AT THE CU COLLEGE OF NURSING

T

he University of Colorado College of Nursing has a legacy of excellence for preparing professional nurses since 1898, a span of 120 years of shaping the future of health care in Colorado, the western region and across the country. Our mission is to generate leaders in clinical practice, research and community service, promoting the discovery and translation of new knowledge to improve health. Our faculty and staff are dedicated to developing our undergraduate students, experienced nurses electing to further their practice by specialty master’s degrees, doctor of nursing practice programs, and advancing research by educating PhD graduate nurse scholars. We are fortunate that alumni and friends like you are committed to continuing the legacy of excellence in nursing with their philanthropic support. The College of Nursing could not advance to meet the challenges in future health care needs without your generous gifts supporting student scholarships, expansion of educational targeted programs, and general fund awards. Our deepest gratitude for your generous support, which sustains our vision for educating compassionate, caring professional nurses. Mary Krugman, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN Interim Dean, CU College of Nursing

Fueled by Philanthropy Philanthropy is critical to our success, and your support has fueled numerous accomplishments: • Over 31 named scholarships have helped us attract and retain the best and brightest students. 40% of the current class is composed of students from backgrounds underrepresented in nursing. • We continue to partner with community colleges to bring in highly skilled students with deep connections to our community. More than half of the traditional bachelors of science in nursing students come through the community college pathway, a program that encourages community college graduates to pursue a CU nursing education. • Demonstrating our commitment to graduate education, we’ve grown our PhD program and increased applicants by 30%. • We now offer an additional doctor of nursing practice track in health care leadership, bringing our total number of tracks to four. These tracks expand opportunities for our outstanding students. • Our presence in the metro area is expanding, with a total of 96 students attending classes at CU South Denver.

You’ve Made This Possible Over the past several years, we’ve made remarkable progress in nursing research and education at the CU Anschutz Medical Campus and expanded our reach throughout the Denver metro area. Philanthropy is supporting some of our highest performing students who participate in the BS Honors Program. An average of 5 students each year elect to take an additional six credits over the course of two years. This program is developing the next generation of nursing scholars and leaders in the field. We are also increasing our footprint in mental health. This growing national health issue requires efforts from all areas of health care. For our part, we launched a three-year project to better address mental health and opioid addiction in regular hospital and outpatient settings. This educational program helps train our students to identify mental health and addiction in patients and appropriately address these issues in outpatient settings. As we continue making community connections, our nursemanaged clinics have experienced incredible growth in the past two years. In 2016, the CU College of Nursing opened the Campus Health Center and the CU Healthcare Partners at Belleview Point. In 2017, the Center for Midwifery expanded its practice in communities in northern Colorado.

“Philanthropy allows me to nurture my innovative community partnerships, especially with those agencies serving

vulnerable individuals and families. It provides funds to do research and evaluation of best practices to improve their lives as well as their physical and mental health.” - Scott Harpin, PhD, MPH, RN, FSAHM

Our philanthropic partnerships help underserved communities access critical health care programs. Dr. Harpin is working closely with homeless populations and is looking forward to developing deeper connections with community

partners serving these populations. He is also focused on getting students into the community for hands-on learning and research opportunities.

“I am so grateful to have received scholarship support to help with my studies. Even though I work full time, it is still financially difficult to cover the additional cost of a CU education.” – Rachel Griffin, College of Nursing Student

Rachel is currently a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and pursuing a dual degree in the Colorado School of Public Health and the College of Nursing. She is excited about

understanding mental health as a public health issue.
