AT THE CU SKAGGS SCHOOL OF PHARMACY AND PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES
F
or more than 100 years, the CU Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences has educated generations of pharmacists and researchers, while developing the breakthrough therapies of tomorrow. Our faculty and students are working to better understand disease, harness the power of novel treatments, and enhance the patient experience. Faculty are passing on this passion and knowledge to our students, who are eager to help shape the future of pharmacy and research. Gifts like yours help us expand educational opportunities for our students, fuel innovative research, and broaden services we provide to the community. Your support ensures CU Pharmacy’s success— and for that, I am truly grateful. -Ralph J. Altiere, PhD Dean, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
Fueled by Philanthropy Philanthropy is critical to our success, and your support has fueled numerous accomplishments: • U.S. News & World Report ranks us #22 among all accredited pharmacy schools in the country. • We are ranked #6 for National Institutes of Health research funding among all pharmacy schools in the U.S. • For three consecutive years, our students have captured 1st and 2nd place in the American Society of Health System Pharmacists Clinical Skills Competition. • We are recipients of the AACP Lawrence C. Weaver Transformative Community Service Award for our commitment to the community through the development of programs that go above and beyond the traditional role of academic pharmacy. • The Colorado Consortium for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention was established at the school to reduce the scourge of the opioid epidemic. In three years, the Colorado Consortium has made a significant impact in the fight against prescription drug abuse. • Skaggs School of Pharmacy faculty have been instrumental in passing laws in Colorado to help obtain reimbursement for pharmacist services that enable pharmacists to prescribe for limited conditions. • Our scientists have developed a technique that estimates an HIV-negative patient’s adherence to drugs prescribed to prevent HIV transmission; created technology to measure antiviral pharmacokinetics and adherence in an at-risk population; discovered a biomarker to detect and treat epilepsy; and invented a device to save millions of Americans on dialysis from taking phosphate-binding drugs. • Our faculty have provided over $2.5 million in cost savings to Colorado by evaluating cost safety and efficacy of the state’s Medicaid program.
You’ve Made This Possible Over the past decade, the Skaggs School of Pharmacy has made remarkable progress. In the process, we continue to attract and retain outstanding students and faculty members. Thanks to gifts from alumni and friends, the school has been able to significantly increase the total amount of scholarship dollars awarded to our deserving students. For countless learners, private scholarship support eases the burden of covering a costly education and allows students to reach their full potential. Your contributions also assist researchers who are developing treatments that will ultimately save lives. Our faculty’s research efforts inform and enrich the education offered to our students, while providing them with expanded avenues for collaboration. Gifts directed to the school’s student development fund help students currently enrolled in the traditional PharmD program offset the costs of registration fees and travel to national meetings, health care conferences and training workshops, which are important to their professional development. Your generous support makes these opportunities, and many others like them, possible. Thank you for changing lives and making a difference for our most treasured resource— our students.

“I look forward to making an impact on patients’ lives. That is what drives many of us to pursue careers in health care — we want to make a difference in someone’s quality of life, no matter how small it is.”

“The JP Opioid Interaction Awareness Alliance is proud to support the CU Skaggs School of Pharmacy and the education of future pharmacists by offering a scholarship to an aspiring pharmacy student. We elected to partner with the University of Colorado because our late son, James Patrick (JP), for whom our organization is named, was a graduate of CU. He died from a drug interaction. We recognize that pharmacists are often the last voice between the medication and the patient, and that they play a critical role in helping patients use their drugs safely. We felt this scholarship was a fitting way to honor our son and help prevent drug-interaction deaths.” – Don and Karen Hill Co-founders, JP Opioid Interaction Awareness Alliance
