Selection, interviewing and unconscious bias

Induction for people managers

Developing your team

About this course: As a manager, you are the vital link between your most valuable resource – people – and the University’s goals and objectives. How you help your staff to develop and use their learning will affect how successful you and the organisation are in achieving your goals. With your own day-to-day tasks and challenges, it is easy for staff development to slip to the bottom of the list. However, if your staff are continually learning and developing you will reap the rewards with a team that gains confidence, performs better, and is more engaged in what is happening in the team and the organisation.

There is some really helpful information and guidance on our webpages for managers, supervisors and team leaders. www.exeter.ac.uk/ staff/employment/managers

Who is it for? Anyone in professional services who manages other people and would like to deploy these skills with their staff. In addition to this course for managers, we run a ‘Taking control of your career’ course for professional services staff who are not in a managing/supervisory role, see page 28. Making conversations count: managing performance About this course: Some of the conversations we have at work can be more difficult than others. They might cover sensitive or emotional topics, like addressing under-performance or dealing with behavioural issues. Motivating people to achieve their full potential and supporting those who want to progress but are unsure how, can also be challenging. These sorts of conversations require planning, sensitivity and clarity in order to achieve the best possible outcome for everyone. This course will help give confidence in delivering difficult messages, as well as setting the direction of critical conversations. Please note that this course will not cover any University procedures as these are covered in the previous course.

Influencing skills and strategies

Coaching conversations for managers

About this course: In today’s complex Higher Education world, managers and leaders must influence and persuade others by creating successful and effective working relationships. Whatever your role and the context you work within, influencing is critical to your impact, reputation and success. You cannot be an effective leader or manager if you cannot relate to and influence others and generate enthusiasm and motivation.

About this course: “Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime” – Author unknown.

Who is it for? This course is designed for both professional services and academic staff. Course details: 1 day, external trainer. Book your place – www.exeter.ac.uk/staff/development Feedback from past participants:

“The presenter was extremely good…with examples relating to the workplace.”

It is now no longer enough as a manager to be a talented individual or expert, increasingly in demand are ‘expert individuals’ who are able to develop talent and results from others, but not by increasing the controls on them or by monitoring staff more closely. This course is all about helping others to develop, empowering them to take responsibility and will feature techniques for giving effective, constructive feedback in ‘positive’ as well as ‘difficult’ situations. Who is it for? This course is designed for both professional services and academic staff who lead or manage, those that are new in role or experienced and who would like to deploy these skills with their staff. Building relationships that work: Influencing and assertiveness skills

Train the trainer: Essential skills for the occasional trainer

About this course: Academic staff frequently work with colleagues in other parts of the world or in dispersed research groupings. There may not be a natural hierarchy within the group and if there is one, they may prefer a more collegiate culture anyway. Professional services staff are increasingly likely nowadays to work in teams with flat structures and the Professional Services Transformation has adopted a matrix working structure. In these new, fluid and more dispersed working environments, we cannot achieve what we want without the help of others and it can be tricky. We need to use our personal influence to get others to work with us constructively.

About this course: If you do not deliver training on a regular basis, yet need to train or brief colleagues or students once in a while, this course will help you think through what is important and structure the event for maximum impact. Planning and preparation are key. The ability to present your material effectively is critical too, but the application of a few simple tools and techniques can help ensure this happens.

Who is it for? This course is designed for academic and professional services staff.
