STUDYING AT THE LAW SCHOOL Approach to teaching
Employer links
Our highly flexible postgraduate programme has been specifically designed to respond to the needs of law firms, barristers’ chambers, and other employers for subject specialists.
You will benefit from our excellent links with members of the legal profession, including our alumni, many of whom occupy senior positions in the UK and overseas. They play an active role in the life of the School whether offering work placements, mentoring, taking part in networking events, supporting pro bono projects, delivering lectures or judging mooting competitions.
We will encourage you to take a fresh perspective, to think independently and solve problems – the attributes of a good lawyer. Exeter graduates are adaptable, highly independent and work creatively to find solutions – skills required to succeed in all walks of life.
Faculty and research You will be taught by academics who are engaged in original academic research, many of whom have considerable experience in legal practice. Our experts have addressed NATO, the United Nations, Parliamentary Select Committees and the Law Commission; they have advised Government departments in the UK and overseas, and bodies such as OPEC, the European Parliament and the World Bank. Our research influences policy-making in the UK and overseas; changes the way legal professionals practice law; and shapes public attitudes by provoking media debate. Our research specialisms cross international boundaries and our scholars work on a global stage. We are long respected for our research in Family Law, Legal History and European Law and have strengths in International Law and Human Rights, Commercial and Corporate Law, Science, Culture and the Law, and Environmental Law.
Our students gain excellent employment prospects and go on to successful careers around the world. They are employed by a variety of legal companies overseas and international firms such as Hogan Lovells, Norton Rose, Clifford Chance, Slaughter and May, Linklater, Macfarlanes, Ashurst, and Ropes and Gray.

Coming to Exeter for my LLM degree was a deliberate and easy decision. The Law School has an excellent academic reputation in the UK and worldwide and provided several options for specialisation. The programme has given me a truly different perspective on European law and the implications it has with national legal orders as well as with politics. This thorough understanding was helpful for my following legal exam in Germany and still is for the doctorate thesis I am currently working on. Matthias Schopf, Germany LLM European Law

I’m working for one of the Worldwide Fortune 500 companies. I am a Legal Compliance Attorney based in Shanghai and oversee the Ethics and Compliance for the North Asia area. The most valuable skills I learned during my LLM were independent thinking and to be a team player. We had classmates from France, Germany, Jordan, Thailand, China and elsewhere. The seminar discussion was always interesting and everyone got the chance to share their professional knowledge within their individual jurisdictions which opened my eyes. The optional tour usually takes in visits to institutions such as the European Commission, European Investment Bank, Council of Europe, European Court of Human Rights and European Parliament. During the tour, you’ll also get the chance to explore the cities and experience European culture.
The (European) tour was an essential part of the year spent at Exeter. We gained a valuable insight into the work of the EU institutions and, in particular, I really appreciated the discussions with the members of the institutions and fellow students. Furthermore, attending a public session at the European Parliament and a court hearing in the European Court of Justice were both extremely impressive. Sandy Gebauer, Germany LLM European Law
I applied to do the placement at 3 Paper Buildings offered by Exeter alumnus Mark Sutherland Williams to see what it is like to work in a well-known and established chamber in London. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and was delighted to be able to attend a Tax Tribunal, which meant I was able to ask a HMRC Tax solicitor and a policy maker about important aspects of my dissertation.
