INSTITUTE OF THE ARTS Close to the city centre of Carlisle, in a beautiful, leafy setting, the University of Cumbria Institute of the Arts is everything you need to inspire your creativity. Our highly practical courses are at least two thirds focused on the development of your practical skills and you will work on up-to-date equipment and software in dedicated facilities to prepare you for your chosen career. The atmosphere is friendly and our lively environment will stimulate and develop your ideas in the studios, theatres, workshops and labs. We prioritise the development of your professional skills – essential for your future success - and for this reason, we bring the industry to you! Throughout your course, you will meet and work with visiting practitioners including; artists, choreographers, designers, directors, film-makers, musical directors and writers. Our courses feature a common core of ‘Working in the Creative Economy’ including work placement opportunities and our students’ fantastic work is on show to the public throughout the year, online and in our galleries and theatres. Where appropriate, we take work on tour and many of our courses culminate in showing work on national platforms such as New Designers, the Royal Television Society awards or the Edinburgh Festival. Our performance courses offer the chance to take part in a London Showcase for agents and casting directors. We aim to provide you with a rich, personal and unique experience and we have a proven record of excellence in learning, teaching, student support and graduate employment. From the outset, you will be encouraged to find your own artistic direction and voice as an artist with the dedicated support of our artist-lecturers, skilled technicians and visiting artists. Throughout the course, focus will be on the development of your skills across all Fine Art disciplines including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography and digital media/filmmaking. On your Graphic Design course you will explore the relationship between designer, client and audience, working in our inspiring studio space at Brampton Road. You will be given innovative project briefs and will complete up to ten studio projects per semester. Through visits from professional designers, you will also have the opportunity to attend technical workshops, studio lectures and practical demonstrations supplying you with a wealth of knowledge directly from the design industry. Staff will work closely with you in small groups to build your confidence in a range of graphic design mediums including drawing, typography, 2D moving image, illustration, web design and more. You will build your own portfolio throughout your course with the opportunity to display pieces of your work at internal and external exhibitions. We offer a course where we are interested in you as an individual. We know that small year groups are best, so we recruit around forty students each year. This means that you see us regularly and receive a massive amount of regular tutor support and feedback. We also believe that you should work in well-equipped studios and printing labs. We pride ourselves on industry standard kit and facilities. You can borrow kit for free and don’t have to join a waiting list to use the studios. All years of our course happily mix, share ideas and inspire one another. We like you to be able to say things with your work, to be independent, to freely experiment and to have a desire for innovative practice on location or within studio-based practice. This is a practical, triple discipline-plus course. You will study singing and musical theatre, acting, dance, theatre, design and stagecraft. It offers an exciting and dynamic integrated approach that challenges students in an enjoyable, encouraging and supportive environment. You will receive training in core skills and the opportunity to specialise in areas that interest you. You will also work with professional directors, choreographers and musical directors. The FdA Art of Games Design is all about the artwork that needs to be created related to video games, including the initial designs, concepts and concept art, production (both 2D and 3D) and implementation of all of the visual elements required on screen when you play a video game. Taught by industry professionals, you will learn how to design and develop games and their content from concept to final animation. The course will enable you to develop your skills across a wide range of disciplines including texturing, concept art, drawing, 3D modelling and animation. The projects that you work on will provide you with the opportunity to work to real industry requirements and deadlines as well as putting your skills and creativity into practice.

YOUR COURSE This is no ordinary English Literature degree. Our innovative and contemporary course is designed to offer all the relevant skills you would expect, with the addition of a range of compulsory activities to help you stand out from the crowd. In addition to the usual essays and dissertation, you will also produce a mock radio programme, design a web page and learn tips on applying for jobs or future study. You will study a wide variety of literature from the 16th – 21st centuries, and will be encouraged to think about the wider cultural, media, historical, and geographical contexts in which literature is produced. Due to our close proximity to the Lake District, you will have the chance to enrich your studies by visiting the places which inspired some of Britain’s greatest writers such as Wordsworth and Ruskin. We explore a range of genrewriting including science fiction, crime, fantasy and ghost stories. There is opportunity for you to try out your writing in performance if you are interested in the up-and-coming spoken word scene. A big part of the programme is about developing your writing in a ‘real world’ context and you will work on projects such as writing for magazines, fanzines, blogs and websites. We encourage our students to seek publication of their work and a final year module on Publication and Performance will help you to develop your skills in this area. We also host an annual careers day featuring guest speakers from a selection of industries including journalism, PR, publishing, education and more.
