WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CUMBRIA On behalf of everyone at the University of Cumbria, may I offer you a very warm welcome. September represents the next exciting chapter of your educational journey and we are absolutely delighted you have chosen the University of Cumbria to progress your journey further. I am also new to the university, and like you, I am really excited about the future and working with staff across the university to provide you with a high-quality experience and continued future success. We will be celebrating our tenth anniversary in 2017, and this landmark provides us with an opportunity to showcase our many achievements as well as the exciting opportunities and ambitions we have for our future. Our university is founded on the experience and tradition of over 150 years of higher education, building on our high-profile legacy institutions. With sites across Cumbria, north Lancashire and London, we are now the university of choice for more than 10,000 students and our reputation continues to grow. Each of our campuses has its own sense of community, where staff and students really know each other, and feel safe and comfortable. We are hugely proud of our heritage, background and role, and we are equally proud of the progress we have made over the last few years. We have a unique offer of academic excellence and practical experience. Our staff are passionate about their subjects, often remaining practitioners in their field of expertise - bringing real life and up-to-date practice into the classroom and using their connections to provide industry-based and linked opportunities. Investment continues to support our academic provision. In Carlisle, £3.7million is being invested in laboratories at our Fusehill Street campus, allowing an expansion of our science programmes to meet continued employer demand for well-equipped science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) graduates. Alongside this, to support the needs of the creative sector, a significant contributor to UK economic growth and prosperity, we opened our new Vallum Gallery at Brampton Road last year. Not only providing a dedicated display space for internal and external exhibitions, but importantly, marking the creation of the University of Cumbria Institute of the Arts. Elsewhere, an extensive, £20million programme to enhance the learning and living experience of our students has begun. In Lancaster, we have improved student accommodation, created a simulated learning ambulance and new skills labs, and secured planning permission for a new teaching block. In Ambleside we’ve invested around £7.4million on the redevelopment of the campus environment and facilities as well as an additional £4.5million on new high-quality student accommodation. We are committed to working with you to ensure you get the very best out of your programme and university environment, to provide experiences and outcomes of value during your time with us, on graduation, and throughout your life and career. Over the coming months and years you will not only become a significant part of the University of Cumbria, you will be part of our growing legacy our impact and achievements. We hope you enjoy the rest of your summer, and look forward with enthusiasm and excitement to you joining us. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are here for you. With Best Wishes

“
The best part about my course was being able to research an area that I was particularly interested in and then being supported by the University to make an improvement to the curriculum as a result (introducing Suicide Prevention training for all fields of nursing).
“
“
The experience gained from my placement was invaluable. It’s not just about adding something to your CV. The whole experience is life-changing.

This will create a purpose-built learning environment which will act as a central hub for all academic and research activities and student support services. As part of this investment, a new multimillion pound, environmentally sustainable teaching block will be completed for the start of the 2017 academic year. This new modern teaching facility will have a “Silver” SKA rating and incorporate a 220-seat lecture theatre, social learning spaces and 2500m2 of high-quality teaching accommodation.

Development of STEM courses Phase 2 Scien ce Completing Se Lab Extension ptember 2016
Our ambition is to become the lead provider of STEM courses in the region. We are investing over £3.5 million in state-of-the-art science teaching and research laboratories at our Fusehill Street campus in Carlisle. The second phase of development is already underway. This will enhance the existing facilities providing even more high-quality space for learning, research and consultancy. We intend to create a true centre of excellence for collaboration and science education in Carlisle and the region. With the current demand for STEM graduates (43 per cent of vacancies in STEM roles are reported as being hard to fill due to a shortage of applicants with the required skills) and the planned inward investment into the region of over £25 billion towards the development of nuclear power, there’s never been a better time to consider a career in this sector!
