Primary Enrichment Outreach Programme Spring 2019

Years 3-6

Welcome I am delighted to introduce the University of Exeter’s Primary Enrichment Outreach Programme for Spring 2019. This prospectus outlines the exciting and comprehensive range of activities that we offer across Key Stage 2, from Years 3 to 6. Our Outreach Programme was first established in 2007 and in that time we have brought together the knowledge, expertise and experience of our tutors and lecturers to provide high quality teaching and learning experiences. Our programme aims to encourage and develop the progression, attainment and aspiration of school-age pupils and is specifically aimed at engaging pupils who demonstrate a particular interest, skill or potential in a specific subject area. Our hope is that pupils further their passion and understanding for their subject; feel inspired by practical, hands-on learning activities and meet like-minded peers, all within the context of a Higher Education setting. We look forward to welcoming you!

Our Pupils: We welcome Key Stage 2 children from all backgrounds, from state education to home schooling, and in particular those children who demonstrate a particular interest or aptitude for a subject. We are committed to supporting children from disadvantaged or under-represented groups, and are therefore pleased to offer free places to children from low income or Pupil Premium backgrounds. Please contact us to apply for a place.

Pupil safety: All members of the Primary Enrichment Outreach team hold an enhanced DBS certificate. All students participating in events are supervised by a member of our team. All activities held at the University of Exeter undergo a risk assessment before they take place, and we have fully trained first aiders on site.

How to book: Courses are £35 each, with free places available to those from low income or Pupil Premium backgrounds. To book a place please visit our website and follow the link to our online store: www.exeter.ac.uk/socialsciences/education/

Code Breakers

Course description Come and be a Maths Detective for the day. This workshop encourages pupils to use their investigation skills to solve a range of mathematical problems with a focus on code-breaking. We will explore, analyse and break a range of codes from historical to modern day times, and consider contexts for their use. Emphasis will be placed on working collaboratively to share ideas and ‘sift through clues’. Pupils will also be encouraged to analyse what makes a good cypher, and to generate their own codes for others to solve. During the course pupils will:

Problem Solving

Course description This workshop is designed for pupils to engage in a range of problem -solving activities and in particular to develop their algebraic thinking. Pupils will be encouraged to solve specific problems and then explore ‘what if...?’ questions - leading towards generalising. Emphasis will be placed on developing pupils’ mathematical reasoning skills moving from visual to more abstract problems. We will explore a range of problems that will require pupils to be systematic. Peer talk will be a key feature of the session as pupils explain their approaches to problems. The workshop is ideal for pupils who enjoy, and have an analytical approach to problem solving. Part of the session will consider the basics of algebra using letters as unknowns and as variables. The workshop is aimed at pupils who are able to use abstract thinking and who enjoy generating rules and problems for others to solve.

Course description Are you interested in where your food comes from? In sustainability and fairness? Do you like working as part of a team to find answers to “big” questions? Then this course is for you!

Contact us E: enrichment@exeter.ac.uk Tel: 01392 724816

During the morning we will be using infographics and videos to find out about food production around the world. We will think about where our food comes from and how it travels to our tables. During the afternoon, children will work in teams in a "real world" food simulation game, taking on the roles of producers, farmers, wholesalers, retailers and customers. This will provide them with first-hand experience of the challenges of food production and lead to deep thinking about possible solutions. During the day we will use our mathematics skills, teamwork, our powers of persuasion and think about basic economics. This geography and thinking skills course is perfect for children who love to discuss, debate and think about big, real world questions.

Course description For children: Have you ever wondered how things move— or don’t? This course will explore movement, due to forces. We will use this knowledge to test a number of simple vehicles throughout the day from cars to rockets to see if their propulsion is perfect!

For adults: The National Curriculum states that ‘Pupils in years 3 and 4 should be given a range of scientific experiences to enable them to raise their own questions about the world around them.’ This course starts from the National Curriculum, but goes far beyond what is expected for this age group. This course aims to teach children, through hands on experiments, how forces behave and how forces can be utilised to make objects move.
