STUDY ABROAD COLLEGE OF HUMANITIES
WHERE WILL A HUMANITIES DEGREE AT EXETER TAKE YOU?
Studying abroad at the University of New Mexico greatly diversified my student experience. I really enjoyed the courses I took; it was fantastic to study the history of the American West whilst living and breathing in the very locations where these events had taken place. I also became a part of a large body of international students within the community at the university, and my closest friends represented fourteen countries on five continents. Through them I learnt as much about other cultures as I did about the USA. Hugo Corbett, BA History (Cornwall) Study Abroad Destination: USA
WHAT IS STUDY ABROAD? Study Abroad is the opportunity to study at one of our partner universities around the world and, depending on your subject area, may also include the opportunity to work abroad. Students from the College of Humanities are currently able to study abroad at over 90 different universities, in more than 20 countries across five continents. All students from the College of Humanities at both our Penryn and Streatham Campuses can choose to study abroad as part of their degree. The year abroad takes place in Year 3, adding an additional year to your degree programme. Students from some of our disciplines are able to study abroad for just one term.
Study placements are available at both European and international universities and if you’re not studying Modern Languages you don’t necessarily need to speak a foreign language as many institutions offer classes taught in English. Of course, there are also opportunities to spend your year abroad in an English-speaking country. The time you spend studying abroad (i.e. three months or more) and the credits you gain at your host university will count towards your University of Exeter degree.
SUPPORT WHILE STUDYING ABROAD • During your time abroad you will be registered at the University of Exeter and as such you can expect to receive support from the University. You will be in regular contact with the Study Abroad Co-ordinator in the College, your personal tutor and your peer group. • You will be supported in your preparations for your time abroad and will attend several meetings which will help you understand what to expect.
• Run by students for students, the Study Abroad Buddy Scheme is an initiative established by Exeter students who have previously participated in Study Abroad. They offer advice and support to students about to embark on their year or semester abroad. Please visit our website for further details.
Fees and finance • There will be no tuition fees to pay to host universities.
• If studying or working for a year abroad you will pay a reduced tuition fee to Exeter. For up-to-date tuition fees for studying and working abroad, please visit www.exeter.ac.uk/undergraduate/money/fees • For funding information, please visit the International Office’s dedicated pages at www.exeter.ac.uk/international/abroad
WHY STUDY ABROAD? More and more students are choosing to gain international experience whilst at university. By studying abroad you will gain crucial transferable skills, such as intercultural competence and awareness, initiative, independence, and improved communications skills, as well as an exciting range of experiences to discuss at future job interviews. Depending on where you spend your year abroad, you may also gain a working knowledge of another language. Studying or working abroad is beneficial academically and can help you develop the skills that are valued by employers. Our students also tell us it is thoroughly enjoyable and a great life experience.
Living abroad for a year shows employers that you’re independent and willing to try new, potentially scary things in order to stretch yourself. It develops your cultural awareness, helps you adapt to new environments, and the opportunities for personal and professional development were just incredible. Lucy Porter, BA Psychology with Italian Study Abroad Destination: Italy
Choosing to study abroad has been the one of the most challenging, invigorating, and life changing decisions I’ve made. The experience of studying as part of a close-knit international student network while simultaneously living immersed in a totally different culture is incomparable. Living for a year in Shanghai has made me more certain of my ability to cope on my own than ever before; my language skills have improved exponentially, and I have a whole new network of friends from every corner of the globe. What more could you ask for!

I chose to study abroad to expand my horizons by embedding myself in another culture. The year gave me the opportunity to make close friends with people from a range of backgrounds reflecting Canada’s multicultural society, broadening my understanding of cultures outside my own. Oliver Picken, BA English with Study Abroad (Exeter) Study Abroad Destination: Canada
