Holiday Greetings

Happy Holidays Dear Alumni and Friends, With the holiday season approaching, it is natural to take a moment to remember the past year and look forward to what is to come. As Dean of the School of Dentistry, I reflect on our commitment to graduating dental professionals who clearly understand the human condition and what it means to care for the entire person. Every dental school graduates clinicians, but the Detroit Mercy Dental humanistic approach to patient care distinguishes who we are.

TIP OF THE LEADING EDGE DECEMBER 2021

At Detroit Mercy Dental, we model the belief that we have a duty to protect, advocate and serve as a steward of those who are marginalized and cannot advocate for themselves. To that end, our partnerships with community organizations such as the Malta Clinic give Detroit Mercy Dental students unique opportunities to serve. With funding from the Michigan Dental Association Foundation, the School of Dentistry and the Malta Clinic have announced a new service program: Street Dent. This program will improve the dental health of homeless individuals in the Detroit area by providing dental services. This experience will give student volunteers unique leadership opportunities as they develop the skills, knowledge and cultural competence needed to care for those with unique oral health circumstances and conditions. These skills, which cannot be taught in the classroom, are rooted in Jesuit and Mercy traditions and will play an invaluable role in preparing our graduates to become socially and ethically sensitive dental professionals. Over the years, we have heard about many of our alumni and friends who take great pride in serving the underserved, and we are grateful for the impact you have made in the profession and in the lives of those you have touched. I always enjoy hearing your stories and encourage you to continue to share with us how treating those who are marginalized has changed the way you see the person in others. Our students and your alma mater will not only benefit from hearing about your experiences, but will also take honor in knowing the Detroit Mercy approach to caring for others is strong. We hope you enjoy the first edition of the Tip of the Leading Edge newsletter and wish you many blessings this holiday season. I am thankful for your part in the profession and am grateful to serve as your Dean. Remain healthy and enjoy the pause and reflection the holidays afford us. Sincerely,

Mert N. Aksu, D.D.S., J.D., MHSA, Cert. D.P.H. Dean and Professor
