ROUTES INTO TEACHING

In 2012 Ofsted recognised the passion which our trainees have for their chosen profession and the increasingly sharp way in which they reflect on the quality of their own learning and its impact on how well their pupils learn.

The commitment of schools to the partnership has resulted in trainees gaining a wide range of experience in schools, which has prepared them successfully for employment in very small rural or large schools.

6

We have a national reputation, for innovation in inital teacher education.

8

A number of schools in Cumbria and Lancashire have a teaching staff entirely made up of people who trained at the University of Cumbria.

9

We have developed our MA so it can be studied from anywhere in the world as it can all be done online.

PROUD HERITAGE Formed in 2007, we are proud of our heritage of providing teacher education and feel it’s important that our students understand where we’ve come from. One of the institutions that formed the University of Cumbria was St Martin’s College which was founded in Lancaster by the Church of England to train teachers. It opened in 1964 with 89 students. The College’s gradual growth accelerated rapidly in 1996 when it acquired Charlotte Mason College and again in 1998 when a new campus was opened in Carlisle. Collaboration with Tower Hamlets and other London boroughs facilitated the establishment of a site in East London with a mission to provide teacher training opportunities for local communities.

PLACEMENTS The Faculty of Education has partnerships with over 1000 early years and primary schools and over 250 secondary schools and other 11-19 institutions. This partnership supports the faculty’s early-years, primary and secondary initial teacher education programmes as well as its foundation and masters degree programmes and its professional development, research and enterprise initiatives. Depending on the programme, students can find themselves studying in partner schools and institutions in the north west England, London or in another part of England where relevant distant placement arrangements allow it. Students can organise placements abroad with university support, and we have agreements in place with a number of institutions in European countries and in the USA.

“ The partnership between Wreay School and the University of Cumbria has enabled all staff to develop their coaching skills and professional practice. This has enhanced the teaching and learning at school which supported our ‘Outstanding ‘judgement in our most recent Ofsted inspection.” Claire Render Headteacher Wreay School

CUMBRIA TEACHER University of Cumbria trained teachers can be found teaching throughout the UK and in many countries overseas. Many University of Cumbria Teachers return to study with us through our online MA in Education. As they gain experience many Cumbria Teachers become mentors to our student teachers during placements. When Cumbria Teachers take up roles as CPD coordinators or become head teachers they work with the Faculty of Education on professional development, school improvement and action research projects.

S CH OO L D I R EC T School Direct is a new government initiative whereby graduates can train as teachers spending their entire course in a school with the prospect of a job at the end of their training. Schools offering School Direct will work closely with their university partner to deliver a high-quality teacher education. Graduates selected for School Direct will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) leading to qualified teacher status on successful completion of their School Direct training. We are working with 18 school partnerships nationwide and are providing over 300 School Direct places in both primary and secondary schools. Partnerships bring together practitioner and academic expertise to create critically reflective professionals who will be the next generation of outstanding teachers. The success of our PGCE is underpinned by both an academic teaching philosophy and skills and practice of real school based learning.
