Breaking News MARCI GONZALEZ, ’05, knew as early as elementary school that she wanted to be a TV news reporter. Armed with a UCF degree, the ABC News correspondent chased her love for broadcast journalism to New York City, where she has learned a great deal from interviewing people in times of tragedy. For Gonzalez, who has covered horrific events from the mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, to Superstorm Sandy and the devastating 2010 Haiti earthquake, dealing with tragedy is part of telling the story.
“Each time I’ve had to talk to someone on the worst day of his or her life, I’ve learned a little bit more about the sensitivity and tact needed to cover tragedies. I think you have to approach people with compassion first and foremost, and it has to be genuine — people can see the difference.”
STUDENT
Finding His Path JOHNATHAN ALLEN developed an interest in marketing at UCF, but it was a cross-country adventure for PBS reality series “Roadtrip Nation” that reinforced the decision to make it his major. For five weeks between his sophomore and junior years, Allen drove from Los Angeles to New York in an RV interviewing first-generation college graduates, including CEOs, musician John Legend and the U.S. Secretary of Education. The “lifechanging experience” convinced the College of Business Administration senior to trust and follow his instincts — and know that UCF was the right place to do it.
“No one has a map for how his or her life should be planned out. UCF is a place where I can try new things — a place where I can really be me.”
LIVE THE
KNIGHT LIFE Earning your college degree will be the ultimate goal during your time at UCF. But college life is about more than studying and tests. You can lose your voice cheering for the Knights football team at Bright House Networks Stadium in the fall, and discover a passion for paddleboarding at Lake Claire in the spring. And during the next four years you may laugh or cry, be bored or busy, succeed or fail, but you’ll always be among friends with 250,000 alumni who share similar experiences.

Knights are champions on and off the field. We’ve earned landmark victories on state and national stages — from conference titles to FBS bowl wins. But every touchdown, 3-point shot, home run, goal and award our student-athletes achieve scores points for the reputation of UCF Athletics. Beyond the scoreboards, some of our biggest triumphs have been in the classroom. UCF student-athletes have earned an average GPA of 3.0 or better for 15 consecutive semesters. And our Graduation Success Rate consistently ranks among the best in the nation. This year, the Knights return to competition in the American Athletic Conference as reigning champions in football, women’s soccer, softball, women’s golf, volleyball and rowing. With new facilities, year-round action and 16 sports to choose from, rooting for the black and gold has never been more exciting.
