a focal point and reflects the school’s emphasis on the student body.

UCF has been innovative in financing the school’s growth, too. To finance a $107 million arena, UCF turned to a private sector revenue model, adding a retail component and relying on parking fees and rental income. Bright House Networks Stadium is another example.

And that’s only the main campus. UCF’s reach extends further with nine regional campuses servicing 11 Florida counties, the Florida Solar Energy Center in Cocoa, the Center for Emerging Media in downtown Orlando, the Rosen College of Hospitality Management, which is located in the heart of the world’s most famous tourist destination, and the College of Medicine at Lake Nona.

UCF may be the only university to open two new venues in a single year. And that’s just what UCF did in 2007 — a 10,000-seat arena for basketball games, and the 45,000-seat Bright House Networks Stadium, home to the Knights football team. The Knights are champions on and off the field. They’ve triumphed in the classroom — UCF student-athletes have earned an average GPA of 3.0 or better for 11 consecutive semesters. This year, the Knights won titles in women’s soccer and football in the inaugural year of the American Athletic Conference. With new facilities, great action and plenty of sports to choose from, rooting for the black and gold has never been easier. ATHLETIC TEAMS B as e b al l

SPOTLIGHT: COLLEGE OF MEDICINE The College of Medicine takes an entirely new approach to learning by encouraging students to pursue their passions in medical school, instead of waiting until they graduate. In some cases, students design their own programs. They work closely with faculty members, community patients and physicians, as well as fellow researchers, to create an atmosphere of innovation and inquisitiveness most medical students wait years to experience.

Our medical school methods are fresh. What students learn is just as important as how they learn. UCF breathes curiosity into its approach. Classes include live patient interaction early and often, clinical cases throughout, organ-based instructional modules, interactive lectures and labs, small groups, and individualized research and study. The UCF researchers and outstanding physicians are an added dimension to students’ medical education from the moment they start. So, whether their passion is helping one patient at a time, curing cancer, or changing the state of health care for the better, students can tailor their work toward those goals with UCF.

Motion-capture studio (MOCAP)

America’s Partnership University Strong relationships and a shared vision lead to successful partnerships. And UCF has solid relationships with Central Florida built on mutual respect and shared goals.

Working with organizations such as the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission, Orange County and the City of Orlando led to successful projects including a Venture Lab, a Small Business Development Center, a Entrepreneurship Center, GrowFL and Blackstone LaunchPad. Partnerships were key to the formation of many of UCF’s top research centers including the world-famous Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers (CREOL). Partnership activity also contributed to the formation of the Florida High Tech Corridor. The corridor focuses on growing the high-tech industry in a 23-county region. Since its inception in 1996, the corridor has partnered with more than 375 companies and created an estimated 4,000 jobs. Partnerships with local and state organizations and Electronic Arts, creators of Madden NFL, led to the creation of the UCF Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy, which provides a master’s degree in interactive entertainment. These partnerships and others bring revenue and jobs to the region and state while creating more opportunities for the university’s students, faculty, alumni and community members.

Community Community Service

UCF students and faculty members go beyond the classroom to reach out, mentor and share in the spirit of a true metropolitan university. The co-op program at UCF is one of the largest cooperative education programs in the Southeast. More than 21,000 students participate in co-op, internships, practica, clinicals, senior design and undergraduate research. The Office of Experiential Learning at UCF has been recognized for excellence by the National Society for Experiential Education, receiving their “Program of the Year” award for innovation, institutional commitment, quality and collaboration. The department also contributed to UCF’s overall recognition for engagement, winning the “Engaged Campus Award” from Florida Campus Compact and gaining the Carnegie Foundation designations for both “Curricular Engagement” and “Outreach and Partnerships.”

Major Employer

20

Educated Workforce

With 100,000 alumni living in Central Florida, UCF produces a cadre of educated alumni who live, work and pay taxes in Florida. UCF offers hundreds of majors to ensure a diverse, educated community and skilled employees. Our students become teachers, firefighters and police officers. And nurses and doctors. And business leaders and scientists. Each year UCF graduates 15,000 students. Many stay and enter the workforce armed with an education that translates into greater earning power. Some go out–of-state, adding to the growing national reputation of UCF and Orlando.

UCF is one of Central Florida’s largest employers with 1,725 faculty members and 9,800 staff members. The university impacts more than 112,000 additional jobs and adds $7.73 billion of value to the economy, according to a 2009-10 study by the Florida Board of Governors.

UCF professors also help and work side-by-side with the community on joint projects — from helping underprivileged children to read to protecting the environment, and from developing health-care solutions to alternative energy solutions.

Many of the 10,000 employees in the adjacent Research Park work with UCF researchers and students on projects in the sciences, engineering, photonics and optics, modeling and simulation, and health-related fields.

Regional Campus Workforce Development

Stretching across seven Florida counties, UCF and its nine regional campuses work with local state colleges to provide customized programs close to where students and residents live and work.

Orlando

Orlando is not just theme parks. Our area has seen rapid growth and economic expansion in recent years and is a center for the life sciences, medical innovation and technological developments. That’s why Orlando ranked No. 9 on Forbes’ 2014 list of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S. and Fast Company magazine has included Orlando in their list of “Best Cities for Innovation.”
