AT THE CU SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

A

t the CU School of Medicine, we offer excellent educational programs, conduct innovative health sciences research and provide the best possible patient care in our community. As an academic medical center, our mission distinguishes us from other providers in Colorado because we are responsible for training the next generation of health care professionals, improving the quality of life and health of individuals and our community, and expanding treatment and care through scientific advances. As we achieve those goals, we have also elevated our school through the recruitment of worldclass faculty and top students, and investment in programs that build on our momentum. Thank you for providing critical resources to transform medicine. Your support has helped us expand scholarship opportunities, recruit faculty leaders, advance discovery in the laboratories and develop promising therapies. Your support assists in attracting a range of talent from leading basic scientists in immunology and microbiology, to top clinical providers for physical medicine and rehabilitation, and includes those who translate care and research into a standard of care in disciplines like psychiatry and many others. We also depend on your support to create a scholarly environment that nurtures accomplishment, bringing distinguished lecturers from across the country to campus to share their knowledge. Thank you for your valuable contribution to these efforts. -John J. Reilly, Jr., MD Dean, CU School of Medicine Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs Richard D. Krugman Endowed Chair

Fueled by Philanthropy Philanthropy is central to our success as a school and helps us remain a leader in medical education. Your gifts have helped us accomplish many things: • Ensured the long-term stability of the Colorado Rural Health Scholars Program: This program encourages students to pursue medical careers in rural communities. Students in this program divide their time between instruction, group project work, laboratories, hospital volunteer positions and time with mentors. • Recruited top talent to CU Anschutz: Philanthropy contributed vital support to recruit several leaders to the School of Medicine faculty. National searches for leaders open new vistas in education, research and clinical care. • Expanded knowledge through the Dean’s Distinguished Lecture Series: This lecture series is a premier program on campus which brings world-renowned medical experts to share knowledge and collaborate with our faculty. During the past year, we hosted eight lectures on campus.

You’ve Made This Possible With your support, our faculty provide the best clinical care available today while always focusing on improving the quality of medicine to be provided tomorrow. We remain committed to attracting and retaining top talent to continue strengthening our campus and changing lives. Our faculty are the most important resource in solving complex issues in health and medicine. In a collaborative academic setting, our school leads the country in developing solutions to some of the most pressing medical issues of our time. On our campus, our faculty see patients at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital and Children’s Hospital Colorado. In our community, our faculty also partner with other teaching hospitals to inspire and foster the next generation of leaders in medicine. The students in our classrooms will soon become trusted physicians at patient bedsides and leading minds in laboratories. Your support for these incredible individuals fuels our progress today and will enhance medicine for generations.

“I am so grateful for our philanthropic community. You are helping us enhance the lives of so many people throughout the region by supporting our research initiatives as they become viable patient therapy options.” – Venu Akuthota, MD Chair, CU Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Director, Spine Center at University of Colorado Hospital

Dr. Akuthota is one example of the top talent we seek to retain and recruit. He joined the CU Anschutz Medical Campus to lead the Spine Center at University of Colorado Hospital, which he has built into a clinical center of excellence that serves patients from throughout the region and is regarded as a national model for patient-centered care. Dr. Akuthota was appointed chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in January, and he is charting the course toward continued growth and success.

“You have made a huge difference in my education. I’ll pay it forward when I get the chance!” – Allison Rippy CU Rural Track Student

Allison Rippy is a third-year student in the CU School of Medicine Rural Track. As a scholarship recipient, she can focus on her education, rather than worrying about the financial burden of medical school. Once she graduates, Allison plans to pursue a residency in either internal medicine or OB/GYN. She intends to practice medicine in Colorado.
