IBM has been involved with the One Planet MBA at Exeter since its early days, as we recognised that the thinking behind the course mapped very well with our Smarter Planet agenda. Today, we are leading conversations on how cognitive technology can help businesses and society find insights, uncover breakthroughs and predict trends to enhance customer experiences, reinvent organisations and transform industries. As Chair of the MBA’s Corporate Advisory Board I have had many dealings with course participants. They not only bring a wealth of experience from their workplace, but also an open-minded curiosity about business performance, management and leadership – informed by the context of innovation and sustainability. I have been uniformly impressed by the calibre of individuals on the programme. They are going to be leaders for the 21st century.”

How we develop our global talent Working in a multinational cohort alongside academic faculty, business leaders and MBA alumni, our participants have access to inspiring conversations, challenging ideas, and innovative thinking. This vibrant learning environment provides the stimulus and support needed to prepare them for the impact that they will make in their future employment. The One Planet MBA places personal transformation at its heart, supporting participants to develop the skills and mind-set needed to lead within an uncertain global environment. The existing knowledge, skills, professional experience and personal attributes of our participants forms the focus of ongoing personal
reflection which results in an enhanced self-awareness. This stronger sense of “self” coupled with new knowledge gained from across their programme equips aspiring leaders with the confidence and tenacity to apply their learning to real world issues. By working with our leading partners on real business challenges, our participants have developed the essential communication, collaboration, and creative-thinking skills needed to bring value to their consultancy projects. Each participant is unique. What they share is a deep sense of purpose in their work, creating positive impact and creating change – for good.

Contributing business innovation with Fairtrade The MBA’s innovative Emerging Business Models module, launched last year, benefited from the active participation of Barclays, Bunzl, Triodos Bank, Accenture, Unilever and Portcullis Legals.
We partnered with the One Planet MBA to contribute innovative solutions for two challenges our organisation is facing. We asked course participants how, in a rapidly evolving field of sustainability initiatives, Fairtrade could make fresh uses of its unique assets and strengths to provide new forms of partnerships with businesses. We were also seeking support in conceptualising innovative approaches to value chains and trade which made use of developing technologies to bring shoppers closer to farmers. The teams met their briefs very successfully, responding not just to Fairtrade’s core challenges, but also providing a wealth of great ideas that we can now develop further. We were provided with a holistic perspective that we could not have found internally, and this has been an invaluable outcome. The reports have proved extremely useful and we are now in the process of exploring in detail many of the solutions that the teams contributed as a result of our involvement.” DANIEL MOREY, INNOVATION MANAGER, FAIRTRADE FOUNDATION

Pioneering data analytics in the MBA curriculum Our corporate partners work alongside MBA Faculty to bring their own knowledge and experience to the programme. Pioneering in its approach to management education, the One Planet MBA was one of the very first MBA programmes in the world to embed formal training in design thinking, “big data” and analytics in advanced management education. This was made possible through our partnership with SAP who saw in the One Planet MBA the opportunity to make an impact and contribute their expertise to a ground breaking MBA curriculum.
SAP believes strongly in supporting and learning from those academic institutions and students around the world, who want to be at the forefront of leveraging analytics capabilities within a range of contexts. SAP is partnering with the Untied Nation, to support the 2015-30 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and through our partnership with the One Planet MBA, we are enabling course participants to practice their analytical skills within the context of those goals. This is an exciting and challenging place to be involved.”

Adding value through corporate engagement One Planet MBA 2014 participant Diane Hayman carried out her consultancy project with corporate partner Thomson Reuters assessing how social technologies could be used to streamline communications and increase employee engagement in a digital workplace.
For me, the value of studying for an MBA with an emphasis on sustainable business practices was that it ensured my business knowledge was not only up-to-date, but also future-proofed. As someone who had taken time out of the workforce to raise a family, this was a huge confidence booster. The international nature of my fellow students was also a fascinating feature of the course. I emerged a more astute and resilient individual, with a global outlook and a similarly global network of friends. I can say with certainty that the year that I spent studying for the MBA has become one of the defining periods of my life. DIANE HAYMAN, ONE PLANET MBA 2014, DIGITAL MARKETER – THE GRO COMPANY

The One Planet MBA Global Talent Book 2017
Experiential learning through real life applications Last year saw the launch of Emerging Business Models, a pioneering four-day module on the One Planet MBA. It is designed to dovetail the innovation and entrepreneurial content delivered in respective modules during the same period. The module brings together a blend of ideas around disruptive technologies and social trends, all viewed through the lens of the business model canvas. Therefore, the purpose of the course is to hone in on where value is created, and how to deliver and capture it. With a focus on new business models, the course enables participants to appreciate the business opportunities arising from the ‘internet of things’, ‘3D printing’, ‘digital manufacturing’ and ‘block chain’ while exploring opportunities brought about by the ‘collaborative economy’ and the business models operated by ‘sharing economy’ start ups and leading players. This is all set against the backdrop of ‘business doing well and good’ and utilising the restorative framework of the circular economy. Fast paced, the module is not only intellectually challenging but also engaging. It relies on the active contribution from progressive organisations such as Triodos Bank, Fairtrade, Accenture and Unilever, some of which set a real world challenge for course participants to address in teams. They were asked to deliver a business model report in collaboration with a client that delivers value.
