HEALTH AND WELLBEING We are the biggest provider of health professionals in Cumbria and North Lancashire and are in the top three universities for educating Health Professionals in the North West*. With an expert team of lecturers committed to providing you with the best grounding for your career, we offer courses in a range of subject areas. We take particular pride in our partnership arrangements with our NHS, private and voluntary sector providers to support all of our students. We have a visible presence in the form of our link tutors in all of our practice areas. In addition, our placements are supported by committed mentors in practice and the active engagement of practice placement facilitators, to make sure that your placement learning is as seamless as possible. We have excellent facilities to support our health courses, including £2 million new digital imaging equipment, making us a leader in UK radiography training. If you choose to take one of our courses, you will have some of the best medical imaging equipment in the country at your fingertips. Both of the laboratories at Lancaster and Carlisle have the most up-to-date equipment available with powerful Medical Imaging workstations utilising Adobe Photoshop™, and other bespoke scientific packages such as ‘Somisoft’ (a package written in-house using Matlab™) specifically for image analysis. We also have three ultrasound machines which provide excellent ‘hands on’ opportunities for students on Vascular, Musculoskeletal and General Medicine courses. They include facilities for all scanning modes including 3D and 4D ultrasound imaging. Recently, we acquired new Computed Radiography and Direct Digital Radiography suites at Lancaster and Carlisle with a complete ‘Philips XIRIS’ RIS/PACS (Radiology Information System/Picture Archiving and Communications System) for the storage, retrieval and processing of digitally acquired and stored images. We offer a range of courses dedicated to enhancing wellbeing, including social work and working with children and families. In addition, and in support of the government’s policy on mental health, we offer mental health nursing and counselling courses. Career opportunities and job prospects for our graduates are excellent. This is helped by our partnerships with local NHS trusts and other local, national and international care providers. BSc (Hons) APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY* BSc (Hons) APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY with integrated foundation year* YOUR COURSE The applied nature of this degree programme means that you can focus on how psychology is used in the real world, to inform policy and practice, and more generally work to enhance people’s experiences. Applied psychology includes all the core areas in psychology: developmental, social, biological, cognitive, research methodologies and individual differences. This course will include topics such as understanding how children learn, the motivations for and the treatment of offending behaviour, managing stress in the workplace, the way drug use affects behaviour and a host of other applications. This programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society as conferring eligibility for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) on holders of second-class honours or above. BSc (Hons) RADIOGRAPHY YOUR COURSE This course utilises state-of-the-art imaging equipment and a contemporary curriculum which, in combination, are the envy of many other radiography centres in the UK. We have created clinical skills laboratories which replicate a hospital X-ray department (one of our laboratories is actually situated in a hospital close to the university giving access to a patient-centred environment early in your course) and this set-up is focused towards giving you the edge over other job applicants when you enter the clinical workplace.

BSc (Hons) MIDWIFERY YOUR COURSE This programme is designed to prepare you for the role of midwife as defined in the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC 2009) Standards for Pre-registration Midwifery Education. It enables you to place women at the centre of care — to assess needs, to plan and provide care, and where necessary to refer them to other relevant health professionals. This requires a holistic approach that respects individual needs.

The grounding for safe midwifery practice is a sound knowledge of relevant anatomy, physiology and pathology, together with a deep understanding of the psycho-social context of childbirth. In order to adapt care to the context, a midwife must be an effective investigator, critical user of evidence and an excellent communicator. We aim to enable you to develop the lifelong learning skills needed for this demanding role.

YOUR FUTURE The experience you gain enables you to become a qualified midwife who can contribute positively to midwifery practice. BSc (Hons) NURSING (ADULT) YOUR COURSE Qualifying as an adult nurse gives you the opportunity to work with patients who have a wide range of acute and chronic physical conditions. It involves working in hospitals and community settings, which can be highly technical and fastmoving, or slower and less intensive, but just as demanding. Our adult nursing degree emphasises independent thinking and problem-solving, which will help you to undertake research, and deal with (or lead the management of) change in clinical practice.

YOUR COURSE Nursing children is often challenging, usually fun, and always keeps your feet firmly on the ground. Caring for children of all ages in partnership with their families requires a wide range of skills from compassionate nurses. Throughout this programme you will develop your skills with children and their families leading to registration as a children’s nurse. Our child nursing degree enables you to place the child and their family at the centre of your care; it emphasises independent thinking and problem-solving, which will help you to undertake research, and deal with (or lead the management of) change in clinical practice.

Study includes opportunities to work alongside other professionals in addition to other nursing students. BSc (Hons) NURSING (LEARNING DISABILITY) YOUR COURSE People with learning disabilities often have a wide range of physical and mental health conditions. Learning disability nurses work in partnership with patients and family carers to provide specialist healthcare. Their main aim is to support the wellbeing and social inclusion of people with a learning disability by improving or maintaining their physical and mental health by reducing barriers and supporting the person to pursue a fulfilling life. For example, teaching someone the skills to find work can be significant in helping them to lead a more independent, healthy life where they can relate to others on equal terms.

I was fortunate enough to have placements in memory assessment, acute inpatient mental health, stroke rehabilitation and community mental health, to name a few. The variety of clients, environments, physical and mental illnesses I dealt with throughout my four years as a student was what I enjoyed most about the course.

Successful completion of the course means you are eligible for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council which is mandatory for practice as an occupational therapist within the UK. It also provides eligibility to join the College of Occupational Therapists as a professional member.

BSc (Hons) PHYSIOTHERAPY YOUR COURSE If you want a career in an internationally recognised profession, enjoy learning about the human body and health related subjects and enjoy working with people, this full-time three year course is a fantastic option. Physiotherapists work with a broad range of people, helping them to maximise their potential through movement and exercise, manual therapy, education and advice. They also require in-depth knowledge and understanding of the core areas of practice, and are informed by current research evidence. The ability to examine, diagnose, problem solve, prescribe and undertake physiotherapy treatments is central to the role. Our programme integrates academic study and supervised clinical practice, providing over 1,000 hours of clinical practice in a variety of core practice settings, ensuring that you graduate with a strong clinical profile. BA (Hons) SOCIAL WORK YOUR COURSE Aimed at those with some experience of social work or social care, this three year, full-time course is an intensive but rewarding programme that gives you the chance to become a qualified, registered social worker. Our lecturing team’s experience of working with local employers and service users on a range of qualifying and post-qualifying programmes means we have a wide knowledge of what social work is about.

The course includes an “Experts by Experience” module that enhances your learning of the importance of the service user/social worker relationship. This degree focuses on guiding people to return to or maintain safe involvement in sport and exercise. Built around a blend of theoretical understanding and the development of practical and vocational competencies, the programme is accredited by the British Association of Sport Rehabilitators and Trainers (BASRaT). A range of highly qualified practitioners, including sport rehabilitators, physiotherapists, psychologists and sports scientists will equip you with the range of therapeutic and practical skills required for effective and professional sports rehabilitation. YOUR FUTURE Sport rehabilitators are in high demand in the exercise and fitness industry. A degree in Sport Rehabilitation can lead to eligibility for membership of BASRaT as a graduate sport rehabilitator. This can give rise to employment in the NHS, GP referral programmes, the Ministry of Defence, professional sport clubs, teams and individual performers, private sports injury clinics or in consultancy.

With the proportion of older people predicted to grow substantially in future years, this programme will meet the needs of employers for graduates with specific knowledge and skills in working with older adults in both current and emerging enterprises. The overarching philosophy of this programme is that students will develop skills, knowledge and values to work in partnership with older adults, rather than just focusing on ageing in terms of illness and loss. This is a three year part-time course accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) as professional training in counselling. The course has a personcentred core, however it also includes learning about other therapeutic approaches and contemporary developments within the broader spectrum of person-centred/humanistic models. We hold the belief that the person-centred approach has, at its heart, the meeting of human beings, and we work to ensure that the course experience is congruent with this philosophy of facilitating the unique potential of individuals through respectful, open and collaborative relationships.
