SCIENCE, CONSERVATION, FORESTRY AND OUTDOOR STUDIES Based across our Carlisle and Ambleside campuses, our science, conservation, forestry and outdoor courses benefit from substantial STEM teaching investment and Cumbria’s stunning local natural environment. A new £1.2m high-spec laboratory based at our campus on Fusehill Street, Carlisle is central to the teaching of our new STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) including Marine and Freshwater Conservation and Zoology. Laboratories at our Ambleside campus allow our outdoor students to develop their taxonomic and analytical capabilities, whilst benefiting from the exceptional Lake District location on the doorstep. So if you are seeking an exhilarating career path in science or outdoor pursuits, we are confident Cumbria should be your first choice. The National School of Forestry has been based in Ambleside since 2014. As a student on one of our forestry courses you will be based within a 50-mile radius of hectares of ancient semi-natural woodlands and commercial plantation forests that are managed for a variety of reasons, giving you direct access to a range of habitats and forest management types. The Lake District National Park, with its variations in climate, topography, land use and vegetation, is an ideal place to study forest management and woodland ecology and conservation. If you are interested in conservation, we have numerous Sites of Special Scientific Interest and habitats locally, ranging from the high Cumbrian fells to ancient woodlands. Cumbria’s natural habitats support 25% of all species in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan and 80% of our coastline is classified as being of international wildlife importance. Practical use of these resources in our teaching and the opportunity to study or work abroad make our courses a fantastic choice. You will learn actively, often on location, undertaking real-world assignments that build skills that employers want. Our graduates work with the Forestry Commission, the Woodland Trust, private estates, local authorities and consultancy companies. Some become conservation officers, project scientists, education officers, ecological consultants and County Council ecologists. Others have gone on to work with the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, Chester Zoo, Wildlife Trust, Save Our Squirrels and Eden Rivers Trust.

Some circumstances, such as staff changes, resource limitations and other factors over which the university has no control, such as industrial action or a change in the law or the level of demand for a particular programme or module (please note that this list is non-exhaustive), may result in the university having to withdraw or change aspects of the programmes, modules and/ or student services detailed in the Course Guide. This could include, but not necessarily be limited to, programme/module content, staffing, the location where the programme/module is taught or the manner of teaching delivery, and the facilities provided to deliver or support the programme. Where circumstances demand an unavoidable change or where it is necessary for the university to discontinue a programme of study, the university will take all reasonable steps to minimise the effect and all proposed changes will be notified to potential applicants who have registered an interest
in the relevant programme at the earliest possible opportunity as well as being reflected on the university’s website www.cumbria.ac.uk.
