Support Exeter to create a greener, healthier and fairer future

Your support makes a difference

Here at Exeter we are committed to making the world a better place. Whether we are tackling climate change, developing cures for disease, or helping ensure that all young people have the chance to pursue their dreams. Our supporters – both donors and volunteers – truly make a difference and it is through their efforts that Exeter remains an internationally acclaimed centre of education and research.

Gifts of both time and money allow us to create new opportunities and provide support to those who need it. Your support can transform the future of talented young people seeking to achieve their goals, it can provide a brighter future for those suffering with chronic disease, and it can help secure the future of the planet and its people. In recent years we have, for example, achieved a ban on the use of plastic microbeads, transformed the treatment of neonatal diabetes,

As a university, we are grateful for all the support we receive at any level. Please read on to discover more about the ways your support can help us to make a difference.

introduced a ‘no-fault’ divorce bill, and helped health services to diagnose cancer earlier.

Additionally, our alumni volunteer community have given their time to provide industry expertise and insight to students via the Career Mentor Scheme, taken part in video profile interviews, virtual events and in-country offerholder events to bolster the University’s international student recruitment strategy.

The impact of our supporters generosity of time and money can be felt across the University and beyond; including the funding of vital research into diseases, making world leading advances in climate change and enhancing the experience of our students. We receive support from over 95 countries across the world which highlights the reach of the work we do and showcases what a fantastic global community we have at Exeter. We are incredibly grateful for each and every supporter. Thank you.” Dr Shaun Curtis, Director, Global Advancement.

Volunteer your time and expertise

At Exeter, we are incredibly fortunate to have a supportive network of alumni who contribute to the University in many ways. Last year, we were thankful for over 14,900 alumni volunteers who collectively dedicated 17,400 hours, showcasing their remarkable passion and commitment to our University.

As an alumni volunteer you could:

l Provide Career Mentoring

l Join our Ask An Alum student support scheme

l Provide a Career Profile

l Give a guest lecture/career talk

l Give mock interview/employability support to students

l Become a country contact if based overseas

l Become an Alumni Ambassador to help us in a variety of ways – such as student recruitment or providing connections to your alumni peers.

l Provide work experience/a placement in your firm, or real life projects for students to work on

l Be considered for membership of strategic boards across the University which align with a number of different themes.

Please email us if you would like further details on how to volunteer: alumni@ exeter.ac.uk

I owe an important personal debt to the University, stretching back more than 50 years. Holding mock interviews with undergraduates is one quite practical way I can try to repay that, with the genuine bonus of being stimulating, fascinating and just plain old fun to do. So, I hope it’s a ‘win-win’, for all concerned; and I also hope to carry on with it, helping to refine its methods and to increase the benefits it provides for students.”

Mike Cooper, English & Drama, 1975, Winner of the Debbie Hill Award 2023 for Exceptional Support of Students.

Make a single or regular gift

We sincerely appreciate single gifts, which can be allocated to support specific projects that align with our donors’ interests. Regular gifts provide a reliable and sustainable income stream that the University can count on. All gifts can be set up quickly and easily online through our fundraising page at donate.exeter.ac.uk and can support one of our key causes:

Student support

Donations from alumni are essential for providing scholarships and bursaries to talented students who might not otherwise afford to attend Exeter. They also help current students facing financial difficulties. Gifts to our Annual Fund improve the student experience by supporting student-led projects and opportunities at Exeter.

Research

Exeter is a global leader in health research, driving breakthroughs in areas like diabetes, dementia, and cancer that have far-reaching impact. Additionally, our environmental research is at the forefront of the climate crisis, with five of the world’s top 21 climate scientists spearheading Exeter’s effort. Your donations play a crucial role in advancing both health and environmental research, enabling our teams to make life-changing discoveries and develop sustainable solutions for a better future.

The Alumni Annual Fund covered our pitch and referee costs and allowed our women’s football team to train twice a week and compete every Sunday, where we eventually won our league! The support from alumni gave our team members a chance to socialise with people from different courses, and to keep fit whilst having fun.” FXSU Ladies Football team.

Our Exeter Leaders Circle – community giving initiative

The University of Exeter’s Leaders Circle is a community of like-minded individuals who generously contribute between £1,000 and £10,000 within an academic year.

As a Leaders Circle donor, you play a vital role in driving impactful change across key areas of the University. Your collective support not only creates meaningful outcomes but also inspires others to join and expand our community.

Together, our goal is to build lasting, community-driven support where it’s needed most, helping Exeter on its journey to becoming a greener, healthier, and fairer university.

Please contact alumni@exeter.ac.uk for more details on how you can join our newest community giving initiative at the University.

It is time to create change together. Individually we can nudge the dial, collectively we can move the clock.”

Davies CBE, FCA (Economics & Statistics, 1976).

Transformational gifts to the University

The University has a proud tradition of philanthropy, with generous gifts playing a pivotal role in our growth and impact. Last year, more than 2,700 friends and supporters came together to contribute a record-breaking £33 million.

These transformational gifts have reshaped our campus with state-ofthe-art facilities for education and research, elevated our research capabilities, and provided scholarships and studentships, empowering countless students to reach their full potential.

Your support has the power to change lives. It can open doors for talented young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, bring hope to those battling chronic disease, and contribute to securing the future of our planet and its people.

Tax efficient giving

In the UK only 51% of donors report that they regularly add Gift Aid to their donation (CAF survey, 2024).

It is always good to remember that Gift Aid allows charities to reclaim 25p for every £1 donated by UK taxpayers, making your donation go even further at no extra cost to you. Additionally, higher and additional rate taxpayers can claim back the difference between higher rate and basic rate tax on the value of their donations in personal tax relief or to increase their donation.

Alternatively, shares and securities can provide a double benefit as donors can set the full value of the gift against the total income tax liability for the year in which the gift is made.

Gifts from overseas can also benefit from tax efficient giving, please scan the QR code for further information. You can also speak to one of our philanthropy team who will be happy to help you decide on the best method of gift for your own circumstances.

Tommy’s story

The construction of the new Al Qasimi facility, will start in 2025, extending from the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies (IAIS) which His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah has funded previously.

I wish to extend my utmost gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Sultan. This extraordinary act of philanthropy is transformational for our students and our staff, and its scale and ambition form the centrepiece of our 2030 Strategy.”

Professor Lisa Roberts, President and Vice-Chancellor.

This scholarship means a lot to me, and I take pride in saying that I am a student at the University of Exeter. The languages department at Exeter is first-class and was one of the main reasons that I wanted to study here.

Coming from a low-income family in a remote area of North Cornwall, where few students transition to university, my scholarship will significantly help me during my time at Exeter. I will be able to spend more time studying, and will be able to cover my day-to-day expenses.

Being selected for a scholarship has given me additional motivation and optimism for my future studies, as I have had first-hand experience that hard work and dedication is rewarded. This scholarship has been truly life changing and I am honoured to have been given the opportunity.”

Tommy (BA Modern Languages, 2026).

I truly believe that Jack would be dead now if it wasn’t for the research at Exeter. Thank you for all you have done at Exeter.... thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Emma Matthews, a mother whose son received pioneering treatment thanks to University of Exeter research.

Gifts to UK registered charities are typically exempt from Inheritance Tax. In the UK, inheritance tax is currently paid to the government at a rate of 40% if your estate is worth more than £325,000. However, the rate might be reduced to 36% if 10% or more of your estate is left to charity. As a registered charity, most gifts left to the University of Exeter are exempt from inheritance tax. It is helpful to check the latest guidance from HMRC.

Sandra Lauder (BA Modern Languages, 1961). fundraising.exeter.ac.uk/

To repay my debt to the University would be impossible, but by making my annual donation and the provision of a legacy in my Will, I hope to ensure that future generations can benefit as I have done.”
